Fools Rush In: Game 67704
Is this the highest stakes game played? Pot of 7000 D. I notice three players have voted to draw already, how disappointing. This is one game I would like to see played to the death.

Who is your money on?

Cheating in WebDiplomacy
I have sent a message to the game mods about a no ingame messaging World XI game Im in days ago without reply - and I think its a clear case of either A) metagaming or B) Multi-account because the level of co-op without any supposed comms is unbelievable.

So far nothing at all from the mods - not even an acknowledgement of the mail - what should I do?

Indeed. Too many stupid players here and too many stupid people in general. I guess that's because most of you are American.

your 50% defeat ration makes it hard for me to even consider you a real player.
Go back to risk american fool.
lets check Ghost Ratings too.
You are 928th and I'm 84th.
Not bad for someone who doesn't speak English as a first language competing in a site with English speaking players in a game that talking is so important...

stratagos: 2 (me included) and a Cypriot I think. There are also about 5 inactive Greeks too but you can't really count them.

It's bizarre to me how responsible people can blame the Greek crisis on Greece and especially they like to blame Greek workers for daring to be middle class. Greek debt per GDP was about average. What caused the crisis was 1-the global recession, which began in the banking sector of United States; and 2-speculation, which jacked up the cost of borrowing for Greece. If Greece was a larger country, this wouldn't be happening. But it's small so the speculators targeted it. Japan's debt per GDP is much much higher, but you don't see speculators targeting Japan.

And all of this could have been solved had the Germans ever agreed to supporting Eurobonds. But they won't, even though this solution has been proposed over and over again. Greece has benefited little from being in the eurozone, while German exports have shot up enormously. Yet they act like everybody else is a burden on them.

Hellalt started this thread talking about crappy players and it comes out that he plays "not to lose" instead of playing to win.
The definition of a crappy player. LOL!
Try to to get "defeated" in your next game Hellalt.
I'll be playing to win.

Hellalt, how have you played in some many games on this site, and you are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good, yet you only have 406 D after 155 games. That's 2.6 D per game.

At your ace I should have 42 pts, yet I have 339 after only 16 games.

What is the secret to your "lack of success" Hellalt? LOL!

@hellalt: "If manners had played a role in international diplomacy Hitler would have had no allies at all!!! "

I'm confused. This is an argument AGAINST considering manners? I mean, I agree manners aren't that important, but this doesn't seem like the best line of argument. Hitler's allies all got screwed.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Diplomacy requires strategy, tactics, and a snake like tongue. Hellalt often forgets that the job of the Diplomat is to get the other guy to do exactly what you want him to do and leave himself screwed so you get the win. This is not a game of Axis and Allies where you have a side and the side wins. You *want* to solo at everyone else's expense, but the odss are you won't. So you cover the bases and don't offend too many people to where they want you out of the draw, but be agressive enough to get yourself in position to tro for the solo.
stratagos (3269 D(S))

Putin, have you actually done any research into the roots of the Greek debt crisis? The previous government was cooking the books for *years*...

Also, its not 'speculation' to assess the risk of default being high, and hence require higher interest rates to agree to loan Greece money. Or do you plan to invest in Greek debt?
Putin33 (111 D)
06 Oct 11 UTC
You apparently are alone in the world in thinking that hedge funds dealing in credit default swaps in order to get penalty payments from bond holders (and thus increasing the interest rates on bonds) in case Greece defaults is not speculation. What on earth then is speculation? And why do all the Eurozone countries call it speculation? Why are hedge funds engaged in it? What would you call betting on future price movements?

Italy revised their deficit figures more than Greece has, so this notion that it's something uniquely Greek or somehow the cause of the problem is rubbish. Furthermore they did it with the help of US investment banks. Yes, Goldman Sachs seems to have their hands in every damn crisis that goes on.

Stu Varney is the guy who said there aren't any poor people in America because they have refrigerators. Generally a macho rightwing clown who blames the victims for everything.
stratagos (3269 D(S))
06 Oct 11 UTC
Ok, so they're not faking their figures, but if they were it's Goldman's fault?

The Eurozone countries call it speculation for two reasons.

A) it *is* 'speculation', for a specific definition of speculation - they believe that Greek is at a risk of default. There is a difference between covering your ass and deliberately triggering a market collapse in order to get a payday. Or would you like to point out a financial institution that will be *better off* if the Euro goes down the tubes?

B) It's easier to blame others than take responsibility.

You still didn't answer my question: do you believe Greek debt is a good investment?
stratagos (3269 D(S))

Re: Stu Varney - and that has what, exactly, to do with the discussion?
Putin33 (111 D)
06 Oct 11 UTC
I can't think of a financial institution, or rather a hedge fund, who gives a damn about the long term consequences of anything they do. If they did then we wouldn't have had a financial crisis in the first place.

Greek debt wouldn't be any more abnormal than anything else, certainly shouldn't warrant a Triple C credit rating, if it wasn't for speculation. The yields on the bonds are ridiculous, especially when you compare those bonds with bonds of countries nearing default, like Belize. Or other so-called "risky" countries, like Venezuela. Since the Greek situation was/is not abnormal, the fault is not Greece's. You haven't provided a single argument to counter that.
Putin33 (111 D)
06 Oct 11 UTC
Stu Varney is a typical rich rightwing blowhard who likes to engage in macho posturing and blame the victim for everything. Much like a lot of the Greek haters here.

Ancient Med Stalemate Lines
I don't know if anyone is interested in studying or analyzing things like that, but I am. When I was first starting to play diplomacy (back in, oh, February?), I immersed myself in reading all about the strategies and theories that people had written articles on. Since discovering this site (back in, oh, last week?) I've really come to enjoy the Ancient Med variant.
