game won before retreats
I noticed that games end if someone gets to 18 centers after a fall diplomacy phase. But what if a dislodged unit could retreat to a center of the winner, stopping his win? The question is academic - I have not seen a game where this would have mattered.

Nothing more natural than doing something that makes your peception of the world change for a brief period. Whether's it's in the form of a man drinking a few beers in the pub, a teenager jumping on a rollercoaster to pump some more adrenaline into his system, a girl taking some peculiar tablet at a rave, or a young child spinning round and round in circles to make the world go wonky, we have all done it. The respective risks behind such activities is another matter though.

I want to clarify something. Do you want to actually take more risks, or do you just want to lose the annoying fear that puts you off doing certain fun activities?

When it comes down to it, there is no risk in killing a spider (unless you happen to live with a woman who takes a dim view of hurting any living creatures with the sole exception of the man she lives with). There is also next to no risk in activities such as sky diving, bungee jumping, rollercoasters, air travel etc etc, although for some reason people associate them with risk and bravery.

On the other hand you can get geneuinely risky activities that are treated as completely mundane. Things like driving [esp when tired], Living in London, drinking [until you find out whether you're one of those unfornate people who can get addicted to it], climbing a ladder to paint a house and reaching out a little bit too far to get at the small hard to reach section etc etc.

My guess is that you've probaly done quite a few risky activities without realising it, and if you get that into your head then the relatively risk free but exciting looking things should be easy enough to take up.

In case you actually try drinking, CM, don't be a cheapskate and aim for some quality alcohol. I don't know the situation in the USA but here in my country you can get pretty drunk for much less than 1 USD. I sucessfullly tried that in my teens with the wine and coke mix and trust me, it's the perfect way to headaches, vomiting and becoming abstinent. It's not as bad as Russian methanol-heavy homedistilled vodka but bloody bastards evade VAT by using denaturated alcohol and that's just nasty.
SGrabowski (547 D)

If you're too afraid to do something CM, ask for help. Talk to a parent, an older adult with whom you are close (if your parents won't or can't help), a good friend your own age, most anyone who will respond with kindness and understanding, really. Find someone you trust to share your fear with, and they will help you get over it.

I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this yet. Having another person there with you (no matter what you are doing) makes it easier. If you fail, you can laugh together at the problem and work out a way so that next time you don't fail, and if you succeed, you have someone there to give you positive reinforcement, associating overcoming fears with good feelings, and therefore making it more likely to happen again in the future.

Drink to forget
Drink to get drunk
Drink to improve your eyesight (beer goggles)
Don't drink and drive, you might spill your drink
Don't drink and swim, the pool/ocean/lake water dilutes the drink
Don't drink on a dare unless you are sure you can beat the other person

Also, if your fear is so debilitating that it keeps you from doing anything, perhaps you should speak with a professional counselor or psychiatrist. They are trained to help men and women overcome exactly what it is you are describing.

Personally, I don't hold much stock with those professions, as I have found that most of the time, such problems can be worked out by yourself or with the help of close friends, who both know you better and have a more intimate knowledge of what makes you tick. But if you don't have anyone close like that, or are too afraid to approach them, then a professional is the answer. There is no need to be afraid because they are bound by law to not reveal anything they learn to other people, and they are specifically prepared to be able to listen to and help you in a number of different ways.

"how can I take more risks without being reckless?"
Buy a motorbike - you are in full control so you can hold back from being reckless, yet it's very risky due to the nature of it.

"I would say that I'm too scared to live life the way I want to live it (as well as the way God wants me to live it as well). And I don't know what to change or how to change it so that I can actually start living. "

There's your problem right there. Are you living for God or yourself? You can't do both.

Seems to me you are afraid of God, not life. God forgives...life doesn't.
Scmoo472 (1933 D)

If your under my age, which as Draug said would make it true. Being yourself is the most reckless thing you could ever do. It is as well the hardest thing for someone of your age to do. Because if they aren't "cool" or "in" you will be cast aside. Just try it. Be who you want to be for 1 day. Don't let yourself tell yourself what your not going to do.. Think of things you WANT to do. (Aside from drinking, drugs, illegal things)
@ulytau: "Unless you hide a secret alcoholic potential, you'll be fine" Well, my dad is an alcoholic and his dad was as well, so, yeah.

@Tettleton: "Not drinking is a weakness because it shows you aren't capable of handling it."
*cough*troll*cough*

@Octavious: "I want to clarify something. Do you want to actually take more risks, or do you just want to lose the annoying fear that puts you off doing certain fun activities?"

Well, both. However, stuff life skydiving, while I would be scared, I'd still be able to do it, because I know it isn't that risky. That's also why I love rollercoasters; they're fun and not risky. It's the things that might cause pain that scare. Such as approaching a girl. I'm afraid she might call me a loser or something. And when I was little, I was too scared to climb trees because I was afraid I might cut myself on the tree and I was afraid I might fall.
"a teenager jumping on a rollercoaster to pump some more adrenaline into his system" Does that really alter your mind at all?

@Draug: "And if you are out with friends drinking," None of my close friends drink. It's generally the popular kids that drink, and I'm not popular at all.

@Darwyn: "Are you living for God or yourself?"
I live for God first, and if God wants me to do something, I want to do it as well. But God doesn't make all my decsions for me, and when that is the case, I add what I personally want into the equation.

Octavious (2701 D)

@ CM

Does that really alter your mind at all?

Very much so. Well, adrenaline does anyway. Personally I find rollercoasters and skydiving to be rather boring and tedious experiences, but that's just me. But no, on the occasions that the adrenaline has been pumping my whole descision making process gets skewed and I choose to do things that I'd never dream of attempting normally. It's all rather fun.

When it comes down to it, if it's part of God's plan for you to die then you will die, be it via climbing a skyscraper without any safety equipment or sitting at home drinking tea when there's a gas explosion. All you can do is control what you do when you're alive. The risk of looking like a twat when chatting up a girl is 100%. All we blokes get to control is when it happens. As far as injuries go... well... hospitals a full of sexy nurses, and chicks dig scars and really love signing plaser casts ;)
@Octavious: it's kind of deeper than that. It's like I have a deep, inborn fear of pain that keeps me from doing a lot of things. Logic won't help to turn that fear off.

My Christian faith is the reason i do not drink. However it is not a sin. Paul makes clear (as well as Jesus) that it is not what goes into a person that makes them unclean but what comes out. So don't let baptists tell you otherwise. However, while it is not a sin, it is still a wiser choice not to. Just the fact that it harms the body is proof that God did not truly intend it for us. If you have to drink to have fun then you are a boring person. With that being said it is fine if you want to try it or even continue drinking once in a while. God does not hold you to any other standard than loving your neighbor and resisting sin. Your choice.

@CM

You are a sophomore in HS, correct? You shouldn't be drinking. You're brain hasn't fully developed; you can damage your brain easier and you're more likely to form a dependence.

I didn't start drinking until I was a Junior in College, iirc. It wasn't for any philosophical or fear-based reason; I just wasn't interested in it until then. Even now, I drink less than once a week and rarely get drunk. I have plenty of friends who drink a lot and plenty of friends who never drink at all. It's how you want to live your life.

In regards to fears, this is a typical symptom of Aspergers, no? I'd have to imagine there are people more qualified then us to help you. However, I will off this suggestion:

Chose one thing you want to over-come, say, spiders. And focus on that one goal. You won't succeed if you try to over-come every fear at once. Also, are you able to differentiate between a fear and a phobia? For instance, I'm a little nervous of falling when I climb up a ladder, but I have a friend who can't do it without passing out. I'd suggest not starting off by trying to conquer a full-blown phobia.
SuperSteve (894 D)
04 Aug 11 UTC
You have plenty of time to get drunk later. I wouldn't worry about drinking. Alcohol is one heck of a dangerous drug, as drugs go.

Your real issue is your anxiety. I don't know how bad it is, but I suspect that the fear of alcohol is a symptom of the bigger issue of excessive anxiety.

I would recommend dealing with the anxiety.

@ The Prussian,
"Just the fact that it harms the body is proof that God did not truly intend it for us."
How would you explain the story of Jezus creating Wine at a marriage party? I think God gave us wine etc to enjoy, but like you said, up till certain extend.
Darwyn (1601 D)
04 Aug 11 UTC
"I live for God first..."

With all due respect, this is your problem. You are aren't afraid of alcohol or anything else, I suspect. You are afraid of upsetting Him.

Start living for you and the anxiety from trying to live up to unreasonable expectations will go away. As I said, God will forgive you. He gave you free will...and Life is far too short to be living it for anyone else...including God.

Other than that, I'd say abgemacht has sound advice.
@Abge: I never said I want to drink now. I don't. In regards to my asperger's, I've never heard of irrational fears being a symptom of it, but I haven't really looked that closely.

@SuperSteve: I don't ever want to get drunk ever, even if I do drink.

@Darwyn: Using the fact that God will forgive you as an excuse to sin is, in itself, sinful. There's a parable about that but I'm too lazy to find it. Instead, I'll give an analogy of my own. Let's say you're really angry at a guy, and you want to kill him. Would it be fine to say, "Killing this guy is wrong, but hey, God will forgive me!" and then go and do it?

God is always supposed to be first: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength."
And then you and everyone else are supposed to be at the same level of priority after God: "Love your neighbor as yourself."

But just because God is first doesn't mean you have to give all your money to the poor and move to a third-world country. At least, I don't think it does. Some things Jesus has said suggest that, but He may have been exaggerating to make a point. So when God isn't specifically telling me to do or not to do something, I'm free to live for myself as long as it doesn't hurt God or another person, directly or indirectly.
youradhere (1345 D)
04 Aug 11 UTC
@Conservative Man: Don't listen to these prudes. Drinking is fun. Either for the taste, or the effect, it's fun. But don't confuse the illegal with the risky. Alcohol and risk are not synonymous, and if you make drinking risky, it becomes a good deal less fun.

Most activities are not inherently "risky". I can't speak for anyone else, but personally, I get more of a thrill taking risks by engaging in new things, even if they are as "non-risky" as taking an interesting class. Risk is much broader than the physical.
Darwyn (1601 D)
04 Aug 11 UTC
Well, I didn't quite mean that you are free to sin since God will forgive you. I'm saying that living life for you is greater than living for God. This is my opinion of course...but I suspect that what makes you afraid isn't necessarily the object of your fear...it's the fear of disappointing God given His expectations.

In other words, I don't think you are afraid of alcohol...I think you are afraid you might do something to upset Him while under its influence.
Darwyn (1601 D)
04 Aug 11 UTC
And yes, under the right circumstances, drinking is fun.

But you will never know until you try it. I wouldn't let God stop you from doing that.
@Darwyn: God is more important than I am. Period. But on the subject on drinking, the reason I'm scared is because I don't know what it feels like and the idea of altering my mind creeps me out and unsettles me.

And anyway, what about my other fears (fears of anything that might cause pain)?
krellin (80 DX)
04 Aug 11 UTC
Regarding alcohol - if you are not interested in it, who cares what your "peers" are doing. and are they really your peers? that's the real question, isn't it? I think you need to find "friends" that you care about, instead of having "peers" that you know little about. but, seriously, stay away from alcohol. For me, personally, it represents a personal problem that I wouldn't have if I had never started. It runs in the family...and it fuels far to many obnoxious trolling episodes! :P

Regarding "scary" mind altering things: ever go to an amusement park and ride roller coasters or other "scary" rides? We do that to alter our minds...to cause our bodies to release chemicals that alter our thinking and change the way we feel. I remember clearly my daughter standing in line with me at Cedar Point to ride Top Thrill Dragster, and by the time we made it to the front of the line, she literally was crying out of fear...and she screamed at the top of her lungs the entire ride...and then laughed her ass off and wanted to ride it again. That, I think, is a quintessentially human thing.

Regarding mind altering substances...if you are going to alter your mind, smoke pot. You can't overdose and die. It won't destroy your liver. You get the munchies instead of getting angry. It is a *far* superior drug to alcohol...
Darwyn (1601 D)
04 Aug 11 UTC
"the reason I'm scared is because I don't know what it feels like and the idea of altering my mind creeps me out and unsettles "

In that case, it's not quite as mind altering as you may think. Just take it slow.
youradhere (1345 D)
04 Aug 11 UTC
Remember that people react differently to alcohol. "Altering your mind" is an exaggeration, IMO. This isn't LSD.

It might sound stupid, but I think it's somewhat silly to worry about the fear of physical pain. It might be a good idea to expose yourself in sports and such, just to experience some mild pain, but it probably isn't a big deal in the long run. At this point, our society requires more mental work than physical, so a fear of pain isn't something that should hold you back too much in the long run.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
04 Aug 11 UTC
I agree. Honestly, as long as you don't break your neck, you can recover from most physical accidents. Break an arm? It'll be fine in 6 months. I wouldn't recommend base jumping, but most sports are harmless.
youradhere (1345 D)
04 Aug 11 UTC
Wait I'm giving someone advice on the internet lol
@Darwyn: I know it isn't very mind altering. That doesn't change the fact that the idea seems weird and unnatural to me.
krellin (80 DX)
04 Aug 11 UTC
@youradhere : Uhhh....FAIL. If you don't think that alcohol alters the mind...and if you don't think it alters teh mind of *everyone* who consumes it....you are sadly mistaken and know little about human physiology and alcohol. While it may affect people different (angry, happy, decent chicks become skanks (lol), etc,) it most certainyl does affect everyone.
