I need help joining games
Hello Developer: The game won't let me join games. Why would that be? I log in correctly, even changed my password, logged out then back in, but when I try to join games the system tells me I am using an incorrect password.

Is there a different password for joining games??? Obviously I am using the corrrect password to sign in, otherwise this wouldn't be happening, so I am confused.

divide your phases by about 3*2^3, oh and I don't care for public press games. I'd rather that be traditional press. Also, I need points for the leagues, so could we make it be x^5+ 8x + 2 D where !(x>2)?

Stop doing silly arithmetic and get abstract already...jeez

Well, rlumley, battleships traveled in divisions of four or five (sometimes more), plus escort ships (often early subs to watch for U-boats), so Battleship Divison Nine will form a circle and let our subs come in and do their thing after the initial bombardment.

@Kat: I'm a C#.Net developer mostly working in ASP.Net right now. I'm also and old timer so I know VB, VB.Net, Classic ASP, C, C++, SQL (Transact and others), and I'm certified in Java (JDK 1.4 Enterprise, Standard, and Micro) and know LotusScript (used to be a Notes and Domino developer) and obviously javascript, VBScript, and JScript. I've been developing since about 1982, so I've seen a lot. When I was in college, they were still teaching CoBOL, ForTran, RPG, OS/JCL, 360/370 Assembler, and were just getting into the PC languages. "BASIC" (MS QuickBASIC & AppleBASIC), Pascal, and C were the PC based ones offered where I went to college.

I assume in your armflexing you've taken to heart the lessons of the following, gentlemen:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_off_Samar
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_battleship_Yamato#Operation_Ten-Go

Summary: If battleships get in gun range of carriers, the carriers are pretty much hosed.
Of course, the problem is surviving long enough to get into gun range
Draugnar (0 DX)
16 Jul 10 UTC
Funny you should bring up one of my favorite Japanese battleships... If it weren't for Allied intelligence intercepting the plans, Operation Ten-Go might have ended very differently.

If a Battleship group (complete with cruisers and destroyers) can get in undetected, the Carrier groups are usually laid to waste. If not and the Carriers can maintain their distance so only the largets guns might reach them (or none at all as in the Battle of Midway), the Carriers' aircraft have the upper hand. It's like squashing a hornets nest while all of them are still inside versus trying to kill the individual hornets without being able to get close enough to the nest to damage it.

Can you explain Rank-Null or Heine-Borel? That's a good place to start.

What do you do now?
getcialis4free (179 D)
17 Jul 10 UTC
Rank-nullity I could definitely do, though by "explain" I hope you mean just have it in front of me and explain it to someone else, not actually prove it.

Heine-Borel, I have no idea what that is. Not math I ever took.

I had no idea what kinda math you did in your minor, so kinda just threw out one algebra and one topology thing.

I took the basic Calc/Linear Algebra/ODE-type stuff, plus a bunch of prob & stat.

I'm an economics major with a minor in physics.

Ill explain to you all why I should be allowed in by using shroedingers cat but it would be over the heads of linear thinking engineers like yourselves.

Why small bet? Your expected payoff from this game not looking too good?
MadMarx (36299 D(G))

I can't join a new game until September or so, but am curious if an architect would qualify? I have more of an engineer's brain and have done lateral and gravity analysis on many projects (rather than hiring an engineer). I started out as a math major and almost minored in computer science (didn't realize a computer science internships would not count towards a minor). I must admit, I don't know most of what's being talked about on this thread, but I've read every word, so that must count for something, right?! ;-)
centurion1 (1478 D)

Econ ftw ava!!!

I'm ridiculously frugal with my points now so I don't blow them all in a single game or something. Being scared and being realistics are two different things
ava2790 (232 D(S))
17 Jul 10 UTC
Nah man you just gotta assume you're rational and model the game as a lottery and calculate your expected payoff. If it's ≥ your expected utility from the game you're good :P
jodabomb24 (100 D)
17 Jul 10 UTC
I'd be willing to join, although you may laugh; I'm still in school, but I am two grade levels ahead in math, along with about ten others. I also share a similar philosophy when it comes to points and frugality.

Way to many outside variables to calculate a realistic statistic. Like player aptitude for one.
ava2790 (232 D(S))
17 Jul 10 UTC
Nah lottery model is just simple probability. Assume every other player is the same person :P
centurion1 (1478 D)
17 Jul 10 UTC
You can't though it breaks the game. The probability model simpliy won't work in this situation.

Occam's Razor and God
Occam's Razor is a theory that basically says that the least complicated option is usually the correct one. Atheists have been using this theory to state that God cannot exist, because a universe without God is simpler than a universe with God. (Continued)

Heaps Of New, Never-Before-Seen Texts Of Franz Kafka Found! (But Trapped In Court!)
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100721/ap_on_re_mi_ea/ml_israel_kafka_trial I mean WOW! One of the greatest writers of modern times...who knows what all these boxes of original texts might hold! They MUST be released! (Anyone else as excited as I am...really, it's like finding a never-before-seen play of Shakespeare's or never-heard Beatles songs or *insert great artist+never seen work here!* Think of what it could be...what MORE Kafka might have written!)

If I Were a Muslim, I'd Be Offended...And Why Can't Palin Learn When To Shut Up...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20100719/pl_politico/39899 Now don't get me wrong, a mosque built near Ground Zero in NYC is a bit odd and I have mixed feelings about the issue, but to make the connection and say Muslims, rather than terrorists perverting Islam, attacked us bordering on outright bigotry. "Peace-seeking Muslims, pls understand, Ground Zero mosque is UNNECESSARY provocation; it stabs hearts. Pls reject it in interest of healing," Nice, Palin, nice...
