Is it poor sportsmanship or what?
What would you call it if a player who is obviously going to win because they have 17 supply centers decides not to take a supply center, but is instead intent on letting a weaker "friend" take you completely over from 13 SC's to 0. Just wondering and I would love to see your answers.

Support for another power's attack in a gunboat game?
Does that seem suspicious to you? Check out this board (http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=8544). Ita supports (Tur) A Bul-Gre and (Rus) A Tyr-Vie. In a gunboat game, that's either uncanny anticipation or dodgy coordination. I'd bring it up in the game's global chat, but I don't want to break silence.

top tournament
Looking at the Hall of fame, it is striking to me how many very high pot people is there. There is "material" for a over-2000 tournament (31 players have more than 2000 points), or even an over-3000 tournament (13 such players; with one more volunteer, two full games could be launched)..
As a very interested spectator (not enough time to be an active player currently), I wish such a tournament organization might happen.

Game vanishing
I created a game but forgot to give it a name... as it had password, I just have created another. What will happen when time runs out and only one player (me) is left in it? I get my points back and the game disappears, I hope/guess. But... is it true?

A suggestion for Kestas and other developers
I wanted to suggest that you split the "games" tab into "CD openings" and "pre-game" or whatever. and I think you should only allow players who have FINISHED a game to play a CD position. (more explanation below)...

Game "Enemies Closer"
A new game, pot: 75.

I am creating it mainly so me and a couple (2-3) of my friends at UW-Eau Claire can play diplomacy, but we'll need more players. I can promise (at least on my part) that there will be no metagaming, and I guarantee that we all stab each other pretty often, so no need to worry about "unbreakable" game-ruining alliances.

New Team Tournament
So I had an idea for a new tournament played in teams. All entrants would be grouped into teams of 3, and every game would be between 2 teams with CD Italy. I would use the ghost ratings to assign teams. Does this sound appealing to anyone? Any suggestions? This idea needs refining, and if the tournament happens it won't be for at least a month or so.

Yet another Kestas/Developer suggestion
There are individuals that one does not get along with, or has suspicions of multi-accounting/meta-gaming. It would be very useful if during the game set-up process (or even in my own options menu for a more permanent solution) I could make a public game that excluded certain players, or simply have them denied access to games I am playing.

Unpause - Beginnings Autumn 1903, Retreats
This game was paused cause one of the players lives in Victoria - Australia and asked for during fthe fires.
Now, that player wrote /unpause, like all the players, except one that has ZERO SC and is not connecting anymore /he has only one more game running and is almost finished too).

Could someone unpause it for us?

Control (Loss) of Supply Centers
France moved into Spain in the Spring and then on to Portugal in the Fall, and somehow managed to lose "control" of Spain at the close of the Fall turn. I am under the impression that control is maintained until it is taken away. Is the loss of a supply center by moving from it a rule specific to this site or am I missing something?

I use and abuse the pope for the tool he is. recruit priest and send them to non catholic areas, they achieve higher ranks that way and become cardinals, thet way you can either get one of them elected as pope or have a strong say in who gets to be pope, then the pope likes you and if you a half way thru a war with a catholic faction and he tells you to stop you can ignore him- he will just dislike you rather than the more painful and troublesome excommunication. i also abuse crusades...just like they did in history. Call a crusade on the non catholic faction or even better an excomminicated catholic faction, load up on cheap units and get your expensive knights into the crusade army- upkeep is free while on crusades, pillage and take over as many cities as you can before the crusade finishes- dont finish it too early. when the srudae stops you could be hit with a lot of expensive upkeep uniuts or useless cannon fodder unist so make sure you get those guys to go frontal on enemy spearmen during the last few battles of the crusades- mean i know but thats the way to win on Very Hard. recruit merchants and send them off to tthe far south-sub sahara or extreme east, that way the can make around 1000 gold coins a turn rather than the piddling money they can make nearer home.

mongols- face them with spearmen, archers and cannons/catapults etc, let them attack you, sit in the highest spot on the map and make them pay for attacking you, if they have loads on lancers they might break thru and beat you but if not you can just sit back and make them pay. well defended cities with loads of archers and spearmen should eb able to hold off a few mongol hordes. i have heard other peopledo something more creative, take a city far away from your other cities and then when the mongols arrive give it to them, they will go towards that city, i havent tried this yet but.

timurids? game is over by the time they appear mostly inst it?

A little bit of Mexico is on the western edge of the map and the Aztecs hang out there.

What is the computer like on very hard?
Centurian (3257 D)
05 Feb 09 UTC
Its basically the dame old computer except they get tons of money for no reason and their troops are impossble to break. Its really frustrating actually and I think takes away from the realism of the game. You can't really play less than hard though if you want it to be competitive.
sean (3490 D(B))
05 Feb 09 UTC
battle mode very hard is not that difficult i think. good human generals will beat a similar size AI army on very hard level unless your troop`s morale is very low, but strategic mode on very hard is difficult, basically it seems everyone wants a piece of you. corner countries are easier of course- egypt, moors, england, scotland, denmark, ruskies. my rule of thumb is dont start any wars ever but if some one tries to have a bit of you make sure you finish them off completely.

as for the new lands and the aztecs, fighting in the jungles can be quite difficult, on an open space european cavalry will make mincemeat of guys in lioncloths carrying sharpened fruit but in the jungle its duiffcult to see whats going on and you can be taught a painful lesson.
Noirin (2827 D)

(Battles)
In Rome very hard gave a morale boost and (I think) boosted the strength of the units.
In Medieval very hard adds more routines to the AI and gives a minor morale boost, but nothing special. The human is still superior, especially because he can pause the game :D

My proudest victory to date was the defense of Marseilles from the Milanese (I was England) - I had two units of spears, they had far more troops than me. I didn't expect to win, but I just opened the gate and positioned all my men in it, forcing the enemy into a bottleneck and one by one they broke and fled.

Was so pleased : )
Lord Alex (169 D)
05 Feb 09 UTC
Yeah, i think that is called the 300 manuever. (when you place a ton of spears at your gate)
trim101 (363 D)
05 Feb 09 UTC
its that kind of situation where i hate the ai they must have attacked marseilles with siege equipment so they could have just bye passed the gate
Centurian (3257 D)
05 Feb 09 UTC
Defending cities is ridiculously easy. The gate bottleneck combined with not being able to break in the centre and the tight roads to get the enemy all caught in. I usually simulate city defences on principle for this reason.

Bridge battles are the easiest way to a heroic victory. If just one of their units breaks on the bridge the battle is as good as over.
sean (3490 D(B))
05 Feb 09 UTC
nothing nicer than 4 or 5 catapults and single unit of spearmen guarding a bridge. set the catapults to flame mode and watch the sky (and their troops) light up
sean (3490 D(B))
05 Feb 09 UTC
yes i agree centurian, defending cities is too easy. its only doesnt work if the ai hits you with good quality troops and your guys rout due to losing too many men. ive lost cities due to poor garrisoning decisions but
Noirin (2827 D)
05 Feb 09 UTC
For cities I usually use a different system: I place the infantry on a line at the end of the road leading to the centre, and use the cavalry to attack the enemies from behind when they engage the infantry.
This works also when they use ladders or can break the walls, you just need infantry good enough to hold the line long enough (placing the general right behind them might help them hold)
Noirin (2827 D)
05 Feb 09 UTC
If you have enough cavalry open battles are easy too, just make them break their formation by chasing your cavalry, then, when their troops start being scattered, charge their pieces one at a time with your infantry.
Lord Alex (169 D)
05 Feb 09 UTC
Or, use your cavalry to chase there units right into your charging infantry. :)
Dr. Evil (100 D)
05 Feb 09 UTC
Yeah, that is always fun.

I am psyched about the new total war, been watching videos of it ALL day (after school)

Go to gamespot online to see vids
Best Campaign was as Hungary. Immediately allied Poland, Venice Holy Roman Empire. Venice Betrayed me so I allied Milan, Destroyed Venice while keeping the Byz at Bay (I routinely was beating armies 3-4 times my size on very hard with only calvary/ horse archers.)

*Best Part* Before I could turn on the Byzantines and repay them for their raids the smart little buggers allied with the polish, HRE, and Milan. I cant attack the Byz without destroying my 3 alliances (and therefore bringing 4 nations armies on me which is invevitable in very hard) so I waited till the HRE was excommunicated, and I asked the Pope to declare a crusade on one of their cities. He did and Poland and Milan declare war on HRE breaking their alliances with the Byz. I fulfill the crusade and after beating the HRE and the betrayal of Milan and Sicily I finally am able to turn on the Byz.

By then I finally have money, take a bunch of Islands and am making rediculous amounts from trade. I control the college which isnt hard to do. Mongols attack, I suffer my first major loss to them and I had to leave the game (semester starting) just as I began to understand how to beat them. Dont know if Ill ever be able to finish with Empire coming out but that crusade maneuver was worth it (only one from me that competes was gaining reversing my excommunication by assassinating the pope with scottland)

Lord Alex (169 D)
06 Feb 09 UTC
I havent.

Does anyone know the easiest and hardest factions to play as?
sean (3490 D(B))
06 Feb 09 UTC
England would be the easiest i would say. island as a natural defense, longbowmen and billman make for cheap but effective billmen army.
As for the hardest...mmm... the Italians factions are surrounded by everyone but the Italian spear militia are a pretty fine bunch of lads so maybe not them. Byzantium is also surrounded by enemies, no pope to protect them , no power to call jihads or crusades.
Ive fought the Timurids, Just Mongols with Elephants

does anyone here use STEAM? any problems? joys? i have never tried them but that seems to be the way to go to get empires if one doesnt live near a pc store or in a non english speaking country but wants the english language version.
Lord Alex (169 D)
07 Feb 09 UTC
I think the Spanish have it fairly easy too. They start off next to lots of Rebel settlements and they can invade the islamic factions for easy cities without fear of excommunication.
Lord Alex (169 D)
