Monetization via distributed processing ?
After the trial a week ago distributed processing seems to be a potentially effective way to monetize the site without irritating ads or premium accounts. It's not as lucrative, but it is better and more consistent than donations, and it would still provide an incentive for me to work on the more mundane coding which I'm otherwise not interested in

I think most people would gladly trade some (otherwise unused) CPU usage while playing to see further development on the site (and perhaps leave their browsers open as an alternative to direct donation).
But I'd like to hear from those who experienced crashes a week ago, it was the only negative aspect of the trial and it seemed to only be a small subset of Firefox 3.0.1 users, so hopefully it can be resolved and I can go ahead with it

Why was Good Times-2 drawn?
Not all of the players voted for a draw, and now I have received less points than I paid to buy-into the game.
Could a Moderator/Administrator explain and possibly rectify the situation?

Massive NMR's in -01 why do you punish yourselves this way?
I just looked at the open games and found two that stand out with 3 or 4 countries that did not move in 1901. Why are you all remaining people playing these games? Call for a draw and end the misery. It is not Diplomacy if you do not have 7 active players.

Rules Download
New to the game and the site... where do I download a complete set of rules? The obvious ones I get, but the more remote ones I'm having trouble with. For instance, if I make an attack out of a country, can an army retreat into it from if dislodged out of another area (not where the attack is directed)? Is my support to a third country cut when the army attacking me is dislodged?

@moderators or Kestas
I took over a cd in game http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=6148 only to find that all the other players had voted for a draw in a paused game. What are our options now? If I allow the game to be drawn, what is my return on my investment in points? Might I be permitted to be removed from the game, as if I had never joined, so that I do not take a "draw"?

Cheaters
In a recently initiated game (Good times-2), 5 accounts were made and joined a 100 point game all together and all within one hour of each other. Additionally, they all submitted and finalized orders within this same hour and all appear to be working toward the two countries not controlled by the suspected owner of the 5. If you look at england's opening in particular, the move to Clyde seems odd.

Rescuable Game
The game is paused, so no-one starts in a CD position.
It is a high buy-in, but as the points are added to the pot, you stand to make a significant profit.

Yeah, what doesn't make sense? I personally am opposed to homosexuality but people can do what they want in their private lives. I just don't want Divine or every theater kid I've ever met in my face telling me I'm intolerant because I don't have unconditional acceptance.

I'm totally tolerant to homosexuality but it's the predominantly homosexual culture that obsessively focuses on sexuality and has made stereotypes out of homosexuality that I dislike. I'm also tolerant of straight people, as long as they keep THAT in the closet too.

No. You said you supported murdering unintelligent people. That smells like eugenics.

valoishapsburg (314 D)

You dont have to be tolerant Inviticus, but if the situation were reversed I dont think I would enjoy people thinking something is wrong because I am heterosexual. Also, I've actually read that some psychologists are beginning to believe that people are naturally bisexual and that enviroment and other factors shape sexuality in any of the multitude of directions.

But I agree that there are some homosexuals, generally the teenage ones, that actually conform to the stereotype. However, many of my gay friends do not

I dont see why people are so afraid of them. It's ridiculous.
can we keep this conversation supportive. =) I didnt intend this post for people to talk negatively about each other's opinions, but rather to provide a gateway for all homosexual players to just let diplomacy world know that we are also part of the community and that we exist. This should also be an opportunity for non-homosexuals to prove to others that our society is evolving into a more "equality for all" environment. =)

why do gay people always beg for attention by outrageously kissing in public, holding hands long and wide for everyone to see and announcing their sexuality on a board game forum?
Invictus (240 D)
27 Oct 08 UTC
Well, I don't believe your "everyone's bi" ideas, but you have a good point on the other part. It's moot however, because nothing is wrong with heterosexuality even if you consider it on a purely biological, beastly level.

I admit none of my gay friends are close friends, but from what I know of them they fit the stereotypes like a fine velvet glove. Even the one who wants to be a rabbi calls himself a "bear."

People are afraid of what they don't understand, and I don't know how a straight person, especially a guy, can ever really understand what it must mean to be gay. But as long as there's no violence I don't see a problem there.
valoishapsburg (314 D)
27 Oct 08 UTC
damn, it almost sounds like they do the exact same things straight people do.
valoishapsburg (314 D)
27 Oct 08 UTC
Well, it wasnt my idea, I wouldnt have thought of it. I can, however, tell you the book that the theory came out of. I just have to find the book first. Inviticus, you also have to remember that Humans are not the only animals that form homosexual relationships.

I dont understand whats it like to be gay, you're right. But I also dont understand what its like to be a woman either. I agree with you on the violence part though.
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
27 Oct 08 UTC
"why do gay people always beg for attention by outrageously kissing in public, holding hands long and wide for everyone to see and announcing their sexuality on a board game forum?"

I'll oppose gay people kissing and holdings hands in public when straight people stop as well.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
27 Oct 08 UTC
I oppose both.

Sexuality is a waste of resources, an infernal and primitive preoccupation of mankind.

Not to mention the counter-evolutionary status of homosexuality.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
27 Oct 08 UTC
I don't mean actual reproduction I mean all the stigma, worry, thought, and perplexion, talk, wasted resources and wasted time that comes with it.
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
27 Oct 08 UTC
Actually, Thucydides, I would say if there was not opposition to gays adopting, a healthy gay population would be evolutionarily beneficial because they could care for abandoned or orphaned children.

This is just a quick notice that I'm planning on killing my yahoo mail account. This means that I would like to open a new account on this site using a different email/password. I will not be joining any single game with both accounts and I plan to let the games on my yahoo associated account wind down before I switch.
