Diplomacy Update?
When will the update occur which allows us to support convoyed armies. This is a critical aspect of the game and definately affects the way I play (In some cases it limits my success.) Let me know

What is up with people talking out of character in games?
What is up with people talking out of character in games? This is Diplomacy. Press is part of the game. No need for comments like "I'm not an idiot, I've won DipCons" and "please only send messages when you know what you are doing."

Press is a vital part of the game, to say that people shouldn't be communicating, in character, is laughable.

Where did Diplomacy get its name.
Why is Diplomacy called "Diplomacy" when the entire game is based around war. There is a board game, "Settlers of Catan" which focuses entirely on economics and bartering with resoures. That game has the same merit to be called Diplomacy as "Diplomacy" or "Axis and Allies."

I am curious of alternate (logical) names for this game.

Possible bug in "The Politics"
I am Russia in our game, The Politics, and I posted a move that did not occur correctly. I supported my fleet into Constantinople, and Austria moved his armies so there could only have been one support. At a minimum neither of us should have had any units there, or if he did not support the move into Con. then I would have taken it. Please advise?

Sat 02 AM Spring 1904, Diplomacy: Your army at Ankara successfully supported the fleet at Black Sea move to Constantinople.
Sat 02 AM Spring 1904, Diplomacy: Your fleet at Black Sea moving into Constantinople recieved move support from the army at Ankara.
Sat 02 AM Spring 1904, Diplomacy: Your fleet at Black Sea attempted to attack the army at Constantinople, but failed.

Supporting convoy attacks?
Is it possible to support an army that attacks via a convoy? If so, how is this done? In a recent game (The LO), France supported a convoyed army to Holland, but failed with the following message:

Autumn 1902, Diplomacy: Your army at Belgium's move support wasn't accepted by the unit which support was being given to.

Is there something special that needs to be done for this to work??? I would rather not try again until I am sure it is possible to do this...

Multiple Accounts?
I dont think this is such a big problem yet but in order to prevent further abuse what is being done about people making multiple accounts and making them all join one game. Since a person might control 2 characters in one game he already has a perma. alliance with themselves and can crush countries near him. Is there a 1 account per ip being enforced or anything?

so, is anybody going to do anything against multiple accounts? Why now make it so that accounts coming from same ip adresses can't participate in the same game? It doesn't solve the problem but at least makes it harder for cheaters
dangermouse (5551 D)
18 Apr 07 UTC
Like I said, this has already been discussed and it is not feasible to tie accounts to IP addresses for a number of reasons which, again, have been discussed at length. You're just going to have to wait until the next version.
drzli (1114 D)
18 Apr 07 UTC
and I quote again since you don't bother reading posts
"Why now make it so that accounts coming from same ip adresses can't participate in the same game?"
Noodlebug (1812 D)
18 Apr 07 UTC
Actually that's quite a good idea drzli... it wouldn't stop schoolchums in the same lab playing Diplomacy, but it would stop them packing games with alliances, they'd just have to play with strangers instead like the rest of us do.

Then again, most of them would probably only sign up to play fun games against each other. How about (when a rating system is finally introduced) you have rated and unrated games, and rated games have the IP restriction, whereas there are no restrictions on unrated games? Or is that getting way too complicated? :P
dangermouse (5551 D)
18 Apr 07 UTC
What about people that sign on from multiple locations or those with dynamic IPs? Are you going to require that players always sign on from the same IP? Or if someone signs on from several locations then prevent anyone else from signing on from any of the same?
dangermouse (5551 D)
18 Apr 07 UTC
And yes, I obviously did read your post and answered it.
aoe3rules (949 D)
19 Apr 07 UTC
noodlebug's idea is great. there could be unrated games with no ip restrictions.

oh, and we don't always "pack games with alliances". sure, Sith Dragon 6 and i always have an alliance... against day1dreamer and Zhingerton. in non-private games we've stabbed each other a lot.

Thanks! Whilst absense on holiday, I get given the job of crediting people with money just for joining loads of games :o
Still, personally I am currently in a different country, so IP tying would REALLY wreck my current chances!!!
The only way I can see to do it would be to log every IP a player uses, and notice any sets which are suspiciously alike. This would take into account maybe one which could be a work address, but if players went on at home, then both used IP's would be identical, and so they would show up...
drzli (1114 D)
19 Apr 07 UTC
I guess logging idea is ok and accounts should be allowed to use 2-3 IPs for logging, that is all ok. Thing we want to neutralize here is multiple accounts with the same ip - they should be allowed to play to honor all those people behind NATs and in univs/schools/cyber cafes, but they should not be allowed to play in the same games. It's the only way to try and bring some sense into losers that cheat in diplomacy. I am currently in a game with a cheater and it's not fun. Instead of 7 different players playing a relaxing game I am forced to look at one person slowly helping himself win a game by cheating. All I want is a chance to play with different and mature people. It's not about winning or losing, it's about having a chance to dabble in diplomacy and intrigue, a chance not to know which country shall win. That's all I ask
Chrispminis (916 D)
19 Apr 07 UTC
I honestly cannot really comment further on this, until kestas' uber scoring system comes out. There's a good chance it will prevent multiple accounts, or at least make multiple accounts unfeasible.

The idea to not allow same IP's to join the same game is a pretty good one, for public games. For private games, there should be no restriction. Because maybe, at a LAN party, someone wants to play some Speed Diplomacy with a bunch of people there, or like at a school lab.
aoe3rules (949 D)
19 Apr 07 UTC
yeah, there should be private, unscored games with no IP restrictions. and the idea to give less points to people who win with the same people is good.

I work on a laptop all day, and like to play my turns in Diplomacy in between working accounts. But because I don't have an office, I'm always playing in a different place; sometimes at home, sometimes at a local restaurant, sometimes at a bookstore--just wherever I can get free wifi. IP restrictions would severely hurt me, even though I have never made an 'auto-alliance' with anyone. I would highly dislike any system in place which took IPs into account.
drzli (1114 D)
19 Apr 07 UTC
the system where you can't play in the same game with accounts who share the same IP doesn't hurt you a bit Eric
EricHerboso (836 D)

It does if I wish to play against someone who happens to also go online in the same city from a Panera, as well.

kestasjk (64 DMod(P))

Some ISPs make entire cities share the same IP using NAT
drzli (1114 D)
19 Apr 07 UTC
I believe you are wrong about that. As a matter of fact, I'm sure you are wrong since I work in the IT sector. One ip per organization/cafe/university is valid, but entire city? No can do. If you happen to be in the same cafe at the same time with the person you don't know who is playing phpdiplomacy on this site, you may have problems. I hope you can see that this won't happen very often, in fact it may never happen in your life.
Never in my carrer have I heard or seen that ISPs use SINGLE IP to cover entire city area. C'mon, I live in Serbia which is so far away from anything modern happening in the world but we still have multiple IP adresses in all of our hotspots in all of our cities.
dangermouse (5551 D)
19 Apr 07 UTC
Perhaps I'm confused about what you want drzli.

Are you only saying you want to prevent two players with the same IP from being in the same game AT THE SAME TIME? I don't have any problems with that, but it seems almost a waste of time to prevent it.

Or, you're saying once a player signs into a game from a specific IP then you want to ban any other country IN THAT GAME from using the same IP. This 2nd option seems more likely and I agree it would cut down on cheating, but I suspect it would be a bear to manage and a pain in the ass for players like aoe3rules who play with groups of friends from school.

this is a disappointment to me if a one account per IP will be enforced my brother and I just started playing and we are in the same house on the same computer.....we never plan on joining the same game and allying but if need be im sure we can play on the same account
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
19 Apr 07 UTC
There is *not* going to be a one account per IP rule, it's a sloppy way of dealing with the problem, and it can easily be worked around anyway

drzli: Google "Fastweb NAT", for an example of a MAN that uses common gateways

I must say it is tempting when you're in a delicately balanced game, and someone with enough firepower to make your life difficult goes into civil disorder... to, you know, set up a new account just to take control of them... as an insurance policy!

I'm not advocating it, just saying it's crossed my mind in that situation!
aoe3rules (949 D)
20 Apr 07 UTC
still not enough to justify it.
drzli (1114 D)
20 Apr 07 UTC
@ dangermouse - just prevent two accounts with the same IP from being in a same game at the same time. It's at least one step to eliminating cheaters from the game. Hope I clarified what I wanted...
Fastweb's problems are a textbook example of a screwed net without any control. What can I say, Blame their admins.
EricHerboso (836 D)

@ drzli: My mother's IP is '216.231.162.9'. I give this out freely, because the same IP is shared with HUNDREDS of people in the same city as her who use the same crappy web hosting service. The restaurant I am in right now, Panera Bread, gives out free wifi access. But my IP right now is exactly the same as the IP from EVERY other Panera restaurant in this city. They all use a shared IP.

I don't work in programming stuff, and I don't understand much about it. But I do know that any time I have had to deal with sites that restrict IP addresses, I always have a problem using the site.

Civil Disorder
From what I understand, the scoring system will work off the games you've finished (and possibly what you're still in). However, since players take over games in CD, it will not say how many times you went CD. This could simply be counted with a figure, but if so, I was just wondering what people thought about running the score in a field, so it can count this. This would catch people who go CD to get out of problems. However, this would need to be carefully done, because I was doing rather well in a few games, like below, where I had 14 SC's or something around that, then fell into CD.
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=560
Also, a slight note on the anti-multi front: there should be a section checking for players who take over CDs. Otherwise, people could you "substitute" a second account in for their good one, keeping stats high.

Fast game for obsessives
"It's the waiting I can't stand!"

There must be other players, like myself, who spend most of their lives within easy reach of a computer, and consequently find themselves checking the site for updates several times a day, bemoaning those little red crosses that hold everyone up.

Please, make yourself known to me in this thread, when I get 7 names I'll set up a fast game just for us. Hopefully I can find other like-minded people determined that a turn should last no longer than 8 hours maximum (given that we all have to sleep!) and assuming we're not in opposing time zones, most turns being dealt with in less than 2 hours. Including thinking time!
