I narrowly miss qualifying with the rank of #601 on heads up ELO. But if some quirk leads to needing a sub or to fill an extra position, I'm in.
By the way... for those of you who love heads up games and also play on vdip, there is a perpetual 1v1 ladder tournament over there with rules that make it a lot of fun. Defenders higher in the ladder pick the board, and both reciprocal games are played. If a tie happens, the challenger picks the board and a pair of games is repeated. With the variety of boards available there, it is a lot of fun with a lot of variety. The challenge / board selection approach is a very nice way of handling unbalanced boards. As defender, you can pick a less balanced board making it more certain that you'll retain your spot after the first pairing in the game, but the rematch component means that doing this turns over second choice to your challenger. That's a pretty big incentive to not pick unbalanced boards and to pick boards that you think you can do better on than 1-1 because there are a lot of boards available. I happen to love, and thus to have become an unintentional specialist in, the Empire1v1 board (American map as here, with two civil war powers.) I'm a big favorite on that board against many players with generally higher skills just through lots of time on the board, so people I challenge have that incentive to try to actually beat me on the board that they pick when I challenge them, etc.
Fun times. Maybe next year I'll qualify for this one. It seems fantastic and I've been boning FxA, so my ELO should rise over the next year.
