Maybe I've watched too many seasons of 24, but I would expect a passenger plane to be shot down if it was known to be terrorist controlled and possibly packed with explosives.

This might be convincing IF it were true. For those not familiar with the geography of the mid-Atlantic region of the United States, the distance between northeastern Somerset County and the White House is well over 100 miles. It's not as if the plane crashed somewhere in the DC suburbs.

This is just silliness. The American public at large would have hailed the fighter pilots as heroes and schoolchildren would be learning their names from kindergarten right on up (okay, maybe I exaggerate; they might wait till 2nd grade to insert that into the curriculum). That's just how we do things in this country. The idea that we can't stomach the idea of a fighter jet having shot down the plane is remarkably lacking in insight.
