I'm a sci-fi writer trying to get published through traditional methods. Have a couple of pieces I'd love to get some fresh eyes on and can help with editing other peoples' stuff. Would prefer an off-site gathering location, find this place a bit hard to follow

PE - honestly, I'd never used google docs before....I just clicked through a link, saw a doc, and started hitting delete, search/replace, etc...heh heh....I had no idea what was happening...heh heh....

That being said, I have never used it for purposed of assigning rights, setting up groups, etc. It's really more about how to properly manage various user comments and set up groups, etc, than it is about how to type on a screen, if you know what I mean.

I abhor the idea of chaotic disorganization, and feel without proper order this thing will not work well.

Chariman -- How far have you gotten in the "traditional publishing" method? Do you have an editor? An agent?

I'm very interested to learn about anything you have experienced. Frankly, I fear traditional publishing for a variety of reasons, but first and foremost because it seems more based upon luck than upon talent.

Chariman -- Also, we will do off-site, starting at Google docs --- but if you have any ideas about a pre-existing place where we can create a private group, post docs, comment on others' docs, etc, please feel free to offer any suggestions.

In the past I've used Writer's Cafe. It lets you do private groups and if I recall the comment system is pretty robust and lets you request certain people review your work, or invite a whole group.

I have set up a Google Group. If you would like and invite to this group - please PM me your email.

I believe we can use the Group as the hub, and keep it out of the choas that is the forum

Orrrr....Damian has just made an alternate suggestion. But it's late, I'm tired, I'll look into Writer's Cafe tomorrow. (I am vaguely aware of it.) Assuming it's free, I have no problem doing that, as long as it support the collaborative structure we seek, etc.

Anyone else that wishes to explore this option and provide feedback, please do!

It was free when I signed up, many years ago. I've dug up my old password and have gone poking around the site. It looks like a group gets a forum, where they can discuss things. A place to put there writing and full access to the review system. I've made a sample group so I can get a feel for it. But I probably won't play with it anymore tonight.

At first glance I think it would be way easier to use than a google doc hub.

I've created a group at Writer's Cafe and posted a micro-short. I think damian's suggestion of this site might be good.

I'm not sure if I can send out invites to the group unless you are a member of Writer's Cafe first.

By the way, I'm on there as "Emrick Fyste" which is a pen name I created...it's not the real me, lest you think you found out who the real krellin is. :P

that's me. Yep. I made a groups to play with, with the intention of deleting it once I know the features we wanted were there. I'll join yours shortly. And maybe throw up the first page or so of an as of yet unfinished short story.

I think I will definitely throw up unfinished stories, particularly if I am stuck on something and seeking help with my direction -- I think that is the sort of thing this will be perfect for, actually. I have a story I wrote - even threw up some of it in webdip a year or so ago - that is unfinished becuase I got stuck at the end and am just totally unsure how to finish it

Assuming that we want to help each other out, and/or offer others help, does anyone have suggestions on how they would like to see things work.

For example, I have a quick story up, but it's more of a "for fun" item, as opposed to something I'm working on. But when I do put up more serious work and am seeking review - should I just throw it up and cross my fingers and hope? Should we come here and ask for vontunteers? Throw up a forum post there asking for volunteers?

How would you guys like to see this work?

In the case where we have multiple people putting up writing, it could become overwhelming for everyone to review everything - so maybe we'll want to set up some sort of rotation, so that each person get's review input from various people at different times? Or we can partner up...or...or just play it by ear as we go?

Thoughts?

I'm not at the computer with my writing files, but I could toss up the first 30 or so pages of a novel idea I spent most of the last academic semester on. I'll also toss up a couple of the shorts that I was most happy with over the last year and see what you guys think I can do to improve them.

I don't have a lot written right now, but I'll post as it comes.

All current requests approved -- does anyone here have access to the "Approve" tab in the Writer's Group? I don't see a way to assign "owner" type roles to other people, and I would very much like to.
