They can't seem to focus on important issues... instead focusing on things like arbitrary dress code violations and dumb discussions like whether or not history is worth learning about. I guess they think it's not their job to stop drug use or work with kids on their academics. Maybe sex in middle school isn't a problem to them. What gives?

Hypocrisy
Hypocrisy, I think, is one of the worst human traits, because it violates the rules of rhetoric and deceives both the hypocrite and their listener, obstructing reason and acceptance in the way of subversion and blind authority.

Masters Interest
This is just a thread to judge if there is enough interest in the community to start another round of the Masters. Note that this tourney does take more than 40 players to start, and will take 6-8 months to complete. I'm gonna try to keep this to top 200 GR, due to complaints about the quality of the last round.

No Draws? Why would it not be credit for the portion of the 7 ways earned x2? 14 for a solo, 7 for a 2-way, 4.67 for 3-way, 3.5 for a 4-way, etc.? Use a higher multiple or square it if you wish to give greater weight to a solo, but It does the game no justice to give equally no credit to being eliminated and participating in a three way draw.

Also, we are only going to play 7 rounds and each power once, right? If the consensus is 48 hour turns, what will be the schedule of launching new games? three to begin, then two more each two weeks or so? I have yet to play as long a time -- it must take a month to get to 1903...

I'm quite excited to see how solos only plays out. Speaking as an ashamedly cautious player, the objective often isn't to play for the draw but rather to stop the solo. I have my doubts whether or not this format will inspire a more aggressive attitude but I have my doubts.

At any rate, it's novel and should be fun.

I'm excited about no draws as well. But i don't see how anyone scores. There should be 5 or less solos for the 48 or 49 games.
No points for draws. That's how it is, and how this tournament shall always be. TheWizard won last year's tournament, with Dejan0707 in 2nd and TheHangedMan in 3rd. I'll be creating a prize for 4th place this year as well. As for previous winners, I don't know. Its meant to incentivize people to keep playing until a solo happens, and it certainly worked in my experience (most of my draws were accidental, since the draw vote became a diplomatic tool). Games will launch every month or so.
And to put it in perspective, there were 15 solos in the last Masters, which had 56 games played. That's more than a quarter of games ending in a solo.

Why play without draws? Playing without draws doesn't judge how good of a diplomat you are, nor how good an overall player you are. It judges how good you are at taking everything, which only happens in a small portion of games. 15 out of 56 last year... if you'd included draws, would the results have been different? Would they have been closer at least?
ghug (5068 D(B))

It's not playing without draws bo, it's just not incentivizing boring planned three ways like most important full press games do. The value in a draw is that nobody else gets the solo, which is all the value in the draw should be.
Yeah MM - I mean, I suppose I could set up all the games then leave them, but the way it was done last time was each "group leader" would set up their rounds (at request of the TD), email the password and link to the TD, who would in turn email it out to the rest of the players. I'll put down MM, Yonni, and sly as leaders.

and bo - that's just how it is. You can only win in diplomacy by soloing - there are no shared victories. And it may have been closer, but the results wouldn't have changed. TheWizard, Dejan, and THM spanked the rest of the competition soundly.
And I believe in voting we settled on 48 hour phases. And due to difficulties regarding setting up the 42 player scheme, we'll be going with the 49....for now. I'll give it one last crack tonight and tomorrow to see if I can manually fix it.

That's reasonable, but that's also an unnecessary alteration of something that really isn't an issue. Games will just go on until 1946 because three way draws stab and stalemate and back off and ally and stab and stalemate again. The cycle continues. Add some kind of rule that says stalemates are the end of a game and then playing without a score on draws is fine, but that'll just go on forever if you only play for solos.
ghug (5068 D(B))
03 Feb 13 UTC
I can set up games.
bo - when players start talking about the draw in 1905-6, its an issue. As I said, most of my games went on into the 1920s/1930s and I loved every second of them. It is exactly as you describe - stab, stalemate, back off, try again. But doing that is incredible fun.

Suit yourself. Did players draw because they got bored of that game or because someone threw? If only 15 of 56 ended in solos, how many of these games simply go to waste?
bo - its just how the tournament was designed, and I won't be changing that. I'm already deviating enough by allowing it to go to 48hr phases and considering 42 player settings. The other games do not contribute to the score of the tournament, if that's what you're referring to. But by drawing, players can prevent *another* player from scoring, which is just as important.

WHAT?!?!

"most of my games went on into the 1920s/1930s"

With 48 hour phases, those games had to take at least six months each, and that's with no pauses... I'm going to have to seriously rethink this, I'd *much* prefer to play three games that go to 1910 than one game that goes to 1930, and playing *seven* games that go to 1930 would... not be something I'd knowingly seek out... No offense...
None taken MM - but please don't judge the tournament by my experience. My games were also, I believe the *only* ones to stretch into the 1920s/1930s. Maybe one other got into the 20s. I just have a knack for extending games (in another one currently that's in 1921 and will easily go 5 more years) I think people just love my charm so much that they don't want the game to end....

I don't recall the games I played in the last tournament being unusually long. I do recall a single player being responsible for a good third of the tournament's solos by being the most inept idiot possible and handing them to people on a plate.

If we're going to play insanely long games, we are going to need to be extremely flexible on pauses. I know two or three months into the future right now. I can't prearrange anything that I don't know exists yet...
bo - round 7 is going to be slated to start end of may/beginning of june.

2 rounds a month: february -1&2, march - 3&4, april - 5&6, may - 7

Brand new stupid question of the day
I've been looking back on some of my previous games and I see that there are several people who I've played with that have a big red x next to their names. Is it safe to assume that these players were banned for something? Or am I completely wrong on this?

Austria issue
I have searched the forum for similar topic, haven't found any. However if the issue was somewhere discussed just delete the thread.

Playing Austria is very difficult in most of the cases. Moreover, players usually tend to play a pattern of "lets kill Austria first." Although you may say it is a natural fate of nations that some are stronger other are weaker, personally I think that in the game Austria should have a more equal chances (...)
