Hurricane Irma Category 5
Irma is the largest Atlantic Basin hurricane in NHS history.

All of which I said long ago in this thread. The high affected its track, which is all that the above paragraph of pseudo-intelligence actually says, contrary to your original statement that the high pressure system is what made Irma powerful.

Are you done yet?
Zach0805 (100 D)
11 Sep 17 UTC
Nope
I love hurricanes and awe at their strength, you can't beat me Bo I know everything. I said the High because that was the primary reason. I listed all the secondary reasons with comparable Hurricanes in ghe bigger one because you forced me to.

Lmao what
Ogion (3882 D)
11 Sep 17 UTC
Yeah, I guess that doesn't surprise me Bo. Sad to say, knowing some things does not translate into understanding science.

Notice, all of zach's storms are pretty recent. Which is telling, frankly.
Ogion (3882 D)
11 Sep 17 UTC
And Irma was the strongest east of the Leewards ever recorded, but who is counting?
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
11 Sep 17 UTC
Zach isn't wrong about categorizing storms, but he seems to have a hard on for high pressure systems that do little more than steer hurricanes. Yeah, the high pressure system's existence and strength kept Irma out of cold water and let it survive longer, but it followed a very typical track, northwest Africa to the Caribbean, and for some reason he thinks that other high pressure systems in the past haven't held firm and done the exact same thing with weaker hurricanes. I'm not exactly sure how to respond to that other than "lmao what" so I'm not going to.

Irma was the strongest hurricane east of the Leewards ever recorded but it is highly, highly unlikely that it is actually the strongest ever east of the Leewards. Our coverage out that direction is not new but we haven't had the technology, access, and accuracy that we do now in covering that area and further toward Africa that we do today for all that long, probably no longer than we have been able to accurately track hurricanes in the Pacific (since the mid 50s-early 60s). It was a beast but the only records that we know it broke are our records, not nature's records.

Examples of Hurricanes Cat 5 or within 10mph of Cat 5 east of the Antilles
David, 1979
Hugo, 1989
Luis, 1995
Edouard, 1996
Georges, 1998
Isabel, 2003
Igor, 2010
Irma, 2017

Not uncommon indeed, Irma was the strongest but Isabel is only slightly weaker and Hugo is just 1 small step behind those 2. David turned into a Cat 5 over the Antilles.
Ogion (3882 D)

And how about prior to 1970?
Ogion (3882 D)
11 Sep 17 UTC
Well, undoubtedly the strongest storms ever were during the Permian or something, so yes, that's true, but it is also not particularly relevant
Ogion (3882 D)
11 Sep 17 UTC
Oh, and I'm still waiting for your citations that show that increases in water temperatures have no impact on storm intensity, Zach.
brainbomb (290 D)

Hurricane Irma was the biggest storm in the Universe. It was stronger and larger than the storm on Jupiter even
KansasBoyd (25 DX)

So what is the "recorded history" of hurricanes?

Certainly not from the beginning of the planet and I would guess would fall into the range of being an extremely small timeframe compared with the overall age of the planet.
Zach0805 (100 D)
11 Sep 17 UTC
@Ogion
I said Climate Change has little to no effect on this Hurricane only, obviously Hurricanes are affected by Climate Change but single storms are not a result only trends.

If groups of hurricanes are affected by climate change but individual hurricanes are nof, does Dumbledore die?
Ogion (3882 D)
11 Sep 17 UTC
So, having water temperatures that are on the order two degrees warmer than preindustrial affects storms generally, but somehow that dynamic doesn't affect Irma?
Ogion (3882 D)

Ooh poor Dumbledore!
KansasBoyd (25 DX)

So I am taking it that none of the science experts know how long accurate information on hurricanes has been recorded?
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
11 Sep 17 UTC
I know perfectly well. That's why I don't simply trust the trends yet. The surrounding conditions during hurricane season for the past 40+ years are generally following the line of thought that says that hurricanes will become less frequent and stronger when they happen, though.

That doesn't answer my question, but thanks though.

http://science.sciencemag.org/content/309/5742/1844.full

We examined the number of tropical cyclones and cyclone days as well as tropical cyclone intensity over the past 35 years, in an environment of increasing sea surface temperature. A large increase was seen in the number and proportion of hurricanes reaching categories 4 and 5. The largest increase occurred in the North Pacific, Indian, and Southwest Pacific Oceans, and the smallest percentage increase occurred in the North Atlantic Ocean. These increases have taken place while the number of cyclones and cyclone days has decreased in all basins except the North Atlantic during the past decade.

Were you asking for a specific answer? The best and most reliable data has come since the mid-1950s when we finally began charting hurricanes in the Atlantic and Pacific and began tracking typhoons. The National Hurricane Center started issuing accurate watches and warnings in 1965. NOAA was founded in 1970 in no small part to help track and analyze these storms. Doppler radar has seen vast improvements since that era that allow us to analyze more data to a better degree of accuracy and the NOAA has taken on some fantastic projects to get more and more data on the largest storms, including the Hurricane Hunters planes, which have been around since the 1940s but have been massively impactful since the founding of the NOAA. Since 2013, they have been taking real time radar scans from their planes out over open ocean, which means that the best and most meaningful data in my opinion has come since 2013 (making this year a pretty big year that will be heavily analyzed for decades) and more meaningful data than what we have so far with regard to climate trends and storms will come out of the next few decades, but that doesn't mean that data going back through the founding of the National Hurricane Center isn't reliable.
