School Of War: Winter 2011 Semester
So, reading some random threads, I've noticed people sporadically bringing up the School of War series. I'm creating this thread to see if there is enough interest, maybe we can set up a new semester's worth of games after the winter holidays... share your thoughts, indicate your interest, or volunteer your veteran services below

what an awesome faculty. for your newer players playing in the game, it will be quite a great experience - make sure to ask your advisers questions - but also ask them WHY they are making suggestions they are making.

for the many more of you who can not be IN the game, remember that this SoW is just as much for you as it is for those IN the game - you can always ask questions in the game-thread once its created, and again - ask the professors WHY they concluded whatever it is they wrote... you can arguably learn even more than those who are in the game because you can see the bigger picture.

Thank you Dean wiggins for organizing this Semester, I'm looking forward to a few great games.
Ack. I never updated the list with my own name, so I haven't yet received a PM. Sorries. >_<

Hey Agent K, looks like we'll be playing again after all. ;-) Remember, we are here to help teach, not for a battle royale!

What about for the Grad game? pw told me I was down as an advisor for that one but I haven't heard anything else about it. I'm interested to see what these players do and to have the opportunity to discuss the game with them. It should be a learning experience for us all. Myself included. Maybe I'll learn how to play England and Turkey better. Especially England.

I'm definitely excited to be in a game. I'll make sure to enjoy it and to make the best out of it. Thanks peterwiggin for organizing!

It will be an honor to be a professor on this SoW. I don´t know if I fully qualify as a professor with my limited game experience, but I will do my best to fullfill this role.

Also, anyone that are not in the game could question the professors and ask further explanation on the analysys but from the experience I have with games with commentary threads and the other SoW games I would ask people to not ask on the game thread about future moves (this should be done only between the advisors and the students) and specially not post commentaries and suggestions as this can disrupt the game at some extent.

Seven of you submitted very good statements to me saying what you would contribute to the game and what you hoped to learn from it. Unfortunately, there was only space for five in the first game, but everybody not in the first game remains eligible for the second. Congratulations to these five players, who will join Draugnar and Agent K in our first undergrad game.

Once the game gets going there will be a new thread for commentary. Please let me or Babak start that thread of with a post outlining the guidelines for discussions.

Also, if you are playing in a game, you will obviously not be allowed to contribute to its discussion while the game is ongoing. However, it would be nice if the students and TAs could post End of Game statements to the discussion thread when their game is complete. I've found that, when it comes time to write an EoG statement, it will help if, throughout the game, you've made yourself some notes on what you think of the moves and the other powers and why you are saying and doing the things you are, and I encourage you all to keep such notes throughout your game.

Apologies to the Dean - I'm having real issues with various froms of communication. I'm still interested, and seem to be able to access games and the forum OK, but eveything else is shot.

Will we have to converse with our mentors via pm exclusively, or is email an acceptable form of communication too?
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Jan 11 UTC
What communication should the TAs do? Oh and the only person missing is a TA.
peterwiggin (15158 D)
08 Jan 11 UTC
You may communicate with your adviser using whatever method works for the two of you.
The TAs should play the game almost like any other game. If you can swing it, try to give some advice in-game. I understand that that can be difficult to do without really skewing the game, so I think it's more important that you keep track of your thoughts, impressions, and motivations throughout the game so that you can write a thorough EoG statement afterwards.

So, while we're waiting on Agent K, how will the Advisors be allotted advisees? Based on the power's they specified? I guess it all depends on what power's the TA's get... Where is Agent K? Seems to be awhile for this game to get off the ground and we're all eagerly awaiting the start! Any news?

My advisee can contact me any way they wish (when I know who they are, poor player!)

I am waiting for the game to fill before assigning advisers so that I can account for who has what power. I don't know where Agent K is . . . I have a sub lined up if he doesn't show in the next 21 hours though.

Ignoring the Franco-Prussian War are we?
I mean really it's Chapter One of the modern Franco-Prussian conflict that lead to WWI & WWII. It's also the only one that the Germans won. Alsace Loraine wasn't a big issue until the Germans took it in that war.

THIS Is Why I Am Disillusioned About Democracy As It Is
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Tucson_shooting
That's despicable. I don't care if you're a Red or a Blue or a Green or Libertarian or Communist or Facist, if you support gay marriage or not, abortion or not, if you like Obama or not, Palin or not--Plato, ultimately, was right, is right: either you have a dictatorship or a corrupted democracy. Pick your poison. Our political system, now, IS poisoned...and must be changed, this CANNOT HAPPEN...

Crazy Anglican, just curious....
Hey Crazy Anglican, does your grandmother go by the name: "Swedish Mountains"? My grandpa used to bang out this swedish girl near Chicago just after the Korean War. He said she spoke in a 1/2 swedish accent n was worlds of fun, in alll seriousness. Just askin.

How much effort do you put into thinking about your moves?
Ivo_Ivanov said recently that he usually plays around eight games a time. I find this amazing considering how well he does in his games.
The only games I have ever won, I have worked really hard at. I have set up positions using jDip and played through every scenario I can think of. But this is quite time consuming. Lately I have become very slack, indeed I might as well play live games. How hard do you try?

You would have two games (though 1 has 2 day phases so you would probably only have to enter I set of moves. The other has 24hr phases). Pretty straightforward games as well. Post if interested.

Seem to be having a bug ordering a convoy.
Hello,
I am ordering a convoy in a game. I fill in the first two boxes, and then try to fill in the third box (where to convoy from).
The browser seems to pause for a few long seconds, then I get a message saying that a script is having a problem. This happens on 4 different browsers that I've tried on 3 different operating systems.
Does anybody have the same problem? What should I do about this?
