He's Metagaming...
Would any of you guys be up for a 2 or 3 game variant where the purpose is to metagame? Has anyone played a game like this, and if so how well did it work out? I have no points at the moment, but in a week or so I should be able to host the games :)

Two Questions about the Forum that I couldn't find in the help
1) If you mute a thread, is there any way to unmute it?
2) At what point do your posts and Threads move to the link that you can click on from your profile? They seem to be several weeks old. Is it a page count thing? or a timing thing?

Presidential amnesty
Our beloved universal genius, Master of the Universe and president of the Czech Republic, Tunnelgramps Václav Klaus recently ordered an amnesty for 1/3 of all prisoners to celebrate 20 years since the dissolution of Czechoslovakia he so masterfully orchestrated. Another 500 pardons are in the pipes as well, gotta help the pals out before his time in the office runs out.

To the citizens of the United States of America from Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

In light of your failure in recent years to nominate competent candidates for President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately. (You should look up 'revocation' in the Oxford English Dictionary.)

Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths, and territories (except North Dakota, which she does not fancy).

Your new Prime Minister, David Cameron, will appoint a Governor for America without the need for further elections.

Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire may be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed.

To aid in the transition to a British Crown dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

-----------------------

1. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as 'colour,' 'favour,' 'labour' and 'neighbour.' Likewise, you will learn to spell 'doughnut' without skipping half the letters, and the suffix '-ize' will be replaced by the suffix '-ise.' Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. (look up 'vocabulary').

------------------------

2. Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as ''like' and 'you know' is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. There is no such thing as U.S. English. We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take into account the reinstated letter 'u'' and the elimination of '-ize.'

-------------------

3. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday.

-----------------

4. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers, or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you're not quite ready to be independent. Guns should only be used for shooting grouse. If you can't sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist, then you're not ready to shoot grouse.

----------------------

5. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. Although a permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

----------------------

6. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will start driving on the left side with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Both roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.

--------------------

7. The former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been calling gasoline) of roughly $10/US gallon. Get used to it.

-------------------

8. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with vinegar.

-------------------

9. The cold, tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as Lager. South African beer is also acceptable, as they are pound for pound the greatest sporting nation on earth and it can only be due to the beer. They are also part of the British Commonwealth - see what it did for them. American brands will be referred to as Near-Frozen Gnat's Urine, so that all can be sold without risk of further confusion.

---------------------

10. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors to play English characters. Watching Andie Macdowell attempt English dialect in Four Weddings and a Funeral was an experience akin to having one's ears removed with a cheese grater.

---------------------

11. You will cease playing American football. There is only one kind of proper football; you call it soccer. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which has some similarities to American football, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like a bunch of nancies).

---------------------

12. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the World Series for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.1% of you are aware there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. You will learn cricket, and we will let you face the South Africans first to take the sting out of their deliveries.

--------------------

13.. You must tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us mad.

-----------------

14. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all monies due (backdated to 1776).

---------------

15. Daily Tea Time begins promptly at 4 p.m. with proper cups, with saucers, and never mugs, with high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; plus strawberries (with cream) when in season.

God Save the Queen!

To the citizens of the fake UK in Nigee's brain,

We truly to appreciate your concern for our wellbeing. We are touched by your concern over our spelling of basic words. We also believe that, in the true American spirit, you are stupid, and we could care less about adding a "u" to color. It's still color. Nobody gives a fuck.

We would also like to tell you that we stopped reading the remainder of your letter due to your own incompetency (tl;dr, anyone?). We did, though, manage to read of your Daily Tea Time. I personally proposed a bill in order to forward this notion in Congress; it was unanimously rejected. As of 1773, British tea has been the subject of some of the most tyrannical points in human history, and as a result, we voted to, again, not give a fuck about what you want.

Once again, we appreciate your concern. We would like to send you this image to commemorate the occasion.

ulytau Socrates this is the highest form of humor (or humour, such as it is). I expect better from both of you - if you're actually upset by this you are EXACTLY the type of uptight American it was designed to poke fun at.

Nigee is a genius if he wrote this himself, and at worst has good taste for reposting.

I'm sorry to disappoint you Yellowjacket, truly. It's just besides my hatred for the monarchy which automatically put me on course to dislike the post, I can say with extreme confidence that many Brits do hold these opinions seriously and there is huge anti-american sentiment, and dare I say it xenophobia towards americans in the UK. To me this rids the post of its possible humour and makes it in poor taste, I could be wrong though (although, if I was, I still think funnier points could be made).

Nigee - as high of that as one who is right, and I do understand it, and the jokes, unfortunately British culture is something I'm far too accustomed with. And Octavious before you dismiss my point as being 'funny', I know what I'm talking about in this regard.

No, Soc, I think you'll find I dismissed your point before you claimed you knew what you were talking about. Nobody in the UK takes those views seriously.

Plenty of Brits have a poor view of Yanks, though. Most of them are left wingers. Almost all Brits will mock Americans at some point.
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))
03 Jan 13 UTC
"Brits do hold these opinions seriously and there is huge anti-american sentiment, and dare I say it xenophobia towards americans in the UK" (yeah right)

Sometimes we find some Americans strange when they come out with some weird shit, like what you just said. Brits aren't xenophobic but that doesn't mean they won't take the piss out of you, there is a difference. Don't confuse cultural differences with xenophobia, it might have been just you they didn't like :-)

SD, whoever else... Brits make fun of Americans. Big deal. Americans make fun of Brits all the time. That's kind of normal...
Octavious (2701 D)
03 Jan 13 UTC
Only one point??? Since when has Britain been in favour of the metric system (point 6) and who do you know who actually has tea at 4pm (point 15)? Only Americans actually assoiciate these things with Britain which makes me inclined to believe that this "joke" was in fact first penned by a Yank.
Nigee, I've lived in the UK most of my life, and never hear anyone say anything bad to me because of my place of birth. I hear comments however often, and many people do, stupid though it is, in their anti american rants (which is very common, brits are very anti american), and it includes things like color, american football etc. Superficial though these things are it is indicative of the wider anti-us sentiment that runs deep in the UK. I'm not saying that they will go beat up american's by virtue of being american, but you don't need to go beating up blacks or consistently use racial slurs to be a racist.

The sciences
A recent post by dubmdell on the beauty of science struck me as being rather eloquent. It paused me to stop and think what the relative proportion of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) students were across our various countries. In the UK in 2010, for example, there were 12,000 psychology and 10,000 history graduates. Chemistry and physics had 2,400 and 2,200 respectively.

I am from Europe, so I don't know much about American politics. I always thought that the GOP is for the hard working people. But it seems more and more that they just defend the rich. Sounds stupid to me, is a rather sure way to loose votes.

Trigger Laws
These are laws which do nothing unless certain conditions are first met.

So some (US) states will automatically ban abortion if Roe V Wade is overturned; or automatically ban human cloning if it becomes possible to achieve; however i really like the following rule: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Popular_Vote_Interstate_Compact

The Greatest (Love) Story Ever Told?
It's not "Romeo and Juliet"...surely we all agree?
It's not "La Boheme," however much I love that opera.
It's not "Les Miserables" (at least not the musical/film version, two lines and BAM! instant, undying love between Marius and Cosette...lol!)
So...what is it--triumphant, comedic or tragic, as we approach the romance of New Years', what IS The Greatest Love Story Ever Told?
