During our friendly conversation, I asked their little girl what she wanted to be when she grows up. She said she wanted to be President some day. Both of her parents, liberal Democrats, were standing there, so I asked her, "If you were President what would
be the first thing you would do?" She replied... "I'd give food and houses to all the homeless people." Her parents beamed with pride! "Wow...what a worthy goal!" I said. "But you don't have to wait until you're President to do that!" I told her. "What do you mean?" she replied. So I told her, "You can come over to my house and mow the lawn, pull weeds, and trim my hedge, and I'll pay you $50. Then you can go over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out and give him the $50 to use toward food and a new house." She thought that over for a few seconds, then she looked me straight in the eye and asked, "Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?" I said, "Welcome to the Republican Party." Her parents aren't speaking to me anymore.

I obviously disagree with the idea there...

But +1 for a funny story (oh, Putin's gonna get on my case again...but I'm just +1ing because it's a funny story, Putin, I don't agree with the--never mind, you've already read I've +1'd and declared me something of a blood traitor the the sacred brotherhood that is the Democratic Party...damn, I'm going to have to turn in my members-only jacket now!)

It was a slur directed at someone who slurred themselves the same way. I would never use that phrase outside of a joke between a "friend" who is of Jewish descent and myself. Hell, I'd give shit to anyone who used that as a real slur. Likewise, I could call my friend gary an assfucker, but wouldn't dream of referring to homosexual men in a regular conversation not between him and I that way and would kick someone's ass for using it as an actual slur.

He's only anti-Semitic in the truest sense of the word if he hates on Arabs and Amharic and Tigrinyas. Hebrew, that false synonym of Semitic and whose progenitor's ancestor is the term's namesake, is the only the fourth most spoken Semitic language in the world and far from the most persecuted. I think that title goes to one of the thousands of extinct ethnic groups. And Jews are far from endangered. And did I mention the religion is thriving? Better than Zoroastrianism I hear. And hey, if anyone has been persecuted! Well, you know. This is by no means an endorsement of racism, but rather trying to draw out that playing the card at every turn doesn't make it so. When I joke with my Egyptian friend that she can't eat right now and she jokes with me that my English is bad, that is us joking around. Draugnar and obiwan were doing the same (from my skimmed reading of this thread). Lay off, Putin.

Oh, sorry Putin, but I disagree with anyone who makes a broad term apply specifically to their suffering. And at the time, Arabs were hated pretty well too, so I don't see the original intent as being that far off base. At any rate, I am an indo-European, as I expect you are, and Jews and Arabs and et al are Semites. If you know a better way to categorize ethnicity and race (since there is no genetic basis for these categories), then by all means propose one. The issue is only compounded with Jews because you can be Jewish by religion and not by heritage. Again, though, being anti-Semitic towards someone who is Jewish in religion only is a far cry from what the word means.

The other problem with counting (some) Arabs in particular out of "anti-Semitic" is that, according to Jewish mytho-history, the Jews are related to (some) Arabs by their father Abraham, and if you go back a few more generations, you find that Abraham was part of Shem's lineage, Shem, the namesake of Semite. Even on a mytho-historical level, "anti-Semitic" fails to function in a narrow band.

Usually I figure you to be inflammatory and take it as such, but that one goes a bit far.

I am NOT a self-hating Jew just because I'm fine with someone telling a Jew Joke...

It means I'm a damned human being with a sense of humor about myself--try getting one, they're really quite a bit better than standing ona pedestal all day.

Oh, you're talking about antisemitism! The hyphenated form, where I come from, is distinct from the unhyphenated form. (though I still think the unhyphenated form is too narrow, I appreciate that it isn't understood nor meant to be understood more broadly like the hyphenated form.)

"Unread Messages" in gunboat games

Trying not to be specific, but I'm in an ongoing gunboat game where there was a person running multiple accounts. Thus, when they were removed, the game got an automated message (as always happens in such cases).

However, since it's a gunboat game, I can't see the message to read it. And thus can't get rid of the "New Message" icon. Help?

Will your life change by the man who's elected?

Congress hasn't done much in the last eight (?) years due to division of control. The president either can't do much without a congress or just goes over congress to get stuff done. The better litmus test in recent years of what four years will bring is which party controls the senate and house. So honestly, will your life change by the man who's elected? Why or why not?
