I was thinking obsidian for the one made of the coke bottle. It's cheaper and has an interesting look.

They're reasonably cheap, super convenient to buy, and they look good.

If you think of other things that would work well, I'd be happy to try it out.

If Minecraft has taught me anything, it's there's nothing convenient about using obsidian.

lol that's probably true, but it looks so pretty. I'd look at lesser gemstone personally. Jade, Rose Quartz, even regular quartz. Depending on what the lamp looked liked.

But seriously, obsidian would look super cool, but most pieces I've seen are much too large for a bottle neck. They may come smaller, but I doubt they'll be less expensive.

I know they come smaller since you can use them in beading. I'd have to look but wholesale prices aren't normally to bad. Then again I normally do beading stuff not chunks, which may be different prices.

If you know of a good site that I can buy wholesale rocks, I'll certainly look into it. I try to add something different to each lamp I make.

Cut the bottom off the jar at the seam, fill it, then reseal it with CA. when cut at the seam, the cut will never be visible.

Do you have experience working with glass?

I'll look about. I get lucky with gem shows about every month or 2 (love living near 2 big cities) and prices tend to be cheaper there. About how much do you use in each bottle. Also, it will be more expensive the aquarium rocks. No way around it.

P.S. Have you thought about selling these at all for some extra money. A place like Etsy would be great for it (sorry can't remember if you've answered this in the last thread and to lazy to go look it up).

Some. Mostly mirror and picture frame and some beveled glass for cabinetry.

I have, but I'm hesitant. Now, I can make them whenever I feel like it and design them specifically for someone, which makes it a lot of fun. I feel it will become more of a 2nd job and less of a fun hobby if I start selling them.

I'll look into cutting the bottoms off, but I suspect it will be rather tricky. Also, I don't like the idea of having to glue it back together. Seems like the whole thing would be a lot less stable afterwards.

Abge - How do you run the cord? Out the back side?

I drill a hole through the bottom-back of the bottle.

Do it from the inside bottom just inside the "foot" where the bottle sits on the table.

I can understand about not wanting to sell them on some place like etsy. SOme of the fun of making stuff is just because able to do it whenever you want versus having to get it done.
