PW Gunboat 5 Point Challenges
Would anyone like to join me for some passworded 5 D gunboat games? I'd like to get as many people involved as possible for some fun gunboat games not orientated on points but that are still good quality. Add your name to the list if you're interested please. All games will be anonymous and 25 hour phase length, thank you.

Why does Germany go to Sweden in Fall '01 so often?
I can understand moving to Denmark in spring to keep the threat alive as diplomatic leverage, but by moving to Sweden right away, Germany angers Russia. Germany's usually going to be able to take Sweden away when he chooses anyway if Russia doesn't open strong to Scandinavia, so why are people so eager to make an enemy right off the bat?

Vaftrudner's statistics
Hello all!

kestas has been kind enough to give me a dump of the database with all personal details removed, but all game data is intact. This means that I can produce statistics of any kind, and you can request what you'd like to see here. Ask me for anything, and I'll see if I can make it happen!

To start it off, here are some statistics randomly chosen by me. To clarify my terms, I say "Standard" to refer to the standard map, "Regular" to refer to regular press.

Games that have been played on webDip up to April 8, when the database dump was produced:

Standard games: 27308
World games: 677
Mediterranean games: 3885

The standard games have had these press rules:

Regular: 21587
Gunboats: 4998
Public press: 723

Of regular games:

Won: 14183
Drawn: 7404

PPSC: 19070
WTA: 2517

WTA won: 1126
WTA drawn: 1391

In standard games with regular press:

Won by England: 1839 12.97%
Won by France: 2262 15.95%
Won by Italy: 1292 9.11%
Won by Germany: 1903 13.42%
Won by Austria: 1609 11.34%
Won by Turkey: 2573 18.14%
Won by Russia: 2705 19.07%

In standard game with no press:

Won by England: 327 10.81%
Won by France: 539 17.82%
Won by Italy: 342 11.31%
Won by Germany: 490 16.20%
Won by Austria: 273 9.02%
Won by Turkey: 713 23.57%
Won by Russia: 341 11.27%

I want to see myself a lot higher than about 3,000th, this must be possible, you can do anything with statistics :-)
What's the point of the data if you don't know who the players are ???
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
15 Apr 12 UTC
I can see who players are, what I meant by personal data is that I can't see user e-mails, passwords, moderator notes, etc. I can customise searches for specific players, pot sizes, dates, pretty much anything.
rokakoma (19138 D)

Here is my inquery:

Percentage distribution of winning countries. How many wins/draw with france, england, etc ... as percentage of all games. You can make it detailed by game type, like gunboat, etc.

The same for losses, like how many times does italy, austria lose.

the same for acient mediterranean.

For players:
List of players with most "won games" percentage, above at least 50 games, top 50 players.

For now, I'm not curious in anything else :)

Percentages of Wins+Draws of Nations in full/public/no press WTA games would be interesting.

A split between press and non-press games seems to make sense as there are slightly different skills and the stats show very different results by country with non-press games

It's funny that you should be the first to ask rokakoma, and embarassing that I completely forgot to thank you in the OP. You introduced me to SQL and helped me out. And right at this moment, there is a mail waiting for you with questions :D Thank you.

Nicely done, sir! What I would quite like to see is how pot size impacts regular games. I've long been of the belief that cheap, non passworded games (5-15 D, say) are of better quality (and harder to win) than the more expesive non passworded games (50-100 D).

If you can get the win %s compared between cheap and expensive games that would be great :)
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
15 Apr 12 UTC
Mr A, I've asked kestas if I can share the database, and I'm waiting for a reply. I'd ask anyone to please don't bog him down with requests until he's answered.

I'll get to work on your requests now.

Fascinating stuff, Vaft. I'm interested in the distribution of wins for live games specifically; I would imagine there would be a change of some kind.

I'd like to see win percentages per country for the top 50 or 100 people on the ghost rankings. I'm curious to see if the averages stay the same or if the most skilled players are dominate as a few particular countries. No worries if that's too much of a pain to put together though.

I'd like to see percentage of opening moves for all regular press standard games (broken down by country) vs percentage of opening moves for that set of game restricted to the games which the country actually won.

And the same comparison in gunboats...

Awesome development. If it is possible, posting the raw data with personal info etc. in a commonly accessible place would certainly produce some interesting results as all the nerds here put their collective efforts into an extensive statistical analysis.

Obviously I have no idea about how difficult (or how inclined the powers of be are) to do so but it'd be cool.
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
15 Apr 12 UTC
I'm going to collect requests in a Google spreadsheet instead of my initial moronic plan to just publish stuff in the thread where no one can find it. I keep forgetting posts on this forum can't be edited. I'll remake the thread with a permalink to the spreadsheet once I've filled it a bit and let this one die. You can still request stuff though!
fiedler (1293 D)
16 Apr 12 UTC
Good for u vaft! If it's not too much of a breach of privacy, it would be interesting to do a straight analysis of the top 10 ghost players. E.g. What types of games they play, phase length etc., frequency and quantity of comms between powers and how that relates to game outcome.

Also, maybe an analysis of how holding a certain number of scs in say 1905, relates to how many scs you hold in 1910, for each nation.

Lots of work to do, allez! ;P
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
16 Apr 12 UTC
fiedler, that sounds fun and very advanced :D I'm actually completely new to SQL, rokakoma has given me lessons over the last two days and it's been invaluable. I also started programming php today, since I realised that doing stuff manually means having to do it again when a new dump comes. Thankfully, since I'm a nerd, I had an apache server already configured and running that I installed because "This might be useful one day!" And I have experience in other languages, so php wasn't hard to learn.

Here's an early prototype of the monster of a Google spreadsheet me and my php are working on:

http://tinyurl.com/webdipstats

It already has some good data, but there are a few things I want to clarify before I start the new, more official thread. I'm still taking suggestions though, I'm saving them all.

"In standard game with no press:
Won by Turkey: 713 23.57%
Won by Russia: 341 11.27%"

Turkey is a bitch and any A/I not playing the Key Lepanto is a Swedish hurra. ;)

No, I'm not buttsore from gunboats as Russia where I cannot open north /and/ survive. Gods!
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
16 Apr 12 UTC
dubmdell, I refer to the spreadsheet above, I forgot to add in the post that those win percentages were collected only from games with wins, they might look misleading. Yet another reason to bury this thread later :D
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
16 Apr 12 UTC
Theres still some major issues with simply using the raw data from the dump. Ive found that over 10% of all games have CDs within the first year, multiaccounters or metagamers, resigns, players winning with fewer than 18 centers, 0 center draws and survivals, and a slew

of other issues that throw the data off from true values.

i suppose the ultimate question is how you deal with these issues to ensure accurate values?
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
16 Apr 12 UTC
Tru Ninja, I've thought of and been suggested a lot of ways to refine the data and remove bad data. The first step for me though is simply getting the hang of it and writing some good code for all the data, before I get more detailed.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
16 Apr 12 UTC
Not misleading... The numbers for %wins add up to 100% - so it is good to note the average 1/7 should be 14.2%

I like how Austria and italy swap 9&11 between press and nonpress.
Austria getting to talk hurts italy.

The other big one is russia loses a massive 8%, giving turkey england and germany small bumps (and frances loses out to the G and E gains)

I guess it goes to show turkey does better without russia and italy does better without austria!
orathaic (1009 D(B))
16 Apr 12 UTC
I'd like to see a similar contrast between the win ratios for high stakes vs low stakes games

And passworded vs unpassworded games
Yonni (136 D(S))
16 Apr 12 UTC
I'm not sure how detailed the data is that you're getting but lately people have been talking about 'draws being more common than they used to be.' (Ya know? Back in the good ol' days we used to play some real gunslinging diplomacy).
Some stats to substantiate that claim would be cool.
Vaftrudner (2533 D)
16 Apr 12 UTC
Does anyone want to contribute, by the way? This was originally as much for me as for the community, I wanted to learn more about SQL and start polishing my old programming skills, as well as producing statistics. But the data I produce is free for all to use with or without attribution, and if anyone has ideas to add, I'll give them edit rights for the spreadsheet. I'm sure the community can produce a lot more useful data than me on my own. I can't share the raw data itself though because kestas has not replied if it's OK yet.

PM me if you want to contribute, and what ideas you have. I'd like to try to keep the number low though, and all ideas run by me first, because I don't want a chaotic clusterfuck of data.
