If it's any good, it would be able to accurately predict how its performers would fare against others depending on their skill levels. It does not do that. GR does to a much better extent.
You can look at it from a mathematical point of view and based on observations. There is no statistical indication that it does anything whatsoever, and the creator himself has yet to provide any analysis analyzing its worth. If he ever wants to validate his system, I would be more than happy to check his analysis. Based on observations, please do not tell me that someone with a good "carnivore" score would do better than a highly ranked GR player. We would only be able to compare how good of a predictor a carnivore score is by looking at all the games that each player would do over an extended period of time, meaning to see if he/she would do well against others of similar skills and against those are more experienced. If only we have a way of doing that... Oh right, that's what GR does.

Damn, I'm cranky. And please don't bother replying about how critical I am and blah blah blah. If you want to discuss its merits, fine. If it's a good predictor, then it has to be a mathematical model. If it's a mathematical model, then provide the evidence. Plain and simple.

It's definitely a flawed system. Personally I think that the best ability metric is win % in full-press, classic, non-live WTA games as France, but that's just me.

Sometimes it's good to just call a duck a duck. I don't think we have to curse at each other, but it doesn't always work to beat around the bush.

Here's a new ranking system: count the number of letters you have in your handler's name, and the higher it is, the better Diplomacy player you are. More flawed, less flawed?

Most definitely more flawed, carnivore can provide a general metric. People who suck will generally do worse in games; it's just less effective than things like GR.

I would not disagree ghug, but then don't you just have to look at win/draw ratio? My gut instinct says that win/draw ratio would be a better performance predictor.

you're a douchebag zultar. just proving it yet again. they don't give out nobel prizes for the hopes someone will do something great. oh wait, i forgot about obama. nevertheless, a ranking doesn't have to have any use whatsoever in prediction. people can rank however they want. and what kind of prediction are we talking about? obviously with impartial information you can't know how well the newcomers will do in the future, so why not make a ranking giving them a bit of a boost so that you can see who is up-and-coming? get over yourself.

yes well even if i agreed that a rating system's legitimacy is based on how well it predicts performance, which i do not, you still kind of fail because what future results are you talking about? results on this site? for non-anonymous games, probably even non-gunboat, there are bs factors that come into play which make someone's performance totally dependent on who he is playing. that error is so huge that it makes the difference in predictability that you think you see across rating systems insignificant.
