IIRC, there are a few lawyers here. Anyway, I am doing a subject on ADR so I wanted to ask about your experiences of ADR and how it compares to litigation.

1. Check the orders for hidden supports.
2. Know the stalemate lines (google them).
3. Forgive stabs (if they support/help you afterwards --> Check the orders) but don't forget
4. Alliances are forged by the orders they make (Check the orders)

You can always trust your neighbor ... to give you an unending supply of SCs :-) Stab early, stab often and if you can't decide what to do, stab.

8. Think twice before committing to orders that you will never be able to undo.
9. A war between enemies is waged face to face, a stab between friends will always take place out of vision.
10. The tactical importance of bouncing units is often more than what may at first seem so.
11. Livonia can be important.
12. Armies can be convoyed across the oceans but fleets will never be transported over the land.

bolshoi (0 DX)

ok i will add something - there is no such thing as gunboat strategy. everything you do in gunboat would apply just as well to non-gunboat games. if anything there is some people skills you might call non-gunboat strategy. but for gunboat, there is no extra strategy, it's called diplomacy strategy.
Sargmacher (0 DX)

one difference that may exist is that since it's hard to coordinate it's more worth it to just be an ass and attack everyone. if you're strong enough they will have difficulty getting together a decent response.
rokakoma (19138 D)

@bolshoi, I think there is. In gunboats you must communicatewith the other through builds, supports, etc. If you show your willingness for alliance, support, non-agression builds, that can help a lot. In a regular game you can agree on those, in gunboat metacommunication counts a lot more. The sooner you can form an alliance, the better you are.

Because of lack of communication, the answer is, yes, there is gunboat strategy.
Respond appropriately to circumstances. Activate telepathy and read oppenents' minds. Always understand their point of view.

I was honestly hoping this would be a somewhat helpful thread to some of the new players, but alas, it was not to be. Thanks for derailing the thread, oh master of gunboats and all else, bullshoi.
rokakoma (19138 D)

Also on the other hand, the more enemies you have, the better chances you have, because they can't communicate. The more you keep alive, the bigger the chaos will be among them.

24. Complete the Grand Boatslam. Win a quality gunboat as each nation on the map. Then go through those seven games and ask yourself why you won, and look at all the nice stuff that happened early in the other half of the map for it to happen. Mock them for it and when you're them, don't do that.

Know the magic number of soloing: 12. Once a power has 12 SCs, they are a solo threat.
bolshoi (0 DX)
03 Mar 12 UTC
caveat! don't believe that communication nonsense. there is no such thing as useful communication in gunboat. if some guy is supporting your unit and you believe that now he'll help you out... that's nonsense. a strong player will just do what's best for him. that "communication" doesn't predict future behavior at all.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
03 Mar 12 UTC
That's an interesting number, uclabb. Why 12? Please explain.
uclabb (589 D)
03 Mar 12 UTC
Because when you match up the power of two opposing sides, it isn't number of SC's vs. number of SC's. It's effective number of SC's vs. effective number of SC's. A stop the leader alliance will never be able to get more than 17 or 18 SC's to the front, and the inability to coordinate them well makes it closer to 13 or so. Once the solo threat hits 12, you are quickly reaching a tipping point.
bolshoi (0 DX)
03 Mar 12 UTC
34/3 = a bit more than 11. so with 12 you have more than a third of the board. maybe that is his reasoning.
rokakoma (19138 D)
03 Mar 12 UTC
I'm not sure the definition of gunboat mean WTA game, but correct me if I'm wrong. In that matter, it's not clear for me why would you stop someone to win, instead of maximizing your own SCs until the winner reaches 18.

Dip. Dip never changes.
I logged on to this site for the first time in 2 years today and the forum is almost exactly as I left it... political/religious arguments with neither side willing to compromise, a resident troll who gets most of his attention from other users starting topics about him, and even a 'last user to post wins' thread (although I don't think it's the same one... at least, I hope not.)

It's good to be back!

London more free market than NYC!!!
Excellent article in the New York Times no doubt about how Margaret Thatcher's deregulation of Britain's financial markets is putting London far ahead of New York City/Wall Street.
This doesn't even count the Dodd-Frank insanity.

mainstream media teams up with gop?
as election fraud becomes rampant and government legitimacy is starting to be questioned, the federal reserve, in conjunction with major media outlets as well as the democratic and republican parties, have formed a coalition to deal with this emergency situation.

Muted? Game Chat?
as some may be aware, approximately 25% of the webdiplomacy has muted me as of today. so my question is do those mutes include in-game messages?

more specifically, lets say i join an anonymous game with messaging with some of the muters. will they not hear any of my messages... and not know why i'm not messaging them?
