Teaching a group of high school students
Well, due to the holidays, NMRs, and CDs, the game has been drawn. I thank you all the mentors that helped with the game. Hopefully all the students learned something even though the game did not finish on a satisfying note.

If there are any feedbacks or other volunteers for the next game (where I will ask for a pledge of no CDs), please feel free to let me know.
Thanks again.

not announcing personal knowledge of other players
is that dishonest? i'm in a game as turkey in 1910 facing a multi-country alliance (and holding my own, thank you very much) but I've just discovered that I'm facing an alliance of france, germany, england and russia and all of them know each other personally. is this against the rules? I might win the game anyway, because they're all pretty bad, but still... thoughts?

Anti-Putin Protests
Been rather cut off from news recently but apparently the rigged elections in Russia have caused a decent-sized backlash. Gorbachev has advocated that Putin step down peacefully. Has anyone been watching these protests unfold or have any thoughts on the matter?

I know putin can be pretty annoying but protests? I didnt think he was well known outside out little site.

Ha!

The Russian people may want a strong leader in the Putin mold, but they also want to actually be able to choose him. Putin overplayed his hand when he said that the idea to switch jobs with Medvedev had been decided long before the party conference. It makes the last four years (and the move to make presidential terms six years starting after this one) look to be just a cynical power play. Rigging the elections so blatantly only made things that much starker. Russia may not really want a Western-style liberal democracy, but they certainly don't want to be ruled by a small clique of Kremlin cronies and hordes of corrupt bureaucrats.

Just like in the Kim Jong-il thread, I wonder how long it will take our own Putin33 to come in here and spout his 100% predictable lines about how the Putin the politician is God's (or the dialectic or something) gift to Russia and any criticism of the man can only be the work of reactionary, fascist, antisemitic, bigots.

I live in Montreal, and in French Putin is called Vladimir Poutine, rather amusingly. So I saw a headline that said "Demonstrations Anti-Poutine en Moscou" I was rather confused.
Mafialligator (239 D)

For those who don't know poutine is also a French Canadian dish of French Fries, Cheese Curds and brown sauce/gravy. It's pretty gross unless you're really drunk in which case it's unreasonably delicious.
Mafialligator (239 D)
25 Dec 11 UTC
I suppose it's because in French, "Putin" would be pronounced like "putain", which means "whore" and they wanted to avoid that.

I love you too, Sarg. But you needn't try to challenge the lulz I provide - it is an exercise in futility.

Besides, your opinion cannot be taking seriously, you being still angry over that whole, "YJ is Russia," thing. You know they say a measure of the greatness of a man is how quickly he forgives a conciliatory enemy...

I'm just saying.

In Kingston (Ontario) you can order something called a slider. It's poutine with a bunch of bacon strips in a wrap. So gross but so delicious.

Just going back to the OP, I think the interesting thing is that the largest opposition party is the Communist Party. So I suppose in theory if the demonstrators are right, and the election was rigged, the rigging of the election avoided a possible outcome where a coalition government was formed, in which the direct successor party of old Soviet-era Communist Party would actually have held much of the power. Being a commie I of course would find that very interesting. What do others think?
hammac (100 D)
26 Dec 11 UTC
@Jamie...... I suppose someone has to answer that with - it just goes to show that the ordinary Russian people didn't find that evil empire quite so bad after all - but then I would say that wouldn't I, being a nasty socialist (sorry can't quite make it communist). I too find the prospect of elected communists in Russia intriguing.
