Election time
So, it's election time in Ontario on Thursday (but more importantly the start of Hockey) and I'm embarrassingly uninformed so I'm spending today doing a bit of research. Any two cents from my fellow Ontarians?

Obi's Picks:

DET@DAL: I’m riding with the LIONS…I think this is the year they break their playoff drought, and if the Cowboys are notable for anything in the Romo era, its inconsistency and a tendency to choke under pressure…look for it to come down to a late Stafford drive, one which the Golden Boy will make good on
CAR@CHI: I’m going to go ahead and take the PANTHERS over a Bears team that can’t seem to get much going; offense usually beats defense, but when your offense is as bad as the Bears’ O is, I think an offense like the Panthers’ with Cam and Crew can and will prevail
PIR@HOU: Tempting to go for the upset here, but I’m taking the STEELERS
TEN@CLE: I’ll tale the TITANS, but it’s by no means a lock, and if the Browns won, I wouldn’t be surprised
BUF@CIN: Rolling with the hot hand, the BILLS go 4-0
WAS@STL: Two other teams staying perfect, the REDSKINS at 4-0 and the Rams at 0-4
MIN@KC: The VIKINGS will finally, at long last, be able to take a lead and not blow it…hopefully
SF@PHI: As tempting as it is for me to take an upset pick here, I do think the 49ers will win the division, it’s that weak and they’re the most consistent of the lot, and with Vick’s hand broken and his head concussed, it’s tempting, yes, but I’ll take the EAGLES nonetheless in a hard-hitting game, and secretly hope I’m wrong (go Niners!)
NO@JAC: The SAINTS go marching all over the Jags
SEA@ATL: I’ll take the FALCONS again, but they’d justify that pick this time…losing to the Bucs is one thing, but a loss to the ‘hawks and we could have some sour talk in Atlanta
NYG@ARI: The GIANTS in a blowout
DEN@GB: The PACKERS, too, are set for a blowout here
MIA@SD: And continuing the blowout theme, give one to the CHARGERS
NE@OAK: In my upset special between two teams I can’t stand, the RAIDERS will make it two stunners in two weeks, as McFadden and that Raider offense will prove to the world once and for all, the Pats defense that was such a huge of that dynasty is done
NYJ@BAL: With the Bills and Pats looking competitive this year in the AFC East, and the Baltimore’s yearning to knock Pittsburgh from the top slot in the AFC North, this is a game with two hard-hitting teams trying to prove something: it’s a perfect Sunday Night Football matchup, looks to be a great one, and I’ll take the JETS to win in a slugfest
IND@TB: This would’ve been an upset pick before the season, now it’s just common sense…the BUCS over the Colts, who’d better enjoy these prime time TV slots while they can, because if Manning doesn’t come back, these could be their last moments in the sun for a while

indeed

its not been good

they should get playoffs this year, but arent strong enough to go that far :(
A few fantasy questions here.

I'm sitting DeSean Jackson and thinking about doing the same for Rashard Mendenhall. Right thing to do? I have Kendall Hunter and Michael Bush ready for backups for Mendenhall, and I can choose 2 between Nate Washington, Torrey Smith, Victor Cruz, and Denarius Moore to replace Jackson.

Oh, and the Gold Choices are

DET@DAL: This is going to be an absolute blowout. With Dez Bryant and Miles Austin out, the Cowboys are going to get eaten by the Lions. Score: LIONS 34 - COWBOYS 17
CAR@CHI: This is a tough one, but I'm going to ride the Cam Newton train here. Bears are going to fight though. PANTHERS 24 - BEARS 21
PIR@HOU: Steelers simply do not have the running or passing game to go against this dynamic offense. TEXANS 30 - STEELERS 14
TEN@CLE: With Kenny Britt out and Peyton Hillis in, I'll go Browns all day. Final score, BROWNS 20 - TITANS 13
BUF@CIN: No way this team can contain the Bills. BILLS 31 - Bengals 17
WAS@STL: St. Louis is simply too banged up, and the 'Skins are actually decent this year. REDSKINS 20 - RAMS 10
MIN@KC: Finally a matchup Minnesota can win. VIKINGS 21 - Chiefs 17
SF@PHI: As a Giants fan, I'm loving how hurt these Eagles are. Honestly, I'll admit the Giants have a poor offense, but we tore them up last week, and with Vick getting knocked around like a rag doll, I think San Francisco will take an early lead and never look back. 49'ERS 24 - EAGLES 14
NO@JAC: Is this really a question? SAINTS 28 - JAGUARS 13
SEA@ATL: Two teams that are looking quite pitiful. I mean, Atlanta was thought to be so good this year. As a Roddy White fantasy owner, I hope they pick things up. I'm going FALCONS 27 - SEAHAWKS 9
NYG@ARI: Giants are going to have a rough road against Arizona. I think it'll be very close, especially if Beanie Wells is healthy. Plus, Giants always find some way to screw up. Still, GIANTS 24 CARDINALS 20
DEN@GB: Just another walk in the park. PACKERS 35 - BRONCOS 21
MIA@SD: I'm actually going to go with the upset here. Miami is better than they've been playing. DOLPHINS 20 - CHARGERS 17
NE@OAK: This is my game of the week here. I have lots of Raiders in my fantasy leagues, as well as that behemoth that is Wes Welker. High scoring game, and its a real tossup, but I'm thinking PATRIOTS 38 - RAIDERS 35
NYJ@BAL: As much distaste that I have for the Jets, I respect them as a team. This will be a defensive battle of epic proportions. I think Ravens will have some success running the ball, but the Jets will have more success in passing. Its going to be razor-edge here, but I'll go RAVENS 28 - JETS 26 (on a failed 2 point conversion)
IND@TB: no questions asked. BUCCANEERS 20 - COLTS 14

Det @ Dal: Lions keep things rolling. Too much offense for the Cowboys. I expect a close game though.
CAR@CHI: Bears. Carolina is absolute garbage. And da Bears are only slightly garbage.
PIT@HOU: Texans. The Steelers are greatly overrated. Not much offense at all, and only a so-so defense in my book.
TEN@CLE: Cleveland. They aren't great, but headed in the right direction. Chris Johnson will continue to earn that huge check haha
BUF@CIN: Buffalo. The beat the Pats last week. Cincy is Cincy. nuff said
WAS@STL: Redskins. This is a balanced team and they got Rex behind center. How could they lose....
MIN@KC: Vikings. KC is dreadful
SF@PHI: 49ers. Eagles struggles continue, while Gore breaks out and runs all over that weak run defense.
NO@JAC: Saints. No explanation needed
SEA@ATL: Atlanta. They are another ovverated team, but squeak by the offensively challenged Seahawks.
NYG@ARI: Giants. Giants have a good run game and decent defense. Arizona has neither.
DEN@GB: Packers. No explanation needed.
MIA@SD: SD gets its shit together and wins BIG
NE@OAK: Pats. Pats are too good to lose twice in a row, and beat up on a good Oakland team
NYJ@BAL: Ravens. Expect big things from Ray Rice, and bad things from Sanchez
IND@TB: Colts! Tampa Bay is not a great team, and Painter will make the most of his chance to start, while the Colts defense will slow down the Bucs.

Wow...I like that we hae 4 sets of picks fo far, and 2 for the 49ers winning over the Eagles...

NEITHER of those two picks coming from the 49ers fan. :)

And yes, Cockney, I think I'll be able to keep track of something like this in spite of my mathmatical ineptitude, it's just counting and adding...

obiwanobiwan (248 D)

To be fair, they should've beaten the Cowboys
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
01 Oct 11 UTC
We should've too...the 'skins AND Niners should be 3-0...and just saying that makes me realize how odd this league is where the Bills, Redskins, 49ers, and Lions could've been the 3-0 teams, with the Raiders and Browns at 2-1...

Are we headed back to the 1980s-early 1990s of football?! :)

(For my team's sake...I HOPE SO!) :)
DET, CHI, HOU, CLE, BUF, WAS, KC, PHI, NO, ATL, NYG, GB, SD, NE, BAL, TB.

Personally, I wouldn't sit Desean Jackson @SF. If you benched him, I'd go with Denarius Moore. Tough to stick with Mendenhall, but I think I would start him this week rather than go with Kendall Hunter or Michael Bush.
Thank's THM. I still have another day to decide, but both of them have just been performing so terribly lately. And if Vick gets hurt, DeSean Jackson is worthless for all intensive purposes.

DAL passing attack goes wild at home in a shootout. Plus, isn't it about time the Lion's season comes crashing down around them as Stafford takes a pummeling again? Detroit's on the rise but not quite there yet to sustain it.
CHI tough to evaluate as their 2 losses came against possibly the 2 best teams in the league. There defense seems like it could be a force again though & will torment Cam. The offense gets going against a weak defense at home.
HOU against a not in form PIT.
CLE are a rising power, and TEN nothing special especially w/o Britt and away from home. CLE to take an early lead and laugh all the way home as the Titan's running game becomes increasingly obsolete.
CINCI's running game runs riot at home against a team which, like the Lions, I don't see sustaining its run too long.
STL finally gets its act together. I still expect them to make a credible bid for the playoffs in an appalling division.
MIN too good to keep blowing these leads. AP goes wild.
PHI just too good at home for decent 49ers side that will struggle when it falls behind early.
NO. duh
ARI in my upset of the week. There's a special law that says whenever the Giants start to look impressive and get a good result under their belts they must immediately offset it with a screw-up of epic proportions. 07 is the exception that proves the rule.
GB. Not seeing an upset here. At all.
SD wins in the battle of the disappointing RBs. Rivers destroys weak Dolphin secondary.
NE too good to lose twice in a row, but it will be tough on an impressive OAK. Pats win a high-scoring game.
RAVENS to win 5-4? Both offenses will struggle, but the men from NY more so.
INDY breaks losing streak against woeful Tampa.

This straight up shit is gay, unless you're talking about a survival pool. Many of my NFL thoughts are point spread thoughts. Regarding this week, here's the news:

Whenever the road team from last Monday is on the road the following week(rare), you never never never pick them. Also, the Redskins are 0-4 in their last 4 meetings with St. Louis. I'll take St. Louis +2.5

+1 jmeyersd - that Giants rule is sadly very, very accurate. We go 5-0 to start a season, end it 9-7

Why not create a yahoo, cbssports, espn, or nfl league on there website and do it that way. In one I'm doing for a radio station, I'm in the top twenty out of thousands. I'll be happy to kick all your asses ;-)

Would any of you consider creating a fantasy league, knowing the outcome of the first three weeks?
There already is a webdip fantasy league, and I'm in two at the moment, so that's the max I'll do.

I never have done those on espn and nfl.com, but it'd be nice if we kept track of the webdip people, to see which of us can call the games best :)
SacredDigits (102 D)

DET@DAL: DETROIT has Fairley in the line-up, and the Cowgirls have a center who can't seem to get the ball to Romo. And Romo's playing hurt. He's going to be lucky to finish the game out.
CAR@CHI: DA BEARS. Carolina's got a pretty promising young QB in Cam Newton, but he's not going to take them anywhere on his back alone. Yet.
PIT@HOU: TEXANS take this, the Steelers haven't looked like they deserve to be called the Steelers this year. That Ravens game and then the Manningless Colts taking them to the last seconds. Meanwhile, Schaub and company have been lighting up the scoreboard consistently.
TEN@CLE: I'm going to go with the TITANS here, but a big part of me wants to see the Browns win.
BUF@CIN: I like Andy Dalton and think he's going places, but the BILLS are doing so well that I can't vote against them. Even if I know how good Bills seasons go (I was a Buffalo fan both before and after 0-for-4).
WAS@STL: Bad Rex Grossman showed up, which means he's staying for a few games and the RAMS get their first win.
MIN@KC: Someone needs to win this game, and I'm going to go with the CHIEFS
SF@PHI: I'm going to say this is the game where the EAGLES finally get their shit together.
NO@JAC: No contest. All SAINTS all the time.
SEA@ATL: I kind of hate the FALCONS and I kind of like the Seahawks, but I see no way that this isn't Atlanta's game.
NYG@ARI: The CARDINALS are going to pull this off, as my upset special.
DEN@GB: The PACKERS are going to win this one, it's almost a lock.
MIA@SD: Nobody underperforms like Sandy Eggo, so I think the DOLPHINS are going to snatch this one. Chargers barely beat the Chiefs for God's sakes.
NE@OAK: Tom Brady has something to prove, and he's going to prove it all over the Radiers. Run DMC also has something to prove, and he will prove it, but the PATRIOTS will still hold on.
NYJ@BAL: This game is too close to call. Both teams have had some disappointment this season, but they're also both playoff caliber clubs. I toss this one the JETS way because I like them more.
IND@TB: I want to see Curtis Painter just totally hold this down and make people say, "Peyton who?" But that won't happen. Josh Freeman and the BUCS will crush the Colts.

"da fuck" - Riphen

That is what I said when I read obiwan's comment about he almost picked a upset in the Steelers vs Texans Game.

You did pick the upset.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
02 Oct 11 UTC
You think the Texans are the favorite?

Slow start for Steelers, but they're still the Steelers...only team besides the Pats to win multiple SBs in the last decade...Pro Bowlers on both sides of the ball...owner of the AFC North for most of the years that division's existed...

Against a Texans team that's good, but has yet to win anything, and has folded the last couple years as they've gotten close to the playoffs.

How are the Steelers the underdog here? I'd understand if we were talking about the Peyton-less Colts, but the Steelers have all the pieces...?

In any case, getting closer to game time...we'll find out soon...
SacredDigits (102 D)
02 Oct 11 UTC
Most of the Steelers' Pro Bowls are in the past, and even then, it's partly popularity contest. Ben has looked lost and confused, and the defense has been uncharacteristically sloppy. They're getting old.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
02 Oct 11 UTC
Well, we play them next week, so we'll see... :)

Frank Gore is active but won't start vs. the Eagles/rookie Kendall Hunter will start...on the one hand, I like Frank, but Hunter did look good last week, and score the only TD of that 13-8 game, so we'll see.

Pick one team to win straight up each week. You can't pick the same team more than once. Lose and you're out. PM me your pick by 12:30pm Sunday Toronto time, I'll cut off the picks at that time, and post a list. Good luck.

A suggestion for Kestas:
I think that we should have a record of how many people (But not their identity of course) have muted that person on their profile. It would have a similar reasoning to that of the +1 button, in order for users to see what sort of behaviour is and isn't accepted by the community to promote self-moderation.
