Fools Rush In: Game 67704
Is this the highest stakes game played? Pot of 7000 D. I notice three players have voted to draw already, how disappointing. This is one game I would like to see played to the death.

Who is your money on?

Cheating in WebDiplomacy
I have sent a message to the game mods about a no ingame messaging World XI game Im in days ago without reply - and I think its a clear case of either A) metagaming or B) Multi-account because the level of co-op without any supposed comms is unbelievable.

So far nothing at all from the mods - not even an acknowledgement of the mail - what should I do?

I don't know if anyone is interested in studying or analyzing things like that, but I am. When I was first starting to play diplomacy (back in, oh, February?), I immersed myself in reading all about the strategies and theories that people had written articles on. Since discovering this site (back in, oh, last week?) I've really come to enjoy the Ancient Med variant.

New game: Full press WTA, 48 hours/phase
This game will be standard, but with one rule: each player can only send two messages/phase to each other player. Motivation inside.
FirstPreviousNextLast

The last couple of months, I've been a bit ill, so I have not been able to play a solid game of Diplomacy. To be honest, I've missed it, and I'd like to start again. I'm not feeling completely fit, though, so I need to make a few restrictions.

I'd like to start a full press WTA game, passworded of course, 48 hours/phase, and I don't care about anon vs non-anon. The catch is this: each player can only issue two messages per phase to each other player (14 messages/2 days). This will put a serious limit to negotiations, but I feel it's necessary to avoid overstretching myself.

Finally, I should perhaps talk about points. I have no preference, anything from 50 up to 500 is fine with me.
Any takers?
interested, but how will you monitor cheating?
The Czech (39951 D(S))
26 Sep 11 UTC
honor system still works for some of us.
yeah I understand and believe to be included in that group, but it is hard to vouch for 5 others. Anyway, I still would like to play.
I don't want to monitor cheating. It is a passworded game, so everyone will know who plays and who doesn't. I think the honour system will do fine.

Also, if you cheat (as in send more than two messages to a single player), at least one player will know (the one you just sent your messages). In terms of risk-reward, cheating isn't even worth it.

@Czech: would you like to play?

1. Bas
2. Lando
3. Czech?
4.
5.
6.
7.

Who else?
retreats and builds get two messages as well, right?

Draugnar (0 DX)

And iof we do the "Oh, by the way/I almost forgot" immediately after sending a message, does it count as another message or just as part b of the same message? I.e. does a new message only start after we get a response from the other plyer or significant time has past? OT is a matter of seconds enough time to be considered a new message?
I think "part b" is a second message. Think it through before hitting send.
santosh (335 D)
26 Sep 11 UTC
I think it sort of simulates play-by-(snail)mail with short phases. Definitely interesting. And violators of the rule would essentially be meta-ing. Honor works for the latter, I see no reason it wouldn't work for the former.
fortknox (2059 D)
26 Sep 11 UTC
I think if you mess up, you are docked a message in the next round :D

I'm soooooo pissed that I have too many games going on right now to apply for this one. I love the restriction and the way you spell it out.

Tell me how it goes! I might try to set one up as well once things cool off here.

Oh, and for the penalty: it should be like golf, that is, you call it on yourself when you make a mistake. Of course, the player receiving the messages should invite the other player to out himself. If it doesn't happen, the case should be made on public press. I believe it's important that people out themselves so that the mistake is not too revealing (as in: "Oh! You've been talking lots and lots to this power but not to me... You must be allied!)
And then, the penalty should indeed be that you only get to send one message per player for the following phase.

What a neat idea Bas. I'm really looking forward to playing with you. And I wish you a quick recovery.
The goal of my special rule is to have a diplomacy game I can play without overfatiguing myself, that is still fair. As long as the game is fun and no-one abuses the system, all is fine. Regarding the rules, I say the most important one is "use common sense".

A couple of good points were made:
- Retreats and builds are crucial phases. These absolutely deserve the two messages.
- It can be huge fun to spam the global chat with chit-chat. But this game shouldn't turn into a public press with benefits. So you get to post two serious (negotiation-related) messages on the global , and unlimited bullshit. Also, when pauses etc. are discussed, global chat is free.
- If you mess up your post, tough luck. Check before you send! If you really need to clarify something, send the errata on global... (if you have posts left)
- I like Cachimbo's suggestion. He who violates the rule has to announce it on global, to be ridiculed by the rest.

So we have
- Bas
- Lando
- Draugnar
- Eggzavier
- fortknox
- santosh?
- Czech?

@Cachimbo: This game is designed to be playable without a large effort time-wise. You'll only need to login once a day and check som messages. Please reconsider.

Oh, and let's discuss points and anon vs. non-anon.
Ursa (1617 D)

I'll join if you'll have me :)

You wrote: "- It can be huge fun to spam the global chat with chit-chat. But this game shouldn't turn into a public press with benefits. So you get to post two serious (negotiation-related) messages on the global , and unlimited bullshit. Also, when pauses etc. are discussed, global chat is free."

Does that mean a serious message on global goes instead of a private message? Or do you have two global messages to spend also?
You have two global messages to send each phase.

With regards to points - I am easy. Anything between 5 D and 3200 D is fine with me. I think I prefer anon, but am happy with non as well.
Cachimbo (1181 D)
27 Sep 11 UTC
@ Bas: I made the "mistake" of accepting an invite to a wonderful game and have overloaded my capacities already. Though I'm really tempted to join this one as well (I'm really looking forward to playing you, Czech and Lando) I know I would not be able to think it through properly and I find that to be disrespectful of the other players that may count on me during the game (not to mention that it would severely hinder my chances of winning!).
I'll be on the next one for sure.
Favio (385 D)

Hmm....this is interesting. I'd be willing to play if there is still a spot.
Draugnar (0 DX)
27 Sep 11 UTC
50 to 75 D is fine by me. I prefer non-anon, but will play anon.

And Lando, if it is non-anon, my first message to you every phase will be "Fuck off, Lando". :-)

J/K. You caught me on a bad day in the other thread. That game has actually gotten interesting again now that we have an active Germany in it.
@Ursa: I'd be pleased to have you.
And no, posts on the global don't substract form your other posts. It's 2 posts per phase per tab.

@Cachimbo: That's unfortunate. I'll play you later.

@Favio: I'm gonna be a bit of a bitch here. There appears to be a spot left, but I do care about GR and resign rate. First of all, what's with the resigns? Second, you do realize that Lando, Draugnar and fortknox are all quite high on the All-time GR list? If your actual skill is well reflected by GR, a match-up between you and them won't be fun for either side.

Points: let's put it at 75.

@Czech/santosh: interested, or should I stop asking?
Ursa (1617 D)

Any other fans of the series interested in having a middle earth map for diplomacy? it is not on the to do list or planned at all, and i am just polling for thoughts on the topic. thoughts and ideas would be great, and if enough people want it then we can tell the mods and get it made, maybe.
