Due to finals, vacations, busy schedules, it appears the list for mods to look into has grown quite large. I'm busy at work, but will try to power through some of them. Please be patient with us in the mean time while we try to get through the backlog, k?

New game for Summer
Hello, In the summer I find that I often go away for the weekend to cottages without internet access. Therefore I would like to propose a game where I hope people will ready there orders daily but give 3 days to allow people to go away for the weekend. gameID=60328.

Person (Germany) missed their first turn. I hit draw/cancel. I'd prefer cancel but half the people wanted draws. All but England voted, he knew he had the advantage and didn't care. Another person left. (France) England definitely won't vote. Now that Turkey is tie for 1st place, he removed his vote as well.

Beginner Q about pause
IWe have one player who hasn't entered moves and the game is about to advance. Can I hit Pause to allow him extra time or is it some kind of voting thing where you need a majority of the remaining players? I'm not trying to do this on the sly or anything, the player is actually someone I am fighting but so far none of us have missed any turns and I hate to see the game decided by something as lame as him getting back later than expected from the long weekend.

What's a tolerable amount of times to have lost your internet connection during a game or felt a game was dishonest and resigned. How many resignations are permissible before it's a red flag for a poor player?

Draugnar (0 DX)

I have no resigns and my rule of thumb is no more than 2% or I won't play with you unless I know you and know why.

Oh, and "a game was dishonest" is a bullshit excuse in my book. You just guaranteed I won't play with you. If you think someone is cheating, email the mods at [email protected] but don't resign. A) it gives the cheats what they want and B) is you are wrong, you destroy the game for those who you leave behind. If you think someone is cheating in a live game, gets the others to gang up on them and eliminate them. If it is gunboat, then it is probably a case of you not realizing how communication can be done through your moves and how the best players can predict the moves of the peopl around them.
TiresiasBC (388 D)

No resigns here.

When I was last more active on the site, I stopped having time for Diplomacy and I had to drop out of the leagues. I was told someone would replace me in the game I was in, but no one could be found in time. So I kept playing the game. Ended up winning, in fact, but leaving the leagues left a sour taste in my mouth.

Don't commit if you can't follow through. That's why I'm not going to apply to rejoin the leagues until I'm sure I'll have the time for a whole season, and it's why you shouldn't join a Diplomacy game unless you have every reasonable expectation that you'll be able to finish it.

Disasters happen, but excuses are a lot more common.

Sorry if this seems exceptionally bitter; it's late, and I'm very frustrated with NMRs in one of my games. I think I'll stand by this in the morning, though.
SacredDigits (102 D)
30 May 11 UTC
Yeah, I have no resigns, although I almost had one because my computer was freaking out during a live game. I NMR'ed once. And felt bad about even that. Generally, there's not a real excuse for resigning, IMO.
MichiganMan (5126 D)
30 May 11 UTC
Life happens! I have a varied and continually changing schedule -- most of my resigns (which I know are too many for most to accept) are due to starting and having something come up and not being able to finish. That being said, I only play 5 min live games so the chances are higher that something arises.

I don't like to do it, but one has to have priorites and an entertaining game is, and should be, last behind family and work.

Just my 2 cents take it or leave it.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 May 11 UTC
I choose to leave it. When you sign up for a live game, you sign up with six other people. If this were a two person game where you could just resign and the other person get the win, that would be one thing. But you destroy the flow of the game and the fin for the other six when you don't play it out because something else came up. You are the worse kind of player who has *no* respect for his fellow players. You should be ashamed and, honestly, should be banned for displaying an attitude like this.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 May 11 UTC
Oh, and choosing to play at work is just fucking rude to the other players. You *know* something will come up in the three or more hours it takes to play.
fiedler (1293 D)
30 May 11 UTC
apropos, I have been thinking a 2 week ban on joining any new games would be a good punishment for NMR-ing. It would A) dissuade NMR-ing, and B) reduce the number of games a chronic NMR-er can join. All adding up to a statistically significant drop in NMR's.

also, playing this game at work probably means you don't deserve the job.
joey1 (198 D)

I am very lucky that I didn't get a couple of reigns when I just lost internet access for 4 days. It did mess up a couple of game that I was in though. (Turning a draw into a probable defeat)
MichiganMan (5126 D)
30 May 11 UTC
I have the utmost repsect for my fellow players but you cannot possibly tell me that this game is more important that "real life" can you? If so, you need to have your priorities examined. Games are for fun, distraction, entertainment etc, they are not and should not be placed in such high regard. I make every effort to have the time to play, and as you can see from my stats, in the VAST majority of games I stay to the end -- win, lose or draw. If things ran as you arrogantly expect them to run, I'd leave clients waiting, wife and children complaining and "real life" on hold because I joined an Internet board game. I am glad I am not your client, spouse or child. I promise you that every game is begun with the utmost intention of fulfilling my obligation to the other players. @ Draugner, you need to get off your high horse and take a big dose of REALITY and stop obsessing over other peoples actions. Yes CDs and NMRs suck and cause a lot of cancelled games and unbalanced outcomes -- deal with it like a rational adult NOT a whiny entitled child!

@fiedler

Please don't comment on what you think I deserve or don't deserve. I work for myself, but my schedule changes and varies from day to day, and as I've aptly explained, is the cause of any NMR or resigns. It's called "REAL LIFE" you aught to check it out sometime!
Triumvir (1193 D)
30 May 11 UTC
@MM - I agree with your comments on priorities. I have a wife, two jobs, and am a student. All of these things I place, rightly, before Diplomacy. I realize that life can sneak up and change plans - and so I don't play live games.

You said "Games are for fun, distraction, entertainment." That is true. So how are you making games "fun" and "entertaining" for your fellow players if you join them, knowing that you may leave? Perhaps you should try playing a game with a longer phase length (I won't play anything shorter than 24 hours). This allows you to enjoy the game. It allows your fellow players to enjoy the game. And it significantly reduces the chances of something coming up that causes you to CD.

Triumvir (1193 D)
30 May 11 UTC
Oh, and for the general conversation - I have no resigns.

@Michiganman and his opponents in this debate:

I would humbly suggest that there is no real argument here. The reason is quite simply because both sides don't give the game the same meaning or value. I don't think you can fault someone for valuing family and work more than a game that they still really enjoy. And I don't think you can fault people who love this game very much and value attitudes of respect and dedication. In and of themselves, all of these values seem perfectly good values to me. How one decides to prioritize one set over the other is not an indication of a lack of respect, but an indication that you view things differently. As far as I can tell, there's enough people around on this site to find people who share your values, regardless of what those are.
I do sincerely believe, however, that ad hominem arguments and public declarations about other players on our personal profiles show a great lack of respect: you may disagree with someone, but making it personal just seems wrong to me. Especially here, where players make a great case for respecting their opponents.
Maniac (184 D(B))
30 May 11 UTC
0% - which masks 1 tiny little resignation, I was been hammered in a live game (i don't play that many) and didn't know they could drag on sooooo long. Anyway I kept making moves into the small hours even though I was beat, but then the site went down and I went to bed. Next morning I had the first 'resigned' on my score sheet. However, I bribed Kestas to expunge this from my record and it would have remained hidden if you pesky kids hadn't asked for my 'honest' resignation rate - damn your eyes.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 May 11 UTC
I can most certainly blaim MM for his callous attitude to the game. If he can't guarantee the time for a complete live game, he shouldn't play live games. Plain sand simple. Instead, you chooses to disrespect his fellow players by fucking up their games when he CDs.
Cachimbo (1181 D)
30 May 11 UTC
You can disagree with him. You can even chose not to play with him. Calling him names and making your discontent public on your profile, as far as I'm concerned, crosses the line.
Also, the word "callous" seems a touch too strong: I love this game, play it with values that probably lie somewhere between yours and his, but it is a game. I've walked off games I value much more than diplo to run to my family's needs before, and I'm sure I did the right thing in those instances.
Cachimbo (1181 D)
30 May 11 UTC
Having said all that, if I knew chances were good that I could not finish a game, I would probably avoid playing the live kind. In fact, I have yet to try it here, precisely because I can't be sure that I'll be able to finish it. Though some have made the point a bit more aggressively, that much I do agree with.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 May 11 UTC
Yes, leaving for family needs is one thing, but playing live games when you are working, even if you work for youeself, is disrespectful to the community and it *is* callous. Callous means "not caring" and he clearly does not care about the enjoyment his fellow players might have received had there been someone reliable in his place.

As far as posting it in my profile. I'm not the only one does this. And I've decided to start naming and shaming those who would damaga our community with their willful disrespect of the community.

Am I right in saying that if two opposing fleets ‘bounce’ in unoccupied waters and during that same turn one of those units is dislodged by two separate units that the dislodged unit can not retreat to the waterway in which the ‘bounce’ occurred? Or can it?

What to do in this situation?
I asked for a pause in this game around two months ago but during the pause one of the players left the site, then I emailed a mod who said he would unpause if the player didn't respond in day. However another play asked that the pause be left on for a couple days as he needed it but he hasn't returned either. I am frankly sick of this an would like the game cancelled but other players aren't being responsive.. gameID=55365#gamePanel
