With the first over to be bowled in just under 10 hours (India Vs. Bangladesh), I'm trying to find someone gullible who's willing to bet on Bangladesh, so that I can make some fast money.

That aside, being an Indian national, I'm rooting for Team India.

What network can you watch the ICC world cup on?
Putin33 (111 D)
18 Feb 11 UTC
Bangladesh beat them in '07 didn't they? Not too far fetched although I wouldn't bet on it. India has been slaughtering everybody in ODIs.

I don't think Australia will make it out of the quarterfinals this time.

Sadly minnows don't have a prayer this go around. The format is stacked against them.

The opening ceremony looked amazing...

Anyway predictions?

From group A - Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand, Zimbabwe
From group B - India, South Africa, England, Windies

Sri Lanka over Windies, England over Australia, South Africa over NZ, and India over
Zimbabwe

Sri Lanka over South Africa
India over England

Final - Sri Lanka over India

32 runs in the first 3 overs...Sehwag is killing Bangladesh already.

Unfortunately, (and I hate to say it) Australia has fallen from former glory. And we all blame Ricky Ponting. :)
ava2790 (232 D(S))
19 Feb 11 UTC
Well, if all your top players retire all at once, that's bound bound to happen. Ponting and Michael Hussey are injured, and Brett Lee is good, but I'm sure we'll figure out how to get him injured fast enough. Bollinger is a strong player and has a lot of experience on the subcontinent pitches after 3 years of T-20 matches in the IPL. Everyone else, however, is a bunch of newbs as far as I'm concerned. Good luck to your frail squad, Aussies! :P
ava2790 (232 D(S))
19 Feb 11 UTC
Hoho...half the innings left and Sehwag's already on his way to a century.
ava2790 (232 D(S))
19 Feb 11 UTC
Ok this is getting ridiculous. Three overs left, and he's on the way to 200 runs.
ava2790 (232 D(S))
19 Feb 11 UTC
Dammit I spoke too soon. Out for 175.
Putin33 (111 D)
19 Feb 11 UTC
Well, Australia did just destroy England in the Commonwealth Bank series. But I don't know what that means due to the injuries, especially to England's bowlers.
That said they won't make the semis. I'd love it if they don't advance out of the group stage.
Putin33 (111 D)
19 Feb 11 UTC
And here I thought Bangladesh was supposed to have good bowlers. Maybe this'll be like 2003 for them.
Putin33 (111 D)
20 Feb 11 UTC
Kenya all out with a measly 69. Terrible. Looks like they haven't recovered from the West Indies cup.

largeham (149 D)

Ugh, we (as in India) have no bowlers.
Putin33 (111 D)
20 Feb 11 UTC
Doesn't matter, your batting will crush most opponents.
ava2790 (232 D(S))
20 Feb 11 UTC
Putin, looks like we'll spend this entire month talking India vs. Sri Lanka. To be fair, the islanders did a solid job with the Canadian team today, and Jayawardane's 176 is a run better than Sehwag's 175 of yesterday. But I'll just say that the minnows matches are easy wins, and that the real test is coming up next week.
Putin33 (111 D)
21 Feb 11 UTC
Well yes and Sri Lanka was also playing the outgunned Canadians at home in the opener, so I'm sure the crowd played a factor. Although I would give Canada some credit, they did almost defeat England in the warm ups. They have some decent bowlers. I'm really hoping some minnow does well so the ICC doesn't close the door forever on minnows in this tournament. I guess Ireland is the best chance. They beat Zimbabwe in warm ups by a solid margin, so here's hoping they can take out Bangladesh.

I'm watching Australia vs. Zimbabwe live (http://www.cricvid.com/).

Early days, but how on earth are the reigning champions being held back at only 14 after 7 overs?
largeham (149 D)

lol, Australia is doing pretty shit. I expected much better from them after thrashing England.

GO CANADA!
If not Canada then Australia.

I haven't watched cricket in 2 years, so I don't know whats going on.
Putin33 (111 D)
21 Feb 11 UTC
Zimbabwe did a nice job bowling, although it could have been lower considering how bad Australia was early on (I went to sleep when it was overs and Australia only had 15). Too bad Zimbabwe is not doing anything batting-wise....

I went to sleep and woke up 6 hours later, the match is going on and Zimbabwe is now losing? WHA? Come on...

"Early days, but how on earth are the reigning champions being held back at only 14 after 7 overs?"
It was that bad at one point? When I started watching they were at 140 after 30 overs.
Putin33 (111 D)
21 Feb 11 UTC
Yeah I really thought Zimbabwe had a chance in this one, but Coventry, Taylor, Taibu, etc, all out within the first 13 overs? Bad. The back end of their line up. They were on pace to not even break 100.
Putin33 (111 D)
21 Feb 11 UTC
*The back end of their line up prevented a truly embarrassing loss, I should say.

Fox News
This is one of the saddest and funniest (in a twisted sort of way) videos I have ever seen:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RClJ6vK9x_4
This seemed very apropos of the debate in the NPR thread re: Fox's reliability compared with other stations. This seems to me to provide the definitive solution to that debate.
Thoughts?

Zero Tolerance or Turn The Other Cheek?
I recently had an encounter with an annoying little twerp in which he crossed (in my opinion at least) the metagaming line. The question is should I bother to mention it to our already overworked mods? Should we attempt to crush all damaging forms of metagaming with an iron first, or should we ignore the more minor forms of cheating?

Performance issues
As a newbie I am not sure if I am doing something wrong or not, but I am seeing two performance problems that are quite irritating. I time out readying orders, and also every time I change pages on the site there is a delay of 10 seconds or so before I can do anything. Is this normal?

Proper English in diplomatic correspondence.
What is your opinion on using proper English in diplomatic correspondence as opposed to shorthand (like u = you, wanna = want to etc.) I am usually less likely to trust a shorthand player and prefer full English communications.

Mostly Irrelevant Question
So, I didn't think this would ever come up, but:

If you have an SC left, but it's not one of your home centres, and your last unit is destroyed, and then the game ends, what goes on your record? And are you considered defeated immediately? Or not until someone walks over to your SC and sits there over the winter?

"Rango" is Lousy
I like Johnny Depp. I think "Gilbert Grape," "Pirates otC I," "Ed Wood" and "Sleepy Hollow" are all very good. But I saw "Rango" today, misled by the generally good reviews, and found it dark, vulgar, violent, slow and fatally self-aware in an ironic, in-jokey way. If you loved it, peace to you. I did not.

Country assignments
A group that I play with are moving our correspondence game to web diplomacy. Normally, we switch country assignments between games so people don't have to play as the same country twice in a row. Is there a way to manually select who plays as what country or can it only be done randomly?

Readying orders.
I'm in an anonymous gunboat (might be a tautology, still new-ish) at the moment with someone who saves his orders but never readies them, as there are 24 hour phases where most people are finished after around 10 or so this this could be getting quite annoying if it continues throughout the game. Just wondering if there's any way to communicate that it would be good for them to ready them?

Fear or greed?
The Sage of Omaha once said that investors should try to be "fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful." Which tendency, if either, tends to govern your Dip play, especially when you divert from a long-range plan (i.e. to stab earlier than you had hoped)?

This Time On Philosiophy Weekly: "What Do YOU Think Heaven And Hell Are Like, Then?"
That's a question I got on the bus this week, and it's been on my mind ever since, sort of simmering there...just when I think I'm happily ready to watch a movie, on comes Hamlet and instantly he's talking about this and that about death and there the question is again, so I put it to you as well, WebDip members--play Dante. If YOU could have your perfect, 100% version of what the two "afterlives" are, what would each be like? Is it anything to be excited about?
