i personally love it. but i find that the only exciting MLS team to watch is the Sounders due to their amazing crowd and atmosphere. But the MLS is nothing like Barclays

Oh, yeah...being a soccer/football fan in the US sucks, lol. The only time I get to watch a match is when I go to the local Irish pub.
vamosrammstein (757 D(B))
16 Apr 10 UTC
You don't get Fox Soccer Channel? My shitty new cable service actually gives me that, so I actually get to watch some real games sometimes. MLS sucks in my opinion though, but I'm spoiled by watching UEFA Champions league all the time.
SteevoKun (588 D)
16 Apr 10 UTC
I don't spend much time at home, I spend most of my time out of the house. It seems like when I'm home FSC usually has snippets or skysports news on, not actual matches.
vamosrammstein (757 D(B))
16 Apr 10 UTC
Yea that happens sometimes, but weekends are good, and when I get home from school there is usually a match on from like 3-5 or so.
SteevoKun (588 D)
16 Apr 10 UTC
Unfortunately I work 9-5, so it's just evenings and weekends for me. I used to see quite a few matches on the weekends, but I don't spend so much time on the weekends anymore.
Nope. Americans ignore soccer. Doesn't really stand up to (American) football in terms of fan interest.

Soccer is a paradox in the U.S. So many children play it in junior leagues in their youth but quit in high school in favor of other sports e.g. American football, basketball, etc.

Unfortunately, most sports journalists love to trash soccer as their whipping boy which only fuels the lackluster impression the mass American public has of the world's most popular sport. As an American who has gone to the World Cup to cheer on the U.S., I am very pessimistic about the MSL ever achieving a national audience. However, for the few and the proud who are out there, bless you. Screaming the Seminoles' war cry (borrowed from FSU) as a true American cheer was one of the best experiences of my life.

"The only time I get to watch a match is when I go to the local Irish pub."

They watch it all the time in an Italian restaurant here.

Can't say I get it. At all. zzz

I mean...... I think it's catching on, slowly.

Case in point, I was just out (at 5AM admittedly) at a restaurant called Big Bite which is essentially just trashy American food, college students everywhere out partying on a Thursday night, and what's on TV? Soccer.

Now...... that doesn't necessarily mean it's THAT popular. It's not. But a significant number of people like it, maybe about as much as like baseball.

Then again I do go to school at an incredibly ethnically diverse campus, that may have something to do with it.

Ah yes, aum, I feel you about the journalists.

My roommate doesn't do much besides watch ESPN.... so I peripherally get to hear a lot of what those sportscasters say and... can I just say...... their lot is one of the rudest, most ignorant, and most abrasive group of people I've seen. Lol.

The way they trash cricket and non-American stuff is really just kind of.... gross. And also the way they never discuss anything substantive and are really rude to each other and are very loud and obnoxious about shit no one cares about....

yeah. I don't like them very much, don't mean to offend anyone who does.

MLS is poor in quality compared to even small European leagues. Probably because of spirit of population. Here in Europe when some important mach is on, cities looks like martial law is on. So much energy is in the air, that it is hard to describe it with words, maybe collective madness is closest to truth :)))

i personally would love an MLS team in indianapolis where i live. i would buy season tickets. I agree abotu the sportscasters. I watch sportsnation and whenever a top play is a soccer goal the guy says with sarcasm that was the best goal i'v ever seen in all my time watching soccer.i really want to send in complaints. i don;t get fox soccer channel. but it is on fox sports midwest rarely. i wish that ESPN never got rid of the champions league. But at least ESPN is airing the barclays

Soccer is the world sport, whereas American Football is a quaint local curiosity. It's popular now, but over the next fifty years will subside to the point where old people have to tell young people about their "national game" and the good old days. The young people of course won't care. Luckily the spirit of the game will be kept alive by exhibits at museums.

"I can't hear you over all the money the NFL makes "

Touche. Take that Europe. LOL. They've been trying soccer leagues, both outdoor and indoor in the US for decades and it fails every time. I know Philly has a soccer team in this new league, but I couldn't tell you where they play or what they are called. the only men's soccer player's name I could tell you is Alexi Lawler, Lawless, something like that, and I only remember him because I remember he looked like the lead singer of the Spin Doctors, although even that memory is fuzzy. Before him, Pele. That's it, all I know. And I played soccer competitively as a kid, my team was frequently 2nd in Statewide tournaments (Screw you Willingboro NJ), but interest dies off for most youth in the US.

Toronto FC is actually kind of a big deal in Toronto. Sportscentre covers their games and they sell out every night. The large immigrant population there comes out in droves, but I don't know what the growth potential is or anything.

Never been to a TFC game but it has a reputation for being a lot of fun. Sells out every night. Although I would say I prefer Canadian Football to Soccer.
Gary (2194 D)

One point to note...the sport we are talking about is not soccer it is Association Football or just plain old Football. Soccer is such an ugly name for "the beautiful game".

football
Is Canadian football just American football with 10 extra yards on the field?
Sorry Gary, you lose. If we are talking about the new league that just opened in United States, you are talking about soccer.
Jimbozig (0 DX)
16 Apr 10 UTC
10 extra yards lengthwise. and I believe another 10 yards widthwise. and an extra 10 yards at teh back of each endzone. Also only 3 downs, one extra player per side, no fair catches, the possibility of scoring one point by kicking it through the endzone, etc.

i'm laughing at the guy who was saying france would win the world cup. and isn't Zidane retired?

who is to say though that it won't grow. A lot of teens are becoming big fans. My school is full of jerseys. i myself own 5. Plus look at the money made in the MLB. I dont; see Baseball as americas pasttime anymore and there is still alot of money there
