Smoking Banned
My workplace has just banned all tobacco product use on company property. This is not just inside, but includes parking lots and all outdoor areas as well. Two violations of the policy will result in termination of employment.

Wow, what does one violation get you?
Chrispminis (916 D)

Wow that sucks. I'm a non-smoker, but seriously? It's a shame that the very act of smoking itself has become immoral. Yes, I know it's the leading cause of statistics, but there are many things that do more harm, and not even outside? The stress'll kill you faster.

That's terrible. My university has prohibitions inside, and within fifteen feet from the entrances of buildings, but that's just crazy.
Stukus (2126 D)

Where do you work? If you work at say, an oil refinery, that'll color my answer.

For the record, I love clean-air laws and wish none of you smokers would ever pollute my clean, clean breathin' air.

Sounds pretty simple to. Don't use tobacco products on company property. If you don't like it, either leave or buy enough shares of stock so that you can get the rule changed. The company owns the land/building, so they get to set the rules. Other completely arbitrary rules (like dress codes) are already in place, so I don't see why different arbitrary rules can't be set as well.

I know some who works at a explosives plant. And they can't even have cigarettes or lighters/matches past the gate. They place them in a locker at security shed and when on break go outside fence limits to smoke. The fence is about 400 yards from plant. They just stand there 5 feet more away big differnce.

He says even the finished explosives would need more then a little spark to ignite. But rules are rules. And you can fired for not placing smoking materials in security shed.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

@podium. Clearly a line must be drawn somewhere... the boundary is the most obvious place to draw it.

Regarding the original post, I'm not sure its necessarily a good idea, but they are free to set the rules.

@Chrispminis, are you sure that they're saying its immoral? I'd have thought the reasons would be more pragmatic than that.

One the one hand, as most other people, I do have some feeling of rebellion that drives me to oppose such bans.

On the other hand... this is a really bad habit, and to a certain degree I do approve of this pressure, even when seemingly unjustified, as smokers should be pushed out of this with all means possible.

I've been a smoker for 15 years, still am, if it makes any difference :)
vamosrammstein (757 D(B))

Yea but if somebody screws that one up somehow, that's big boom very bad right there. If somebody smokes or chews in a parking lot, it's not gonna cause someone to die on the spot.
Octavious (2701 D)
30 Mar 10 UTC
It's completely out of order. The idea that a few smokers will dirty the sweet and pure air you find in a parking lot is madness. I have always been in favour of banning smoking in the working environment and public buildings, but to ban it in the open serves no purpose other than an feeble attempt to force the smoker to give up.

In an ideal world the smokers would leave the company and get employed in a rival company that, due to its less heavy handed control policies, attracts better people and puts the original company out of business... Well... one can dream....

Smoking is stupid, but people can do it outside if they want. Never inside though... that shit reeks.

As for the personal choice of it.... well.... you're addicted. Why you got that way isn't my issue. If you are starting to smoke (as many of my college peers are) then I will tell you you are an idiot and to stop.

However if you have smoked forever I'm not going to pass judgment. Who knows, maybe you were a lot stupider back when you got hooked.

Just dispose of the damn butts properly. I'm tired of seeing sparks on the road when drivers throw them out.... especially when I'm walking along the sidewalk lol.

That ban lowers insurance premiums. Also as a none smoker, I hate having to walk though a cloud of smoke to get inside, or the stink of cigarette smoke on the smokers as they come in after smoking. Studies have also shown that smokers often take more and longer breaks than none smokers, and generaly are less productive. So get use to it, more laws restricting smoking are coming. If you want to kill self by smoking do it at home. I assure you, your death will likely be long and very painfull, just don't make the rest of use share your choice.

I used to work at place that didn't allow you to bring cell-phones with cameras onto the property, nor could you drive while on a cell phone. Luckily my cell phone was so crappy it had no camera, but it was an inconvenience for a lot of people.

And in an ideal world, the smokers wouldn't smoke and would live longer, healthier lives without any sort of chemical addiction. But an ideal world of bankruptcy and cancer is good, too, I guess?

"smoked"
Stukus (2126 D)

A) Intelligence isn't a single linear value. You can be a genius at one thing and stupid at everything else.
B) Einstein was unaware of the sheer number of health risks of which we are now aware that are associated with smoking.
C) If Einstein knew the dangers and still took up smoking then yes, that would be a stupid decision.
SSReichsFuhrer (145 D)

the english language has a problem. smart and stupid arent really comparable. look at it as stupid is the opposite of wise. and dumb is the opposite of knowledgeable. einstein was dumb, not stupid. he was unwise in not caring for his health, not unknowledgeable. he was foolish
Zeno Izen (100 D)

My point is similar to your rebuttal--to dismiss smoking as stupid oversimplifies the matter. Tobacco is a joy and a pleasure that many people throughout history, from all walks of life and all stages of wisdom, have enjoyed for centuries. Non smokers can't understand this, which is fine. But to call smokers stupid is not even close to a real point, and it undermines your argument.
Stukus (2126 D)

Not getting cancer is a joy and a pleasure that many people throughout history, from all walks of life and all stages of wisdom, have enjoyed for centuries. Please let me continue to enjoy it by not smoking in my face.
Good for your company. There must be a reason why they banned it. They probably suspect that it has health risks. Good for them for looking out for their employees.

Cigarette smoke does not give you "instant cancer." And a waft of second hand smoke is an infinitesimal fraction of the health risks that you are exposed to every day. If you are that concerned about second hand smoke, it would only be logical and consistent for you to try to ban all of the other things that similarly endanger your health.
"Good for them for looking out for their employee"???

So should my employer tell me what kind of food to eat, what kind of car to drive, where to live, what lifestyle activities I should engage in....like skydiving, whether I have unprotected sex...jeez, I can go on!

I work for a hospital. People used to smoke in their offices, nurses in the breakrooms, doctors in dictation rooms or getting ready for surgery. We put a ban on smoking about 10 years ago. The employees and staff all pretty much smoke in their cars and in nooks and crannies outside that they can get away with it.

I don't like smoking, but I know some very nice people who smoke, many of them my friends. But what I hate worse than smoke caused by smokers is the litter caused by smokers. Cigarette butts everywhere. Many smokers seem to feel it is their right to toss butts wherever they please. It seems cigarette butts and beer cans constitute the bulk of all litter wherever I go.
Zeno Izen (100 D)

The butt issue is very real. In many places those things wash into the storm drainage systems and pollute streams and lakes. Of course cities could do better at filtering their storm water, but that's a separate issue.

I recently purchased new health insurance. The very first question relating to health from each company's application was about smoking. Every one. It seems to be the strongest contributor to high healthcare costs.

If the insurance companies have centered their policies around smokers and non-smokers, there are definitely some health issues there.

Jonathan Wellington II vs. Johnny Wells, Jr.- UK/USA Differences... What Are They?
I have the most amazing professor for Honors Shakespeare, and she's from England (no idea which part, or how to tell) and she cracks up the whole class when she'll say something in her natural accent, and then, totally alien-sounding, in "American." "Fork" in English sounds different than in American... and the US versions of UK shows, and vice versa... coffee vs. tea- what's something UK/USA, and which "version" is "better?"

bryn "ancients" needs 2 more players!
I've set up a game for some work colleagues to join but we are 2 players short. It is anonymous with comms. The game name is "bryn ancients" and the password is "pps". It has 3 hrs left on the clock. You will need to search for game to find it. It will be our first ancients game.

I hope some of you can fill the game.
