question
Can someone tell me about the new world variant? Is it still in trial mode?
I tried to create a game with it, and it says my account is not qualified for it.
Is it like a paid-member only thing? I've been on for awhile now, but haven't noticed it...Thanks!

Waiting for an order with only one option in a 10 day game...
I'm in a 10 day game (anonymous, so I won't give specifics or a link) where only one player has a retreat order this phase and all they can do is disband as they are completely surrounded, yet they haven't issued any order and the other players are all forced to wait the full 10 days...

Riddle (used in an oxbridge interview)
You have two pieces of rope.
You know that both ropes take exactly one hour to burn.
However they do not necessarily burn at a constant rate, i.e after half the rope has burned, you can not assume half an hour has passed.
How can you measure exactly 45 minutes?

Do you only have the rope and a way to set them on fire or some other tools?
dave bishop (4694 D)
02 Jan 10 UTC
No tools but a lighter I'm afraid.

(and a stopwatch)
Don Corleone (277 D)
02 Jan 10 UTC
Brilliant! Excellent riddle.
You light both ends of the first rope, and one end of the second. When the first is gone, you light the other end of the second. When the second is gone, that's precisely 45 minutes.
dave bishop (4694 D)

Very very good!
Have you heard it before?
Acosmist (0 DX)

Where did you get that phrasing of the riddle, dave?
dave bishop (4694 D)
02 Jan 10 UTC
nowhere really... is there a better way to tell it?

No I haven't.

dave, was that *your* oxbridge interview? or something you heard from another?
Don Corleone (277 D)
02 Jan 10 UTC
But I am curious where you found this.
Acosmist (0 DX)
02 Jan 10 UTC
There has to be a way of telling it that doesn't give away the answer but is still sufficiently rigorous...
dave bishop (4694 D)
02 Jan 10 UTC
My older brother's friend was given it in his interview.
He told my bro, who told me to see if I could get it... I'm proud to say I could because its a very good riddle I think.
Don Corleone (277 D)
02 Jan 10 UTC
Do you think this gives away too much, or isn't rigorous enough? There are a few assumptions that must still be made (e.g. arbitrary subsection of rope burns the same speed in both directions)
Acosmist (0 DX)
02 Jan 10 UTC
It's not rigorous enough...do you see it?
dave bishop (4694 D)
02 Jan 10 UTC
Can you say your way?
bbdaniels (461 D(B))
02 Jan 10 UTC
Don C.: Not so. The subsections don't have to burn at the same speed in both directions; the entire rope will be consumed, no matter where.
Acosmist (0 DX)
02 Jan 10 UTC
I don't know how...it's hard not to give away the answer in framing the riddle.

This:

"You know that both ropes take exactly one hour to burn."

Definitely is not consistent with the answer.
bbdaniels (461 D(B))
02 Jan 10 UTC
Acosmist: "...one hour to burn from end to end"?
Acosmist (0 DX)
02 Jan 10 UTC
bbd - I think that works. I'm having trouble saying "if you light one end it will take an hour to burn to the other end" because that clearly gives away too much, right? I think what you said is exactly what's needed. It would take a pedant to question that. All right, that's good.
dave bishop (4694 D)
02 Jan 10 UTC
I thought of saying "end to end"... in fact I wrote and deleted it. I just think it emphasizes that you burn one end normally...
Saying it burns the same speed in both directions is a complete giveaway.

I haven't read the thread, lest somebody else has it, but here's the solution:

Set fire to one end of rope A, and both ends of rope B. When rope B is burnt out, after 30 mins, rope A is half burnt, so set fire to its not-on-fire end and then when it burns out, you're finished.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
02 Jan 10 UTC
Ah yes, somebody had got it.
Maniac (189 D(B))
02 Jan 10 UTC
So how, in real life would you (a) set fire to two ends of one rope and one end of the other rope at exactly the same time and (b) how would you determine exactly when rope A (the one burning from both ends) has completely burnt. It may be that the surface has completely burnt which fools you into thinking half an hour has expired.

TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
02 Jan 10 UTC
(a) make a circle of one rope, and then make the other rope have one end touching the circle and set fire to the point of intersection.
(b) When the fire stops, it is fully burnt. You can use a test for CO2 to work that out.
Maniac (189 D(B))
03 Jan 10 UTC
The only tools we have is a lighting device, how do we test for CO2?
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
03 Jan 10 UTC
As I said, I didn't properly read the thread.

In which case we just watch and judge by looking for the last flame.
Paulsalomon27 (731 D)

how about 3 such ropes and 52.5? not that hard. any other interest extension problems? seems you can only bisect a timeable interval and potentially add or subtract intervals.
Paulsalomon27 (731 D)
03 Jan 10 UTC
or 3 such ropes and 67.5 minutes. I guess maybe thats harder.
flashman (2274 D(G))
03 Jan 10 UTC
I have heard the problem before (read it) and I therefore have doubts as to whether it would have been used in an interview... Mind you, it was Oxford you say? ; )

The puzzle is a good one but the idea of the interview seems apochryphal to me.
Centurian (3257 D)
03 Jan 10 UTC
You can't say it doesn't burn at a constant rate, because it isn't constant then the answer isn't necessarily correct.

You could say: There are two ways you can use these tools to measure exactly 45 minutes, one is just waiting for one rope to burn 3/4 of the way. What is the other?

Is that better?
