New low tension game
Hello everyone, I had started a game to help teach a few friends about the wonderful world of Diplomacy but unfortunately 2 had to drop out and now we need two people who are willing to take their place in a low stakes, low pressure game.

The game's name is "Eat a crocodile!" and the password is "omlette" (yes, a mispelling of the word omelette)

Especially in Wisconsin LIVE
I think the forecasted eight to twelve inches of snow, and near certain cancellation of school for me tomorrow dictates celebration. Anyone interested in a public press, WTA live game not anonymous? Let me know before I make the link. What pot size do you think would be good?

Is there a way we can get a game pause?
In our game, gameID=16391, we have some suspect players, and we'd like our game paused until the situation can be resolved. Four of us have voted for the pause already. Thank you

Optional Rule -- Strategic Focus
I don't know if anyone else has implemented an optional rule like this, but it occurred to me the other day while perusing the rules of Diplomacy. I call this rule Strategic Focus, and it essentially gives a +1 to a unit of your choosing anywhere on the board.

These religon threads got me thinking
How would I tell my parents ( super religous conservitives)
I don't believe in God?

You wouldn't tell them; ideally you'd believe in God. So my advice is to commence believing in God.
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
07 Dec 09 UTC
Do they need to know? Maybe if they're making you really uncomfortable, making you go to Church or something, and you need to tell them, but otherwise let sleeping dogs lie imo
denis (864 D)

I have to well thought out conclusion that God doesn't exist. That Mary was fucked by anonymous and covered it up to avoid her death. That we got here by evelution. I have continued to attend church for the morals not the rituals and when you are a russian orthodox chrostian ritual is hard to avoid. So advice would be nice
denis (864 D)
07 Dec 09 UTC
Oh kestas it's every sunday for a 2 hour service
plus special religous holidays.
spyman (424 D(G))
07 Dec 09 UTC
Tell them that you have become a Hare Krishna or that you have joined some extreme muslim sect (or whichever religion would worry them most). Then in a couple of weeks time tell them you have questioned your faith and decided to become an atheist. They will be so relieved that you are not about to join a cult that they accept your lack of belief.
Acosmist (0 DX)
07 Dec 09 UTC
So you believe that there was a person named Mary who got pregnant but not with her husband Joseph...to that point, you're a believer...but then you have to posit a different explanation for that.

Why not go whole-hog?
denis (864 D)
07 Dec 09 UTC
Okay I belive that Jesus exsisted because of the large evidence but I don't belive that god impreganated her.
And spyman I'm only a teenager so jining a cult isn't really a possibilty
spyman (424 D(G))
07 Dec 09 UTC
That's okay Denis lot's of kids your age join cults. It would only have to be for a few weeks ;)

And uh what is incompatible between evolution and Christianity anyway
denis (864 D)
07 Dec 09 UTC
Okay acomist I get it you disagree and it's incompatible depending on your interpretation of the bible.
Anyway the point is that I just want advice on how to break it to them. Slowly, eventual process, or...
Acosmist (0 DX)
07 Dec 09 UTC
I gave you well-founded advice. If you stop believing P, you will not be presented with the difficult problem of telling your parents that you believe P. I cut the Gordian knot here; you're welcome.
MurphyDog (100 D)
07 Dec 09 UTC
Humour them for a while, it doesn't hurt too much. If you reject their beliefs too quickly they will assume you are just being a rebellious teenager. But start to come up with some good evidence and arguments for what you believe in.

Then gently over time let them know that while you respect their beliefs and right to believe, you would like them to respect you beliefs. Try not to get into an argument, its very easy for adults to dismiss teenagers as just being difficult or emotional. Calm and rational will work far better.

Denis, take it in steps, 1st- you say you are not a very religious person by nature but you like the church for the sense of community and morals blah blah etc etc , then wait 6 months, say you like church but you are really busy these days etc etc, then wait a year, next can come the "im not sure about all that they say" and that you are a non practicing Christian then much later you can hit them with the truth, soften them up first, move the topic forward, dont go from good choir boy to homo-erotic pill popping SM atheist freakboy who talks about " some guy fucking mary" overnight.
denis (864 D)
07 Dec 09 UTC
I know Sean I won't. I really do go to church and haven't had this arguement because of the fact that I like people at my church and the moralsthe church teaches. It's just everything else that's the problem. Plus being an "orthodox Christian" Icons give me a laugh and especially ones that "miricaly"release myrh. If you would look into orthodox Christianity you would see how ritualistic and that is my problem
Acosmist (0 DX)
07 Dec 09 UTC
Maybe you should read Religion Within the Bounds of Mere Reason.
denis (864 D)
07 Dec 09 UTC
What does that book argue?
denis (864 D)
07 Dec 09 UTC
And acosmist what is your problem with me?
Acosmist (0 DX)
07 Dec 09 UTC
In short, that rituals can be a hindrance to true religion.
denis (864 D)
07 Dec 09 UTC
And true religon is... Morals? Or god?
Acosmist (0 DX)
07 Dec 09 UTC
Obedience to the moral law and hope for the perfection of the world via divine grace.
denis (864 D)
07 Dec 09 UTC
Simply said
be good and hope god doesn't screw you over?
Acosmist (0 DX)
07 Dec 09 UTC
The author believes that the very existence of the moral law means that humankind is perfectible, because it would be perverse to be commanded to do something without any ultimate cosmic significance. But the human will is limited in efficacy. It needs the divine will to supplement it, so that the law of nature and the moral law can harmonize. Thus, the very existence of morality requires the existence of a grace-dispensing God.
denis (864 D)

I don't care if you beleive or not if that's your thing great I won't impose my beliefs on others and that is what you are trying to do...
Are you a missionary or preacher/ pastor preist?
Acosmist (0 DX)
07 Dec 09 UTC
I'm trying to impose my beliefs in the same way that anyone arguing the objective validity of a point is imposing his correct view on you by arguing. :/ Are you afraid of arguing?

I am none of those.
denis (864 D)
07 Dec 09 UTC
I sent that last message before I read yours. Also why can't I individually hold it true that following my established morals is good and cones from myself not a god. And if I do something wrong I did it with a purpose not a demon set the wrong doing into my mind
denis (864 D)
07 Dec 09 UTC
I love arguement but I think that when it comes to the large picture people should just go with the flow and do what they think is right.
PS I love a good arguement
Acosmist (0 DX)
07 Dec 09 UTC
Well, why don't you read this book that argues very coherently that morality implies God and perhaps you will see things differently <_<

It's by Immanuel Kant, btw, if that name means anything. This isn't some two-bit theologian.
Draugnar (0 DX)
07 Dec 09 UTC
@denis - your limited experience through a single organized religion of all of maybe 4 or 5 years (the first 10 of your life don't count in this regard) hardly makes you an expert on faith, Christianity, or the existence of God. Oh, and please, improve your grammar and spelling else the powers that be may not let you graduate from high school and you *won't* get into a real college in the states).
Shafto (138 D)
07 Dec 09 UTC
Denis, wait umtil you're a little older to tell them. You're 15 and they will think you're just having a teenage strop. I don't believe in god and I've found an inner peace in that. If god does exist, why did he create me to go to hell, better that I was never born qed...god, if he exists, is one evil person.
jasoncollins (186 D)
07 Dec 09 UTC
My suggestion is that as Draugnar said, you're a little young to decide for sure what you do/don't believe - there are many things out there and many perspectives on the issue. If i were you i'd first realise that it wasn't that i definitely didn't believe in something - but rather that i felt i was unsure. Talking to your parents/church about you being unsure about something would cause a lot less problems surely? And who knows - you might clarify some of the issues as to why you don't believe in the first place.
