I've noticed a trend in posting announcements of births, deaths, birthdays etc on here, so thought we could keep them all together here?

Irritating move in gunboat game
Hello to all Diplomacy-Experts,
please have a look to the game gameID=15723 and the Turkish support for the italian convoy in 1903. Is this a normal move? Could Turkey anticipate this?
Thanks a lot for your comments.

You obviously didn't get a very good education, denis.

Your post is badly punctuated, you wrote "hear" instead of "here", and doesn't make any sense.

What do you mean "Education is the thirties" ? This sentence appears to make no sense.
gjdip (1060 D)

Jamie, don't forget that denis might not be a native English speaker.

"Education is the thirties" - it makes perfect sense, he means that education is a thing of the past, not popular any more. So much time has passed, but maybe, and here's me just interpretting a bit, he also subtly means that Education's time will come again, the next set of 30s is just over 20 years away!

that will be in most of our life-times.

Okay first of all puncuation at like 12 o'clock at night? I have stated numerous times my spelling and typing and puncuation is bad. No English was not te first language I learened to write or speak and yes I'm from California

What i mean is I need to do a project on Peogressive education and education in the 1930's
orathaic (1009 D(B))
30 Nov 09 UTC
i've never heard of the term 'progressive education' is it some american thing?

I have read recently that statistics should be thought as a problem solving skill rather than a branch of mathematics. There is a german programme encouraging understanding basic probabilities for 8 year olds, it seems really good.
Invictus (240 D)
30 Nov 09 UTC
It being midnight doesn't mean you don't have to follow punctuation rules.

How on Earth did you get stuck with such an awful project? Education in the 1930s just might be the least interesting subject for a report I've ever heard of. Good grief that's terrible!
DominicHJ (100 D)
30 Nov 09 UTC
Agreed. Horrible, horrible subject. Wouldn't want to study whatever you're in! ;)

Man, gotta finish my own, now... "For what reasons is the federal government encroaching into my home town?", pretty much. :P
denis (864 D)
30 Nov 09 UTC
okay well Its a class project on Society of the thirties and i wanted to get Foriegn Policy and I got stuck witht this because some guy think WW2 was in the thirties?!?!?!?!!?!? probably doesn'tmake any sense to you but anyway I'm stuck with it!

Denis,

This book is about the history of education in the United States, but deals more with pre-1930s history. Still, it might be a good place to start:

http://www.johntaylorgatto.com/chapters/index.htm

Also, this is the way the "Flag Salute" was done in government schools back in those days:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bellamy_salute
denis (864 D)
30 Nov 09 UTC
thank fucking god I needed to cite a book on the subject
Invictus (240 D)
30 Nov 09 UTC
How old are you then, denis? I stopped getting assigned my topics for big projects like this in middle school.

God, what an awful subject.
Invictus is wrong, there is a lot of interesting topics that can be found in the history of eduction for the 1930s. (Also you are wrong: WW2 did start in the 30s, 1939 for most major combatants, earlier than that for China and Japan, and depending on how you define "the 30s" it can include all of 1940).

Anyways, there is so much out there, that I am hesitate to recommend anything for fear of driving too deep too soon. I assume this is a high school assignment? Do you want to do an overview, or something more focussed?
denis (864 D)
30 Nov 09 UTC
This project is about the US particulary and I know it started in 39. High school Invictus and its aweful
denis (864 D)
30 Nov 09 UTC
Overview so thats a powerpoint ( easy since its a visual) and a 9 pages of Reaserch ( meh) and 5 min presentation ( i have a problem condensing info and my powerpoint is getting to the 10 slides and i only have 4 pages of reaserch done)
Invictus (240 D)
30 Nov 09 UTC
Most school history classes are awful. When they teach the Civil War they teach about how hard it was for Southern women at home rather than, you know, battles or the actions of leaders like Lincoln of Davis. When they teach World War II it's all about homefront industries and rationing and almost nothing about, well, battle and the actions of people like Hitler or Stalin or Roosevelt or Churchill. And the first half of the year is spent on tinpot Indian cultures and white guilt so the kids are lucky if they get to the Cold War, let alone a fair description of Vietnam or the collapse of communism, both far more important historical events than Cahokia mound builders.

I love history, but history classes until I was taking AP ones in high school were terrible. They give you bullshit assignments like education in the 30s instead of actual substantive topics.

are you a teacher? cause you said " the kids"
Invictus (240 D)
30 Nov 09 UTC
No, I'm in college. I'm actually in a class on the history of the common law. Right now we're reading about the development of law school in the United States and the history of the large law firm. Dull, dull stuff, but still not as mind numbing as what I dealt with before.
denis (864 D)
30 Nov 09 UTC
once we did a project on the clases system of the south during the civil war?!?! um what class system all the men are gone making a difference
Denis:
I don’t know how much time you have available for this. If you have a lot of time, the main text on this period is Lawrence A Cremin,” The Transformation of the School: Progressivism in American Education, 1876-1957.” However it is quite old. You can supplement it with material from David Tyack and possibly Carl Kaestle (I might be misremembering his focus). Joel Spring and Diane Ravitch both have written broad surveys of American Education which will have interesting chapters for your era. There is also a more recent one by Wayne Urban and another author.

If you have trouble getting exact titles, let me know and I can dig them up for you.
denis (864 D)

No time at all for any of that I have enough info and Tolstoy's book is really helping I just wanted to see if any of you were 1930's education buffs

As a product of the same California government school curriculum you're enduring, I was also forced to read TKAM (I graduated from high school in the mid '90s). And progressive educational theories and practices of the '30s are almost as irrelevant to our lives today as the plight of women living in the Confederacy during the Civil War (I think Invictus may've been reading a later edition of the same textbook I was forced to read). This paper you're writing is pointless busywork. The only purpose of exercises like this is to prepare you for your future as a corporate cubicle drone, where you'll be forced to write similarly pointless papers and presentations for the rest of your useful working life.

Have fun!
