Anyone here knowledgable about statistics?
Normally I would try to find an forum that specilizes in this subject but I haven't been too sucessful finding an active forum that I can post too (the few I can find are restricted to invited members only). I tend to find that there's a lot of smart educated people on this site so I thought I might try my luck here.

I've developed a Win32 taskbar application that monitors webDiplomacy to notify the user when a status change occurs in a game, by changing the icon in the taskbar, depending on the type of notification.

Put in your orders!
I hate having to have to say this, but when you have a game where you have no orders: PUT SOME ORDERS IN! Don't finalize them unless you are sure, but ALWAYS have orders in. That way you don't NMR even when you are active. I've been in one too many games where my ally was going to enter in orders late when he had a chance only to get busy and miss the end of the turn. Don't let it happen to you! Always put in orders! Having two red "!!"'s should be an alert to you to put in orders!

20,000 people convert to Islam each year.

I read in a book that my own muslim parents gave me, and it said that Islam is going to be the only religion soon. It said that EVERY year, 20,000 people convert to Islam.
I googled about it a bit, and I found something cool...

America has a population of 300,000,000 people. 20,000 people is about 0.00006667%.

In the years between 1990 and 2008, 19 million people lost their faith. Which is about 1,000,000 people every year.

That islamic statistic was the biggest piece of religious propaganda I've ever seen. But it was also very amusing and informative since I did some research after reading it. I just wanted to see if anyone else has seen or heard of any other big kinds of religious propaganda?
How many people convert FROM Islam each year?
amonkeyperson (100 D)

I tried getting that, but I couldn't find it. It's always a site about converting TOO islam.

Also, if there are people that convert from islam, they're probably going into another religion, other than atheism.

Ok so apostates were killed or put in a prison until they except Islam.
Nowadays, (especially in Nigeria) people have re-introduced Sharia courts, and without giving much attention to evidence, stone people for Apostasy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_law#Contemporary_practice
But in Africa, 6 million people convert into Christianity every year. They aren’t being executed. http://www.formermuslims.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=972
And plus, in first world countries, this stuff wouldn't happen, or would at least not happen without the government coming in and trying to stop it.

Afghanistan: Christian Convert Faces Execution

PRAGUE, March 21, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- Some 15 years ago, Abdul Rahman made a decision that may now cost him his life.

While working for an international Christian aid organization helping Afghan refugees in Pakistan, he abandoned Islam and became a Christian.

On his return to Afghanistan from Germany in 2002, 41-year-old Abdul Rahman told his relatives about his faith.

And it is they who reportedly denounced him to authorities in February. When police arrived to arrest and charge him with rejecting Islam, they found him carrying a Bible.

Yea that movie is really great, it says it only targets the radical minority of Islam, but there is no fine line between the two types. Most Muslims have some of the attributes described, but not all of them. Which makes it harder to detect them.

@ kivan26

Actually, Gaddafi doesn't punish people for conversion from Islam, although Chomeini did.

What good have the mono-theostic (Christianity, Judeism, Islam) religions done for the world, all throughout history? We all know what evil they have done (caused about 80% of all wars, crusades, inquisitions, St Bartholomew's Night, witch trials, etc etc no need to go on and on and on...) but can anyone really tell me what beneficial influence religion has ever had, on a social (i.e. more than individual or small groups) level??
I for one cannot think of a single positive effect of religion. Human kindness existed well before religion and atheism has always been suppressed and vilified - quite unjustly I feel, by organized religion.
So we have no after-life (us atheists....), whether replete with buxom virgins, fluffy clouds with angels, lambs and a kindly old man as our personal butler, etc,., etc.; - Who cares! It doesn't exist anyway!

I thought Christianity was the fastest growing religion worldwide. Anyone got numbers?
Synalon Etuul (141 D)
17 Aug 09 UTC
Pantalone, I am also an atheist, and I also think that the world would be better without religion; however, I think that thousands of years ago religious institutions helped to build ideas of morality, laws, even a desire to ask and answer questions about what we don't understand. We no longer need religion and it holds us back, but to say that it has done no good for the world would be a lie. Even now some people are turned from theft and murder by the 'word of God', and surely this is a good thing?

Do all of those converts balance off the honour killings?
"Human kindness existed well before religion"

I'm not sure this is true. When first man saw lightning, how did he explain it? It may not have been an organized religion, but seeing power in nature, and believing it was something to be feared/worshipped/appeased/etc was probably the norm for the earliest man. That IS religion, whether we today would recognize it as such.
vamosrammstein (757 D(B))
17 Aug 09 UTC
The issue with organized religion is it becomes a double edged sword. Both of my parents are strong christians, but one is a baptist who would exterminate all muslims if he had the chance, and the other is an episcopalian who would turn herself inside out trying to help someone, (anybody really). Both of them are that way due to their religion, and how they interpret it.
Like everything else, religion has very strong pros, and very strong cons as well, and the neverending question is whether or not the pros outweigh the cons.
amonkeyperson (100 D)
17 Aug 09 UTC
I agree with Synalon, We needed something like religion to slingshot us into many different things. Science, morals, philosophy, math etc etc. I won’t deny that. But I'm sure the majority of people would say that Religion is sending us to an asymptotic barrier that we need to get past. Like DBJ said, the things we didn't understand were practically the basis of all religions. But now, when we have found another language to understand the universe in (math), a second reason why a guy might get struck by lightning, it's automatically pushed aside, because it goes against what you already believe. There's a word for that right? Deliberately not listening to new and different things...

One of the primary supporters of charities whether for third world countries or the porr here at home are religious insititutions. I'm Lutheran and the number of organizations our church, our synod, and the national organization support and at what level that support is provided most definitely do plenty of good. Add to that the number of missionaries we send out into the world. Yes, they teach Christianity, but they also help build homes in Belize with real floors and provide shoes to the children as diseases from dirt floors and barefeet run rampant in the backcountry there. Thrivent Lutheran Financial Services provide assistance to families at home in need, no matter what their religious affiliation, if any.

The Catholics (historically at odds with Lutherans and Lutheranism, but coming back together in the last half century) also do some tremendous charitable work, especially for the poor and downtrodden right here at home.

@AMP - I think it is called obstinance or closed-mindedness or maybe obstinant closed-mindedness. I just call it willful ignorance.

What are players thoughts on further penalizing those players who go “CD”? Players that go CD are just as bad as ‘multi-players’ (and in many instances are one in the same). Would it keep players from joining games they were unwilling to finish?
