A wee rant about pauses
I know people are not obliged to give you a pause, but the experience of the last week has still left me annoyed.

Just for the record, I am currently of the view that I will never give anyone a pause, ever again.

I was playing in four games and needed to go away for a few days. I gave everyone in all four games at least three days' notice that I would be needing a pause, along with a reminder the day before I went away.

Did I get a pause in ANY of those four games? Did I fuck.

In one game all the players voted for a pause - except one, who deliberately and shamelessly refused to pause just so that he could attack me while I was away.

In all four games I was polite, I explained why I needed a pause, and I gave people plenty of advance notice. Yet still not a single game gave me a pause.

So just to give everyone fair warning - if you see me in your game, you'd better not need a pause, because you won't get one.

I know I'm probably being a bit of a Draugma Queen here, and in time my view might soften, but I'm feeling very pissed off right now.

hey in tea parties the phase changed, and your pause vote was gone, all the rest voted, but without your vote the gmae didnt pause.
Just an FYI cause i saw it happen

Hey Jamie... What is a Draugma Queen? Was that just a typo, or did I miss the rename attacking afte rmy recent med adjustment issues (I'm doing fine now, thanks for asking). If the later, that's cool. I earned, but I would remind everyone that I don't wear women's clothing, and my wife says I'm the King, so that would be Draugma King to you all. :-)

Jamiet99uk, don't let people drag you down to their level if you don't like them or what they do. Next time, get a sitter.

@ Draugnar: Yeah sorry I was taking the piss. No offence meant, my friend.
Pauses are very hard to coordinate now that they have to be done in the same phase. We had a similar sitution in one game - everyone voted, but it was spread over two phases, so the guy who needed the pause was gone and couldn't vote. Luckily we were able to get a helpful mod to pause it for us. Perhaps the same thing happened in one or more of your games.
Xapi (194 D)

Really Jamie, you do sound like a Draugma queen. In the end, I think you're just Draugning in a glass of water, and as gjdip says, you shouldn't let people Draug you down to their level.

In the end, perhaps the best way to solve your problems is to enter games only with people you know, that way you won't be so affected by the luck of the Draug, so to speak.
I don't think Jamie came up with "Draug Queen". There was a lengthy thread about it. Not sure who coined it though.

Diplofool and Draug Queen? I better add that to the urban dictionary...
fortknox (2059 D)

Whoever didn't pause is an ass and should be outed... pauses are part of the game...
I disagree Fortknox. While I will always grant a pause, they are most definitely NOT a part of the game. They are granted as a courtesy, not a right.
That's the main problem with a pause vote only lasting a turn. Not always is someone being an ass but sometimes people go through a hectic time and miss a turn themselves and they might've been the deciding pause.
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Aug 09 UTC
Let's see, I've coined three phraes (Diplofool, Cirmes Against Diplomacy, and Depth Charge) and become the target of one (which is fair considering the way I acted). I'd say I'm still doing OK on the balance sheets. Besides, the narcissist in me knows there is no such thing as bad press (so long as it doesn't get you banned).

Alright, my choice of 'part of the game' may have been off, but I want to play a game fairly... agreeing to not pause means possible NMR's and CD's... both of which ruin the fairness of any game.
Onar (131 D)
03 Aug 09 UTC
And fairness is important? Some would disagree with that sentiment. (read: multi-accounters).
Draugnar (0 DX)

So, here's Rommel at Mount Matajur and the Italian's ask him to wait because one of them is getting married that weekend. You think he should wait? Maybe the Japanese shouldn't have attacked Pearl Harbor because they knew our boys would be sleeping in on a Sunday. You do what it takes to win and your enemy does the same.
djbent (2572 D(S))
03 Aug 09 UTC
@draug - that's not the correct comparison. you do what it takes to win *in game* - not pausing, or multi-accounting, or hacking the site don't fall within that.
Onar (131 D)
03 Aug 09 UTC
That all falls under the blanket of meta-gaming, doesn't it? Definitley the frowned-upon kind, at that.
Onar,
Are you saying not pausing is metagaming?
(because if you are, I would strongly disagree with your definition)
Xapi (194 D)
03 Aug 09 UTC
It is metagaming if, as Draugnar put it , you do it to gain an advantage over your rival.
If I see my rival hasn't put in moves and hasn't asked for a pause, should I hold all my units until he returns?
Onar (131 D)
03 Aug 09 UTC
There's a difference, though: If he has asked for a pause, you're being a jerk. If he hasn't, then he is, and feel free to attack him at will.
I agree that not granting a pause is 'being a jerk'. I don't agree its metagaming.
Xapi (194 D)
03 Aug 09 UTC
It's metagaming if your reasons not to grant it are based on your position in the game regarding the absent player.
djbent (2572 D(S))
03 Aug 09 UTC
@DJ - obviously not. but if he *has* and with ample time, why would you not vote for it? what possible reason is there besides
a) being a jerkface
b) trying to use it (out of game factor) to gain an advantage

if you think it's a valid tactic to not pause, and press the attack, when someone has requested it, then you should also be a big fan of CDs and NMRs. but to me, when someone goes CD or NMR, it ruins the game, even if it actually benefits my position.
StevenC. (1047 D(B))
03 Aug 09 UTC
Wow Onar, but being a jerk is your specialty. But it is free supply centers if the person just left without giving any notice of pause. Just look at the game wippet race, France was a powerful country and then went CD so Germany and England took France apart while still fighting each other.

http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=11936
Again, as I have said in every post, I agree it is being a jerk. As I've also said, I always grant pauses. That being said, not granting a pause is not illegal and I don't believe it is metagaming.

If I didn't grant a pause and took advantage of someone not putting in moves, its not ME who is metagaming (letting something outside the game affect my game play), it is the person who didn't enter moves, letting real life affect their moves (or lack thereof).

Is it wrong for me to warn 2 of my opponents (with 3 hours to go in a phase) that I'm going to do 'x' this turn, but I know that one of my opponents is in my time zone and the other is in Europe, and the European is probably sleeping? I am letting something outside the game (the Europeans location) affect my play. Is that wrong?
djbent (2572 D(S))
03 Aug 09 UTC
@DJ i think we agree and are just arguing about semantics. choosing who you tell what when is not about outside factors, from my perspective. in any case, i think it's more of a "name and shame" thing, obviously there will never be a rule forcing people to pause. but i'd like to know who doesn't pause, so i could avoid games with them in the future.

I'm still new to the site, so I noticed that if orders are submitted there's a gray check next to your name but only when its finalized does it turn green. If the turn expires without submitted moves being finalized, are the orders followed?

idea for improvement
I would really like to see a clean map at the end of each season in addition to the board which shows everyone's moves with arrows and explosions and whatnot. By a "clean map" I mean a map that shows where every piece has moved to without the indicators of how it got there/which supports succeeded or were cut. I find that trying to plan the next season's moves is quite obnoxious with all of the arrows and other icons shooting off everywhere. Thank you much.
