Question about time limits
I am new to phpDiplomacy and have been playing my first game which has fast (9 hour) time limits per phase. However, I have noticed that the time limits seem to randomly change from phase to phase. I am guessing that the program aborts the time limit and moves to next phase if everyone (not currently in civil disorder) has finalized their orders or have no orders to give. Correct? This makes it hard to plan your times for logging on and entering next orders.

Telling Afghans how to treat women
Should we only impose democracy on countries that can be trusted to follow politically correct policies?

I don't know. However, even suggesting the possibility of "imposing" something sounds rather threatening! If I remember, democracy is usually imposed by force. You aren't threatening force are you? Or even publicly discussing assault?

Granted I'm not an expert, but I think that just might be illegal. I am going to report this to the proper authorities, at which point I am sure they will spend their time determining with their expertise what sort of horrendous internet-crime you have committed here, Maniac!
Invictus (240 D)

We cannot impose democracies. If we could, sure let's do it, but it's not really possible.

Iraq seems to be getting better and could very well become a full out democracy, but I think that more of a result of the Iraqi people getting sick of the violence. You could argue we sped the process up by taking out Saddam, but little else.

The fact of the matter is that you can only attempt to impose a new form of government by force, because the old government wishes to not be deposed. And realistically, look at how many times we've tried. Vietnam, North Korea, Afghanistan, Iran, Somalia, and Iraq are not very happy with us at the moment.
Savlian (100 D)

We, being the U.S. I'm sorry, I keep forgetting about the sites international community. The United States has had a poor record, but internally imposed regime changes have a better chance of succeeding once put into place.

Invictus is right. How do you impose something that only works if the people are willing particapents?
Maniac (189 D(B))

This thread wasn't supposed to be about whether imposing democracy was good / bad or even acheivable. I confess I worded my opening staements poorly.

After 'helping the Afghans' on the road to democracy, we [NATO] have recently put presssure on the elected government to change a law which they passed - the right of men to forcibly have sex with their wives (unless their wives are ill).

Now don't get me wrong I think it is a terrible law, but democracy should be laws made for the people by the people. If NATO can veto any laws they don't like then they are denying democracy not advancing it.

This posses a dilema - do we want equal rights for women in Afghanistan or Democracy? It seems we can't have both.

@trim101 - the Afghan Ministry of Justice has confirmed that Karsai sign the bill making it law in March 2009.

The law is reported to have been approved by President Karzai - who critics say is eager to win Shia votes in forthcoming elections - but the final version has not yet been made public because there are numerous amendments to it. http://news.bbc.co.uk/nol/ukfs_news/hi/newsid_7980000/newsid_7983000/7983081.stm

Maniac (189 D(B))

Thanks for that trim, but the fact remains that NATO are trying to interfer with the democatic process of Afghanistan. The dillema remains 'do we want equal rights for women in Afghanistan or Democracy?'

@Ghost - seems to sum our policy up pretty well

Maniac (189 D(B))

@Sceptic_ka - and if they ignor us should we respect their decission? We [UK] only made rape within marriage a criminal offence in 1991. Do we have the right to tell other countries what they are doing is shit when we were doing the same shit so recently?
Denzel73 (100 D)

Women have the right to vote for only about a century in the West, starting with Scandinavia...
No, I don't think anyone has any right to impose any laws on anyone, unless they want to admit to the fact that they are simply an occupying force.
My country, Croatia, is a part of that occupation, and here, rape in marriage has been made illegal in 1999. Hitting a wife is illegal since 2003. Let's just be patient with Afgans, should we not?
Invictus (240 D)

"The imposing your sense of right and wrong on other cultures violates the pime directive."

That's terrific.

Just a little history correction, Denzel73. Women could vote in some states and territories in the western US as far back as the 1880s, mostly because brothels had such big pull there.

What gives the west the right to decide what is right and and what is wrong?
amonkeyperson (100 D)

A long time ago, a couple people decided whats 'right'. And that wasn't based on religious views, it was based upon weather or not they would like that to happen to themselves. Then it got backed by religious views to stop too many people from crying out against it. Those rules evolved into the many complex rules and laws we have today.
But what if we were wrong?
What if 'God' (if there is one) intended it to be different?
There was this one guy who told everyone to be nice, respect other, not to lie, blah blah blah. most of you call him jesus. then there was this other kid named Muhammed, and he had sort of the same values, but it only said that everyone is equal. When he said that, he meant, Men that own land have equal rights. then it went to just All men have the same rights. Women don't. Who are we to say that thier beliefs are wrong? Couldn't we be wrong?
"A long time ago, a couple people decided whats 'right'. And that wasn't based on religious views,"

I'm not sure which couple you are referring to. But early right and wrong was based on he with the most might is right. If you have a meat, or a woman, and I want it, and I'm stronger, I'm gong to take it.

Morality exists to grease the bearings of social co-operation.

This is a tough question. I'm inclined to say that no we do not have the right to impose our moralities upon them, but at the same time I feel terribly repulsed by the idea that we sit idly by while they legislate intra-marriage rape.

can anyone give me an example of the US imposing democracy and succeeding?
amonkeyperson (100 D)
05 Apr 09 UTC
Side 1: Step in their shoes.
And they are also exceedingly sickened by us giving right to women, giving woman the oppurtunity to make themselves better then men. In thier eyes, this horrible. And both ways, the feelings are the same, even though the values are different.
We can't tell them not to do something because we don't like it. Same way we don't want them to change our ways. This isn't "A long time ago" anymore. We're bigger, but that still shouldn't mean that we should stop them from doing what they wanna do. They might attack us and try to get us to change, and in our eyes, this is wrong, but we did the same thing. Shock and Awe. We killed EVERYTHING. Because we thought we were right and they were wrong, so we had to put them down. We see 9/11 as a terrorist attack, I see it as an attack of war. You can't have war without attacking each other. We call this terrorism because we want to spread nationalism, and they do the same. They go up on their TVs and tell everyone that americans are scumbags (half way true), but thats another story for another post.

All in all, this isn't really a side, its just more like the title, step in their shoes. We're both doing the same thing, but in slightly different ways and in different langauges.

Side 2: Drop the God bomb, or the Holocaust, or any other kind of genocide. Its gonna be a bitch to go against.

The main idea for this side is, that while we probably shouldn't impose things on other people, should we really sit idly while a group of people, or groupS of people are being stripped of their natural human rights?

Before we went into the middle east, it wouldn't be uncomman for 10 headless bodies to show up one morning on the street. We prevent this from happening all the time.

Last time something like this happened, we came in and stopped millions more people from dying innocents deaths. This is the holocaust of course. What would have happened if we didn't go into the war, and help stop the Nazis? Thats right, they would've grown so powerful that they would rule for 100 years like Hitler promised. We bitch slapped them down before they could get too much power. We should do the same with these guys. People can't control who's vagina to come out of, so when these girls were born into a world where they knew nothing but housework, cleaning, taking care of the kids, pleasing your husband, and constant reproduction. To the men over there, they're like baby machines. How cruel is that? Don't you want to put an end to that?

Almsot everything their doing over there is morally wrong, unethical, and inhumane. Being the bigger country is like being the bigger brother. You help the little ones to be good people when they get older. Teach them right from wrong. We should do this anyway we can, and one way we can do this, is through brute force.

In game Phase 10, I just sent Bohemia to Munich supported by Kiel and Ruhr. Austria sent Munich back at Bohemia supported by Silesia. Nobody cut anybody's support, but for some reason, my 3 bounced with his 2. This makes no sense; it must have been a bug. Admins, can you fix it? Thanks.

I just read in the development forums that the gamemaster is supposed to Private Message you at the end of the game with the game conclusion.

I don't read the forum much - way to difficult UI, and way too many political discussions - but is that really implemented? I see no way to send/receive Private Messages.
