Diplomacy Update?
When will the update occur which allows us to support convoyed armies. This is a critical aspect of the game and definately affects the way I play (In some cases it limits my success.) Let me know

What is up with people talking out of character in games?
What is up with people talking out of character in games? This is Diplomacy. Press is part of the game. No need for comments like "I'm not an idiot, I've won DipCons" and "please only send messages when you know what you are doing."

Press is a vital part of the game, to say that people shouldn't be communicating, in character, is laughable.

Where did Diplomacy get its name.
Why is Diplomacy called "Diplomacy" when the entire game is based around war. There is a board game, "Settlers of Catan" which focuses entirely on economics and bartering with resoures. That game has the same merit to be called Diplomacy as "Diplomacy" or "Axis and Allies."

I am curious of alternate (logical) names for this game.

Possible bug in "The Politics"
I am Russia in our game, The Politics, and I posted a move that did not occur correctly. I supported my fleet into Constantinople, and Austria moved his armies so there could only have been one support. At a minimum neither of us should have had any units there, or if he did not support the move into Con. then I would have taken it. Please advise?

Sat 02 AM Spring 1904, Diplomacy: Your army at Ankara successfully supported the fleet at Black Sea move to Constantinople.
Sat 02 AM Spring 1904, Diplomacy: Your fleet at Black Sea moving into Constantinople recieved move support from the army at Ankara.
Sat 02 AM Spring 1904, Diplomacy: Your fleet at Black Sea attempted to attack the army at Constantinople, but failed.

Supporting convoy attacks?
Is it possible to support an army that attacks via a convoy? If so, how is this done? In a recent game (The LO), France supported a convoyed army to Holland, but failed with the following message:

Autumn 1902, Diplomacy: Your army at Belgium's move support wasn't accepted by the unit which support was being given to.

Is there something special that needs to be done for this to work??? I would rather not try again until I am sure it is possible to do this...

Multiple Accounts?
I dont think this is such a big problem yet but in order to prevent further abuse what is being done about people making multiple accounts and making them all join one game. Since a person might control 2 characters in one game he already has a perma. alliance with themselves and can crush countries near him. Is there a 1 account per ip being enforced or anything?

This IS a big problem, it distorts the game completely... and in the name of what? This is supposedly a mean to have fun, not a test for forgery skills...
Havock (100 D)
10 Apr 07 UTC
Yeah, i only know 1 person who i think is using multiple accounts (well in a way he told me he was) but other than that :/ of course they would be hard to track. I think the 1 account per IP or MAC address should be used. I mean if they were really determined they could use emulators but best i can think of.
drzli (1114 D)
11 Apr 07 UTC
it's better to do it per mac if possible becuase most major companies use nat so you'll effectivelly ban all the people that play from work. Don't do it, man, don't make us take arms :D
dangermouse (5551 D)
11 Apr 07 UTC
There has already been an EXTENSIVE conversation on this topic, though at this point it has dropped off the end of the forum. In short, kestas stated that there would be no tieing of account to IP or MAC address. For one thing, it prevents a player from logging in from more than one location (work, home, school, etc.).
Chrispminis (916 D)
11 Apr 07 UTC
Honestly, anyone who has to make multiple accounts to win a simple Diplomacy game is truly pathetic. There is no incentive to cheat here, you don't recieve anything for winning, there is no valid scoring system, so why do it?

For respect? Does it make you feel good about yourself? Seriously, why would you play Diplomacy if you aren't going to use any. That being said, I think it's simpler to not tie IP's. People who are victim to multiple account abusers, take in to account that while they have nothing to gain, you have nothing really to lose. So don't worry. ; )
dangermouse (5551 D)

Well, there is the prize for reaching Diplomat status. But other than that there's no reason to cheat.

aoe3rules (949 D)

Alfa (1308 D)
13 Apr 07 UTC
Well, by the time I realized it, they were the two dominant powers. There's so many things that point out they're the same person, however I'd rather not discuss what those things are publicly. Take a look at the game "Diplomat" (http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=392) and let me know what you think...
dangermouse (5551 D)

I don't see all that much. There was an incredibly trusting alliance going on between austria and turkey for a bit, but that seems to have changed. You (Italy) let a bunch of turkish fleets move through the Mediterranean early on in a rather questionable fashion.

The biggest thing I noticed was Germany's destruction. It went from dominant power to next to nothing in a few short years.
Chrispminis (916 D)
13 Apr 07 UTC
I've seen worse fate befall Germany. =\

Anyways, I don't exactly know what I am supposed to see there either. Perhaps it's more obvious to you being that you played the game and corresponded with the players, but I see nothing suspicious. All I see is quite interesting and trusting play between all players.
The Donkey (479 D)
13 Apr 07 UTC
I'd like to point out that JuniorC and KLKC registered on the same date, and always play together, except in one game. Highly suspicious, no?
Chrispminis (916 D)
13 Apr 07 UTC
I'm thinking that they're probably friends, who know each other personally.
Alfa (1308 D)
13 Apr 07 UTC
Chrispminis there's one other thing that you're missing in terms of if they're the same person.

Dangermouse, we all allied against Germany after it became a dominant power. I was in a very tight spot and really had no other good options. At that point in time I felt that they were different people, however now I'm convinced they're the same.

I for one, know that Motto and Grotto are the same person. However, being his friend, think that he should be given a warning and ban his "Motto" account.
jack937ryan (84 D)
15 Apr 07 UTC
That is a good idea. They should let him choose which acount will be banned, though.
Johnson (320 D)

In addition to a ranking system, how about a version of the blind-queue (used, for example, in Magic Online drafting). Players who want to join a game tell the site "I'm ready to play", then when there are say 15 players in this state, it selects 7 of them at random and creates a game.
This wouldn't eliminate multiple-accounts-per-player, but it would reduce the effectiveness, because there's no guarantee that your multiples would end up in the same game...
Combine that with maybe a reasonable upper-bound on accounts per IP address...Say 3 accounts per IP - how many households have more than 3 players sharing the computer? Probably less than there are annoying multi-accounters out there...
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
16 Apr 07 UTC
Future versions will have much more strict checks, requiring an e-mail address per account and looking for suspicious IPs, cookies, and identical passwords, which should all come together to make multiple accounts less appealing.

Also the score system will probably give fewer points to people who repeatedly win with the same other people.
drzli (1114 D)

"I for one, know that Motto and Grotto are the same person. However, being his friend, think that he should be given a warning and ban his "Motto" account."
ROFL, he attacked me in one game with italy and turkey. I was austria. As a result of his attack, you can see nice lines crossing names motto and grotto :>
There are people who are so blatant with abuse of multiple chars that is offends. I mean, there is a guy in a game I play that uses 2nd char to "store" supply centers for him. He doesn't respond to diplomacy, doesn't do anything, just holds territories until his main account comes and takes them. He even helps himself forming instant alliances. I'd like to leave that game since I'm sick to watch that behaviour but alas, there is no leave button. Also, your friend in his motto incarnation is there, skips turns and doesn't respond to diplomacy as usual.
Chrispminis (916 D)
16 Apr 07 UTC
Schools, internet cafes, etc. all may have more than 3 players on a single IP.

It really seems like kestas is on top of things however, and I'm really eager to see his score system implemented. Like I said earlier, a good scoring system would solve a lot of our problems.
aoe3rules (949 D)

what exactly would an "Accounts per IP" limit do? this is confusing:

at our school we have maybe 10 to 15 players, but the computers have different IPs. however, we don't use the same computer all the time, (one day i use the second computer in the back row, then the first computer in the fourth, etc) and when we use a computer that has already been used, would the system just kick us out and say "Sorry, you are the fourth player to log in on this IP. All players are now being banned." ? That would be kinda stupid.

Civil Disorder
From what I understand, the scoring system will work off the games you've finished (and possibly what you're still in). However, since players take over games in CD, it will not say how many times you went CD. This could simply be counted with a figure, but if so, I was just wondering what people thought about running the score in a field, so it can count this. This would catch people who go CD to get out of problems. However, this would need to be carefully done, because I was doing rather well in a few games, like below, where I had 14 SC's or something around that, then fell into CD.
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=560
Also, a slight note on the anti-multi front: there should be a section checking for players who take over CDs. Otherwise, people could you "substitute" a second account in for their good one, keeping stats high.

How do you attack with multiple 'armies'. Ive tried the support movement but it doesnt seem to be working. Its the third drop down menu that confuses me. If say i click an army to support move to london and another is set to move to london, should that not work?

Fast game for obsessives
"It's the waiting I can't stand!"

There must be other players, like myself, who spend most of their lives within easy reach of a computer, and consequently find themselves checking the site for updates several times a day, bemoaning those little red crosses that hold everyone up.

Please, make yourself known to me in this thread, when I get 7 names I'll set up a fast game just for us. Hopefully I can find other like-minded people determined that a turn should last no longer than 8 hours maximum (given that we all have to sleep!) and assuming we're not in opposing time zones, most turns being dealt with in less than 2 hours. Including thinking time!
