Is the premise "all men are created equal" necessary for a Western republic?
See above. I have thoughts on this but will save them for a little while later.

Please be mindful of the additional etiquette requests I am making in the next post.

webDiplomacy Mentor-Apprentice Program

Here is the webDiplomacy mentor-apprentice program you have all been waiting for!
Any questions can be directed to our email at [email protected]

To sign up as an apprentice follow this link (anyone can sign up for this):
https://goo.gl/forms/tHxJMZQ7mKgjAtEO2

To sign up as a mentor follow this link (to be a mentor your regular GR *ranking* should be over 200, categories are irrelevant):
https://goo.gl/forms/XdMDvxfxdQQQJjDI3

Here is a quick guide to being a mentor in case you are confused about the whole idea:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1dSq6zlizecb90F3OKSqyFUWGI32Or87ZNmkFmhCVz-c/edit?usp=sharing

Quick things to note:

This mentor program is NOT School of War, and you have NO obligation to help out your apprentice with every single move of every single game they have. That is a high burden and we wouldn’t ask anyone to do that. If you want to do it, then by all means go for it. But if they ask you to write down their moves for them you should decline. Obviously if they ask you about a moveset they came up with you should give feedback.

For apprentices, this is providing you with someone for you to ask technical and strategical questions to. If you are not getting responses or for some legitimate reason want another mentor, please email us.

Also, if you are over top 200 GR ranking and feel you are horrible at press or gunboat and want a mentor for that please feel free to sign up. The objective of this program is to just make better diplomacy players overall.

If you feel you are qualified to mentor despite your GR (maybe because you’re pro f2f or on another website) please sign up and send us an accompanying email

In the end it is under my discretion to decide if you are allowed to participate in this or not.

Lastly, everyone please thank CommanderByron for helping with *a lot* of the set up here. I’d probably be too lazy to do it without him :)

Thanks DO, it’s been a pleasure working with you, I’m excited to continue and excited to help make this a reality.

I also want to give DO more credit than she’ll give herself. This whole program is her idea and this conversation wouldn’t even be happening without her.

Appreciate your efforts to strengthen the webDip playing community DO and CB.

One question of clarification, please: is it not against the rules for players to seek or receive advice, or communicate about ongoing no-press (gunboat) games?

I read the guide link above, and the implication seems to be that receiving advice during ongoing games is encouraged.
chluke (12292 D(G))
14 Nov 17 UTC
It may also be worth noting that outside mentor advice during ongoing press games may externally strengthen the play of lower rated players and thus skew GR ratings, inflating lower rankings and deflating higher ranked players.

Not that this is necessarily bad, it should just be recognized as a likely side affect of allowing and encouraging advice during ongoing ranked games.
ghug (5068 D(B))
14 Nov 17 UTC
I think generally you just need to confirm that they're not in the game themself or discussing it with anyone who is.
Durga (3609 D)

Chluke: you can't publicly talk about gunboat games or talk about the games to someone in them but I am fairly sure there is no rule about asking advice on them privately.
Durga (3609 D)
14 Nov 17 UTC

Yeah, mentors aren't supposed to write moves for the players - as I stated.
Yoyoyozo (65 D)
14 Nov 17 UTC

The rules forbid discussing ongoing gunboat games on the forum. This is partially in conjunction with the rules that forbid breaking press settings. Since there is no global chat in gunboat, there’s shouldn’t be one on the forum.

Assuming your mentor isn’t in the game with you, it’s fine to talk to someone for advice about a gunboat game, privately.

I think that when people have been singing the praises of both vanilla and strawberry milkshakes, the truly greatest milkshakes have fallen to the wayside. Chocolate-Peanut butter shakes are the best and you all need to see the error of your ways.

Anyone available to cancel a game?
I don't know the protocol or how often this happens, but the site crashed, and now Silent Partners-3 is back up, some countries' moves processed and others didn't. I watch all the games in this series (I have set up the games). I hope we're not expected to continue under conditions like these, but i'm open to however people usually handle this.

Resulting Fallacy
This article is about decision making in poker, but I think it equally applies to Diplomacy and well lots of other things too. I think a lot of players, including myself, fall into this trap of believing everything that works was a good decision and everything that doesn't was a bad one.

Brainstorming on getting more no-press live classic games
Arg! We had 6 for a no-press (i.e. no-chat) live game tonight, no cigar. And there haven't been a lot of no-press Many years ago, my FTF Dip crew had a similar problem ... some wanted and had time for no-press, others didn't, so we couldn't get 7 ... and we came up with a neat solution, which I'll share in a minute. But first ... anyone have advice on how we drum up support for a live no-press game?
