Playing with less than 7?
Does anyone know if we are able to play a game with less than 7 people? And if we can, does anyone know how we go about doing that? Our current game will only start if we have 7.

Western Meddling in Iranian Protests
So this is great and all. Encouraging protests and stuff. Um didnt this happen in Iran in Arab Spring too? When people start dying were gonna look pretty bad again. Like we encouraged a coup but didnt actually care about the consequences.

Fewer live classic games these days?
Looking back through the last couple months' completed games, it feels like there are far fewer Classic live games than there were a few years ago. Do other people have the same feeling?

Greetings! Winter is upon us, and that means the return of the 1v1 Champions League: A tournament which is designed to be run bi-annually for the very best 1v1 players. This tournament format has been taken from the fairly successful UEFA Champions League, adapted for Diplomacy, and features only the 32 best 1v1 players. If you don't qualify this time, there's always time to improve your rating for next time - and these games should hopefully be just as fascinating to follow for everyone else!

This tournament shall be played exclusively on the France vs Austria map, as that is the most balanced 1v1 variant on webDip.

Entry is free, as long as you qualify - which requires you to be either the defending champion (genghiz), or one of the top 32 highest ranked 1v1 players by Elo to enter. The winner of this tournament will receive 1000 webDip points (and should future updates allow, a nice little trophy icon). Everyone else will receive... Nothing. There are no prizes for second best here, it's winner takes all.

A link to the 1v1 Elo can be found here: http://tournaments.webdiplomacy.net/theghost-ratingslist/ghost-ratings-by-category

More information to follow.

The 32 entrants will initially be seeded into four pots - The top 8 in pot one, 9-16 in pot two, 17-24 in pot three, and 25-32 in pot four. A group stage will then be drawn, where each group will contain one player from each pot. The defending champion will always be the top seed. There shall be 8 groups in total (Groups A-H). Within these groups, each player will play the other twice (once as France, and once as Austria). These games will be played simultaneously. A win will be worth 3 points, a draw worth 1 point, and a loss worth nothing. The top two players will then advance to the knockout stage. In the knockout stage, you will once more play two games against your opponent (one as France, one as Austria). The player with the most wins will advance - draws are worth nothing. The losing player will be knocked out. In the Round of 16, the group winners will be seeded, and the runners up unseeded, so all Round of 16 ties will be a winner against a runner up. You will not play anyone from your group in the Round of 16. From the Quarter Finals onward, there will be no seeds.

Group Stage Tiebreakers: Austria was deemed the weaker country when two good players are playing each other for the initial tournament, and this did not cause any problems, so it shall remain that way for this one. Should two (or more) players finish with an equal number of points, Head to Head record shall be the first tiebreaker. Number of Austria wins in the Head to Heads shall be the second tiebreaker. Total Austria wins shall be the third tiebreaker. Should there still be a tie after all of these, then a single play-off game shall be played, with Austria advancing in the case of a draw in that one.

Knockout Stage Tiebreakers: If the two legs do not produce a clear winner (either 1-0 or 2-0), then a first tiebreaker game will be played. If this game is also drawn, then a fourth game will be played - and only then will Austria advance in the case of a tie.

Phase Lengths will be 24 hours. However, readying up is STRONGLY encouraged, and if you repeatedly fail to ready up and your game is lagging behind others at the same stage, then as Tournament Director (TD) I retain the right to chase you up and demand you ready up if there is not a reasonable excuse not to do so. Obviously readying up is not necessary immediately, but games should ideally be progressing at a rate of at least a few phases per day.

Each player will get one week of total pause time, which can be split up throughout the tournament. If a pause is required, please send the TD (myself) as a message and I will pause the game for you, as long as you have pause time remaining. Please do not pause without letting me know.

A CD will result in a loss for that game. NMR's will not be punished, though this being a 1v1 tournament, they will almost certainly lead to a loss anyway. Replacements will be called up for anyone who CD's or drops out during the group stages. If a player drops out or CD's midgame in the knockout stage, they will forfeit that match. If a player drops out prior to a game beginning in the knockout stage, then the player they last knocked out shall instead be recalled to the tournament, as they will be deemed to have lost the game unfairly due to doping, bribery, fielding an ineligible player, or some other terrible sporting blight upon the world.

Games will be cost 5 points to join, as that is the minimum bet. Being an unranked game, these points will still be returned to you at the end of the game. Games will be FP and Non-Anon, for the benefit of spectators and to allow maximum Global arguing for the rest of us to enjoy.

The TD retains the right to force draw games that are stalemated after one year of stalemate, should the players involved not draw it themselves.

Signups will be open until 11pm BST (UTC+1) on Wednesday 17th May. Groups will be seeded immediately after signups close, and games will begin as soon as possible after this.

PM's are going to be sent to the top 32 players to encourage as many of them to sign up as possible. Lower ranked players are free to state their interest in playing in this thread, in the case of any of the top 32 rejecting the opportunity to play.

A little bit pissed at the continuing exclusivity to be frank. I played in one tournament and seemed to be forever banned from playing again, despite winning my first round.

it seems all you mods care about who organise these is playing each other and your mates by ruling by GR - an arcane process which I don't believe is a truly representative measure.

Before you say it I have tried to organise games for > 100 GR players but they never seem to happen. Why don;t you open them up by RR rather than GR?

The Champions League wouldn't exist if it weren't based on ELO. The point of this tournament is to pit the proven best of the best against each other. It would just be the second take of our recent 1v1 tournament if ELO weren't a factor, which anyone and everyone could have entered. There will be more of those tournaments before too long.
Yoyoyozo (95 D)

There are tons of other 1v1 tournaments that have happened that were open. Meme 1v1 tournament was open and was by far the best. I think the reason why it's for the top 32 is because while meme's was the best tournament, it had like 130 people in it and was a pain to coordinate, and it took over 7 months to complete.

32 is about the average size of a tournament and because its so popular, it has to be limited to the best. "First come, first served" doesn't make for a very good tournament.
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))
08 Nov 17 UTC
@Wusti

This is, as far as I'm aware, the only tournament that is specifically limited in numbers by GR like this. Most tournaments are open access to all and simply use GR for seeding. As the entire point of the 1v1 Champions League is to replicate the UEFA Champions League, and that is limited to the 32 best teams in football, so this is limited to the 32 best players here. Elo is the only measure of 1v1 skill, so it's quite logical why Elo is used.

PM's have been sent out to the top 32, but as it's extremely unlikely all of them will sign up, anyone who applies here will be added until (if) they are bumped out before signups close.

No cahnce of puting in 4 slots for wild cards ?? top 28 + 4 wild cards ??

if not this time maybe something to consider.

To be honest I get wustis point. And actually UEFA CL have rounds of qualifications that start 3 months before the 'visible' CL starts.
So instead of arbitrary wild cards why not open say 4 slots to hide who qualify out of a pre tournament open to all? You could make it a quick 12 h phase and run it over 1 week

The main reason why the Champion's League has happened twice this year and the Showdown only once is the sheer amount of time an open-to-all tournament takes.
