Jun 2015 GR Challenge - Game 1 EOGs
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=163864
Result: Two-way draw between England and Turkey (my first two-way draw!)

This was honestly a pretty cut-and-dry game for me. I can almost never say, but aside from small details, I wasn’t really once surprised by anything that happened in this game. I had fun, though, mostly because Austria-Turkey and England-Turkey are both fun alliances. EOG below.

Reliability Ratings and drop outs
We all have games where players losing drop out, but there are some which get utterly ruined by guys in pivotal positions going AWOL. Is it time that players who are proven unreliable have to sit out for a period?

And it's NFL Pick 'em Time...yes, time to pick a new commissioner! ;) Or, you know, divisions, wild cards, conference title games, and the Super Bowl winner. And of course the week by week picks--Steelers/Patriots go tomorrow, Sunday notables include Broncos/Ravens, Chargers/Lions, Giants/Cowboys, and my OH GOD WHAT THE HELL ARE THOSE BLACK JERSEYS?! 49ers play Monday night! The Week 1 match-ups...pick 'em!

EXACTLY when does a game end?
In my set of rules, rule XIII indicates that possession of a SC only occurs after fall retreats have been completed. On this site, it seems that for purposes of determining a solo victory, a victory is declared following the fall diplomacy phase prior to retreats. For clarification: on a fall turn that great power A takes its 18th SC but great power B could then retreat into into one of country A's SCs, is country A awarded a win prior to that fall's retreats? Thank you.

Am I the only person that doesn't understand why they page layout is so narrow? there is significant space in the right and left margins for order information, game state information, and everything you need at a single glance, instead of all the scrolling i have to do. the layout is especially important because the page has to be refreshed constantly.

Trump
Hmm...

My guess is he's actually a very insecure person who's now deliberately turning himself into a caricature so as to be absolutely unelectable.

No no, this has been going on for a long time now, with the immature Twitter wars and insensitive comments. People keep predicting that, at some point, people are going to come to their senses about Trump and all his supporters will abandon him, but if it's ever going to happen, why hasn't it already?

"Donald Trump is no doubt a wealthy buffoon — but he is a buffoon who understands the underlying passions of the GOP base"

http://www.salon.com/2015/07/25/donald_trump_is_an_actual_fascist_what_his_surging_popularity_says_about_the_gop_base/

This article insists on Trump and GOP not being actual fascists, but having parallels with fascism that cannot be overlooked.

I'd only add, regarding the words of Umberto Ecco, that China is a perfect working example of "absolute state control with a free market" (maybe we should question how much "free" is the "free market")

2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))

What "issues" are being brought to the forefront by Trump? Please elaborate. He's just taking reactionary positions to standard GOP talking points but positioning himself as a political-correctness-be-damned blowhard who says what the "real America" is thinking. There's nothing original coming out of the Trump camp except hot air.
Apparently "nobody would even be talking about immigration" if Trump hadn't brought it up. That's what he claims, at least.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

Trump is a fascist, yes. I seem to recall getting mocked for saying on this forum that fascism is increasingly a feature of political life in western countries. Meanwhile neo-Nazis in germany set fire to refugee shelters, Hungary is building a massive border wall, trump is chomping at the bit to do the same in America, and Americans are still unprepared to denounce Israel for it's colonialist settlement policies. To name a few
SantaClausowitz (360 D)

You should be mocked because you have no fucking clue what fascism is and means, not to mention that you are a clown

The dictionary definition is good enough for me:

"(sometimes initial capital letter) a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism."

Dictator, oligarchy. Very little functional difference.

Is China dictatorship or functioning democracy?

Is the EU being run by a bunch of bureaucrats on the European Commission?

Is the two-party system in the US sham front where corporations buy powerand elections and pay for both sides so they win regardless o the vote?

I don't think fascism and corporatism are exactly the same thing. If Bernie Sanders is correct, corporations want the US population to be afraid of migrants (and allow minimum wage to drop to prevent companies heading to China) so they can focus their fear outward and ignore the injustices being done at home.

But i don't think this quiet wualifies as Fascism.
So trump would be a dictator...

Trump's troll game is so strong, and he has elevated it Jordan-like as the stakes have increased; I am constantly amazed. He's the Arnold Palmer of trolling, the Rembrandt of trolling. Students will be studying Trump in a hundred years alongside the other masters of Dada and performance art.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

The USSR had many fascist elements, yes. That they used the rhetoric of communism to justify themselves is not so important. Now, I grant you, there were many substantive differences between the Soviet autocracies and the fascist countries, chiefly the role of tradition, but to prove my point, I say, look at Putin's Russia. Essentially fascist. How was that such an easy transition from the USSR 20 years ago? Because they had a form of fascism before.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
27 Aug 15 UTC
And the same can be said for modern DPRK
Thucydides (864 D(B))
27 Aug 15 UTC
Bottom line is: you don't have to have the surname Mussolini or Franco or Hitler to be fairly compared to a fascist.

Those guys were useful in the way that Trump is useful: they were extreme forms of what he have long had in diluted form, and so gave us a sense of the Platonic ideal or logical conclusion of what we deal with on a regular basis in more normal circumstances. Feudalism gives way to fascism, but very little substantive change takes place.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
27 Aug 15 UTC
And if I was to provide my own definition of fascism it would badically be this:

A system of centralized undemocratic power in which dissent is suppressed by the creation and dissemination of an ideology or value system via propaganda, the unique features of which usually involve aggression, selfishness, military-worship, nationalism/superiority complex, and a hatred for egalitarian communities.

Fascism is the logical conclusion of backlash to the Enlightenment. It is the ultimate counter-revolution, counter-reformation, and everything else. It is on the right for a reason.
SantaClausowitz (360 D)
27 Aug 15 UTC
(+3)
But it isn't on the right... You definition encompasses, left and right equally, WWII America according to your brain dead definition was without a doubt fascist
SantaClausowitz (360 D)
27 Aug 15 UTC
(+4)
I guess it's less a problem of definition than application.

Your true definition would be

Fascim: (Noun) something I don't agree with
Thucydides (864 D(B))
27 Aug 15 UTC

"WWII America according to your brain dead definition was without a doubt fascist"

Well, it kind of was. If the shoe fits...

Internment camps? Propaganda campaigns? We're obviously not above that stuff just because we America
Thucydides (864 D(B))
27 Aug 15 UTC
And the fact that there was an attempted fascist coup before we declared war, along with all sorts of nazi sympathizers here, speaks to that quite clearly. A pity you chose such a simple example
Jamiet99uk (898 D)
27 Aug 15 UTC

People on all sides of politics use propaganda, there is nothing specifically fascist in character about the use of propaganda, and propaganda was used by various groups, states, and religious organisations well before the concept of fascism emerged.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
27 Aug 15 UTC
What you don't understand is that fascism existed before the word did. Pharonic Egypt was fascist in many ways. Try some critical thinking: look into an ideology and identify its salient features and then think broadly about how those ideas manifest in other places. You don't have to wear a swastika to be a fascist just as you don't have to be Strom Thurmond to be a racist.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
27 Aug 15 UTC
Fascist as a word is important today because of the legacy and example left by hitler. Just like how trump is showing what is so dangerous and toxic about the american far right, hitler shows us what is so dangerous and toxic about the General features of fascism.

This website should have statistics for each country of each map (wins, draws, losses, etc.) like vdiplomacy.

I know this is a feature request and I'm supposed to check the todo list, but the forum that the "todo list" link directs to doesn't seem to have been used since last year, and I can't seem to find the actual list anywhere.
