On Time
Two interesting articles that I thought could serve as a starting point for a discussion on time. How does time as we perceive it differ from time as a property of the universe? What meaning can humans extract from a clock that is so accurate it keeps different time on the floor or on a table?

Next question!
Should I get this one? 25% off, now €37,49.
I heard it's good, but is it good enough for that price for a casual gamer like me, who will perhaps not be able to give it the time to enjoy 'all of it'?

Violence and Death Threats in the Forum
Guys, Yellowjacket and Thucy started this violence and "kill him" thing in the Bible thread, aimed at me, and were silenced for it. Since then Thucy actually opened a thread with the same wording (or almost) and now chaqa has jumped on the meme.

Yeah, agreed, the whole repeating thing is clever when timed well, but the "kill him" thread makes me very uncomfortable since I was the target of the first two posts calling for violence or death. Do I think they mean it? No. Does it bother me? Yes. Maybe because the teacher in the office next to mine, on the other side of my wall, had a crazy guy come looking for him--at school--with a car trunk full of weapons including an AK47. Death threats aren't funny and are rightly banned on this site, for good reason. Let's use some common sense here, or common decency, if that's not too much to ask--this site is a great one, the forum is a good one, and the ups and downs are quite normal over time. Let's keep this a good thing.

Mujus: I've stayed out of this so far, but you must realize the following:
"I give mujus a free gift every day by not shooting him in the face. #christianlogic" ≠ "kill him"

Yellowjacket tried to compare himself to Jesus in response to "We are not rewarded for doing that--it's not anything to boast of--it's just admitting our need and accepting his free gift. :-)". You'd have to be blind as bat not to have caught that by now.

"You'd have to be blind as bat not to have caught that by now."

Either that or you never open the Daily Bible Verses thread like a normal guy.

If I wanted to read a bible verse every day, I'd pick a bible verse every day and read it. Why Mujus feels the need to post it so we all know which bible verse he chose to read today is beyond me.
JECE (1253 D)
13 Nov 14 UTC
steephie22: Presumably Mujus opens the Daily Bible Verses on a more than daily basis and has some memory of what he posted in said thread.

I still don't see how the thread helps. You can open the book on the same page multiple times a day too.

That might sound offensive but I don't mean to be offensive, although I definitely want to provoke thought/a reaction from Mujus, because I'm genuinely wondering how this is supposed to help anyone.

Take a chill pill, Mujus. No-one is actually threatening to kill you, nor has anyone done so in the recent past.

There has also been a lot of discussion, in at least two other threads, regarding YJ's post in the bible verses thread, and for you to create a third is verging on spam.

I say this thread is spammy and you should be hit with a rod.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))

Guys, I agree with mujus. There are some things to not joke about. There are a lot of people out there that are truly crazy and who have taken things on the Internet too far. I have a friend (also played o NV this site) that was a bank manager who was robbed at gun point who threatened to kill one of the tellers. It was the worst experience of his life.

There are times to be funny and times to be prudent. The forum got out of hand once when joking turned into chaos, biting and worse. That said, understand that if someone is genuinely posting that something is uncalled for, try to take it as a constructive statement instead of a challenge to pour on more.

also, Steephie, if mujus' Daily Bible Thread bothers you, or you aren't interested in a thread that discusses the Bible, then don't join it.
Zmaj (215 D(B))

I don't think Mujus is right. Yes, death threats aren't funny. Yes, they are a call for violence. But hitting children is not funny either, it's also a call for violence, but Mujus and CrazyAnglican have openly promoted it in the forum. So, where to draw the line? I say, let everyone say whatever they like. Then others can decide whether they even want to talk to such people.
steephie22 (182 D(S))

@Tru: If my discussing the point of such a thread bothers you, don't reply..

Tru Ninja is right. The whole purpose of introducing the new regime is that webDip members could use the forum without being made to feel uncomfortable. As there is no chance of returning to the previous state of affairs we should endeavour to make the new reality work as well as possible.

Whilst I can understand some of us not actively supporting the mods, the very least we can do is avoid blaming members on the receiving end of potentially controversial comments for feeling discomforted.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))

i am all for silencing users who threaten other users to take their lives. that is, however, not the topic at hand. the posts by yj and thucy were clearly not death threats. if mujus feels uncomfortable if them, that's what the mute function is for.

Whilst that is true, I don't see how it is relevant. We should not assume that members are aware of every forum in-joke that circulates

As every new member is, by definition, ignorant, and a primary motive for the rule changes was to make the site more welcoming to new members, clearly we should.

As long as Mujus was just a bigot, I didn't mind him one bit. But now that he's trying to infect the forum with censorship, he's become dangerous. Because there are always people like Octavious, Ninja and others, who would sacrifice anything for "safety".
Octavious (2701 D)

The forum has censorship, Zmaj. That battle has been and gone. I appreciate your new acceptance of ignorance, but you don't have to embrace it quite that strongly :p

Thucy has indeed made the joke before. Unfortunately, it was poorly timed and, coming after a threat of violence from YJ, it was in bad taste and lost any attempt at humor. Jokes are fine, but in the same way you shouldn't say "bomb" on an airplane, timing is everything.
Octavious (2701 D)
13 Nov 14 UTC
(+2)
I don't wish. I was one of the minority who very much preferred the old system. But being both in the minority and being very much a guest on this site one has to recognise reality.

We have rules, we have censorship. The only thing up for debate is how best to apply them fairly.

Threads not serving purposes
Threads are now being locked, without breaking any rules whatsoever, because "they serve no purpose." (Coincidentally, said threads had a high concentration of posts critical of the mods, and of particular mods almost universally held to be hugely overreactive, in particular).

Speed of electrons: calculated/theorised based on what observations?
I understand that you can calculate the speed of an electron if you know it's time and place at various times, but I can't imagine how one would observe these things in the first place. Presumably one observes something else and uses calculations based on a theory combined with these observations, but I'd like to know what those actual observations are.
