Forum Moderation and Muting
For the past few years abge and the mod team have been asking members to tell us what you wanted moderation wise. More than anything we have asked you to email Kestas if you do not agree with site policy. Not a single person EVER has emailed him asking for more forum moderation.

Kestas is not willing to make changes to forum policy without feedback from members, and that is something no one will give him. It’s part of the reason abge does not want to be an active forum moderator anymore, because despite his best efforts to poll the site members, his attempts to gauge what everyone want end up derailed, and no one will email their thoughts to Kestas.

So what I decided to do was to make a point, to Kestas, to abge, but mainly to everyone on the forum.

I picked a thread that was disgusting, one that supported the death of students and kids, and was made on the anniversary of D-Day. The reason I picked this thread is because if anyone on the site listened to Kestas, you would have simply muted this thread if it offended you. That is what the moderator team has been suggesting for years now.

Despite this, dozens of people saw my rants against mapleleaf. Proving that people do not like and/or use the mute button.

So here is my question, why haven’t you emailed Kestas about this? If you don’t like a feature on this site that is a corner stone of the moderator policy, why won’t you speak up about it?

The moderator team cannot change the site policy, Kestas can, and is open to everyone’s suggestions, but that doesn't help anyone if you all refuse to tell him what you want on this site.

So please answer this question, which of the following two options would you prefer?

1) The current setup, where any member is welcome to post anything they want on the forum. With no limits whatsoever, where all members are allowed to post accordingly, including moderators. Where forum moderation is completely controlled by the mute button. Where moderators can only recommend members use the mute feature if they are offended by a post.

2) A setup where members are allowed to post whatever they want on the forum. But where forum moderators have the discretion to lock threads and issue warnings for the few cases where a member’s behavior is so vulgar that it would probably get you arrested for speaking it in public in any country. The mute function would still be available, but it would not be the sole forum of moderation. In which case forum moderators would be expected to act more professionally then they are currently

I’ll wrap this up by again apologizing to anyone who read my vulgar posts, and to Maple. Despite being a jerk in the way you presented your opinions, you didn't deserve the slamming I gave you for it. Hopefully it wasn't in vain and everyone can now work together to come up with exactly what forum members want since we've proven that some members aren't comfortable with the current setup.

If we can comment here, I fine with number 1 provided the mod freedom comes with the freedom for players to mute mods. If you want the same privileges as the rabble like us, you need to adhere to the same limits we do, which means being forum moderated by seeing yourselves muted.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
08 Jun 14 UTC
That isn't part of the option. We currently *Have* the same privileges as the rabble, and we currently *cannot* be muted. If you want something else then it's not option 1.

@everyone feel free to post an option 3 if there's some morphing you prefer of the two options.

I would also like to point out that currently less then 12 active members have been muted by more then 5 people. That is out of 1000+ active members. So muting isn't currently being utilized. If you are one of the people who doesn't use the mute feature then please tell us why you choose not to use it.
krellin (80 DX)

JMO -- Muting is not used as an option, and 1000+ active members.

And here we have an "issue" being discussed by the usual <15 suspects who claim the site is being destroyed by x,y,z, bad language, etc.

Can we give it a fucking rest already.

You don't have to like Maple to understand what an important point he was making, to me the point seemed to be he was making fun of Americans for favouring laws that lead to the continual unnecessary slaughter of the innocent at the hands of nutters who have easy access to murderous weapons.
There actually is nothing to suggest these psychos would not kill anyway but there seems to be an ignorance about gun ownership in the US that sane people find peculiar and weird. I think the Bill Maher parody of the current carry campaign hits the nail right on the proverbial head.

If I may post as a member, I would put forward having a -1 button in addition to the +1 button. As soon as a post has a certain ratio of downvotes to upvotes (say 3:1) it is collapsed for everyone on the site, with the option to manually expand it and view the post.

No, jmo, you have *more* privileges than the rabble because your voice can't be muted. Your fucking ignorant if you think you have the same privileges. You have more and you must therefore show responsible use of the privileges.

Not according to Kestas, this is his reply to a member who told him what you did.

"Thanks for pointing this out *$%#@#. I can't really say "well mapleleaf can write stupid hateful crap makes everyone think less of you, but jmo you can't," though I agree responding to stupid hateful crap that makes everyone think less of you with the same thing (even if not nearly as bad) doesn't help anyone and does reflect badly on the team.

So my personal advice (if asked) would be to stay above his level, let him make an ass of himself, and not give him the attention and validation he wants. However in terms of requests from one admin to another just don't involve mod/admin status or the team.

In the past when another mod started to fly off the handle on the forums I decided to remove the mod/admin marker, so people thought of that mod as just another forum member, and we may need to return to that and perhaps revisit whether team members can be muted on the forums (but I really hope it won't and doubt it will come to that)."

So Draugnar, while you may think that I should be held to different standards I AM NOT currently by anyone. That is the point of this thread. If you do not like the current setup then say so to Kestas. Not to me, he's fine with my behavior currently and the setup of the forum. All I wanted to do, and accomplished, was the prove that members aren't happy with at least part of the current setup, yourself included.
pangloss (363 D)

Setup (2) is preferable, but instead of the standard being "things that are illegal in any country" it should be "things that are illegal in the country where the servers are".

Having a -1 with a +1 seems to me to be a way of having opt-out muting rather than opt-in--that is, by default people with unpopular opinions are muted and you have to go out of your way to see what they have to say. It's a fair compromise, but it is open to abuse. Another negative is that it makes the forum more like reddit.

I want to reveal to you all that I, krellin, have a Superpower. It is the power of *ignore*.

While you lowly slobs out there must avail yourselves of the technological wonder that is the "Mute" button, I must confess that I, krellin, have the Superpower of Ignore.

With that amazing gifts, surely of the gods themselves, I can simply pass over the written word without reading, let alone attempting to comprehend, the psycho babble contained therein.

One maplepoo, recent Villian of the Threads, is one such example of a chap whom, while I occassionally sling my arrows at him, mostly I use my amazing gift of Ignore to simply pass OVER his posts, without nary a word entering my skull.

Amazingly, this gifts is even applicable to the Mods themselves, whom I also freely ignore if and when it pleases me.

I'm not sure if the gods are so giving, but if it is within you, I would pray on bowed knee to the gods themselves that you, too, may be granted the Superpower of Ignore...thus rendering mute meaningless, and your life much more amusing.

Breast wishes, peons.

By request, I'm going with option 2 because mapleleaf's threads among plenty of other comments by people I won't name (something like "landowner" was it...?) are horrible, and if I wanted to read the things they say, I'd go to 4chan. The mute function is great but there are threads on this forum that I'm embarrassed to even be associated with.
Yeah pangloss, I'll admit reddit was the inspiration behind that, but I feel like they do it well.
And draug, it would be for individual responses, not entire threads.
Maniac (189 D(B))

JMO - "Despite this, dozens of people saw my rants against mapleleaf. Proving that people do not like and/or use the mute button."

What? Are you saying because we haven't muted Mapleleaf that we don't like the mute button? You said yourself that not a single member has emailed Kestas asking for more moderation, why do you think that is? Could it be because people are generally happy with the system as it stands. I like the mute button, even though I've never used it. Just because I disagree with or am offended by a person's post doesn't mean I'll won't appreciate his/her next post, so I choose not to use the mute button.

We all know you want to have additional powers so you can swan around deciding what us mere mortals can and can't talk about - just back off. Let the grown ups decide for themselves to engage in converstaions or decide if they want to mute some members, we don't need you or anyone else deciding for us.

I should add the obligatory, "the mods do a thankless task amazingly well, tadda, yadda, yadda"

The forum exists primarily for three purposes. To advertise games, to answer questions about Diplomacy, and to provide a distraction whilst waiting for a game or phase to happen. It does all these things rather well in its current form. Option 1 is fine.

"So Draugnar, while you may think that I should be held to different standards I AM NOT currently by anyone."

You were held to a different standard by me when I chose you as a mod and recommended Kestas make you the admin to replace me. You should hold yourself to a higher standard as well.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
08 Jun 14 UTC
Exactly abge, I agree with you, I should be held to higher standards. But I needed to demonstrate what happens when people act as they are allowed to, and not how they are expected too. You can't expect people to always behave how they should, if there are no rules to enforce it.

You have members mad at me for "abusing" my power, and you have members pleased with me for calling out maple the way I did. From the +1's and comments it seems about split down the middle. So which way is appropriate? <--hypothetical.

@Maniac, let me clarify, no one has emailed Kestas, however the mods regularly get emails/pm's from members asking why we allow such trash on the forum. Like threads mocking the holocaust, etc. And if people didn't care then they wouldn't be posting replies to maple or anyone else saying how horrifying their thread was. Yet multiple people did, and they received a lot of +1's. How else are we supposed to judge support?

If people are completely happy with the system then why is it that less then 2% of our active members use the forum?

And nope, I have said this before and will reiterate it again, I will not be involved in forum moderation outside of game related cheating. No desire, not interested, let someone else deal with that. The problem is no one is willing besides abge, who only sticks around because he can't find anyone insane enough yet reasonable enough to take his place.
