How do you feel about abortion and euthanasia Synapse? Abortion is fine, euthanasia not fine. However you can argue about abortion all day. I don't believe that a foetus is a human being, however (unlike Draugnar) I believe that a human being is a human being.

What about war? Is it okay to kill in defence of your country? No.

What about killing in self defence? Is that okay? Yes. Slight contradiction with above except killing in war is premeditated. It's basically a case of "stand your ground" on the battlefield, when in reality you should try to flee. I don't agree with "stand your ground" warfare.

Are the ever circumstances where it is okay to take a life? No, it's never "okay". However we accept self-defense as a defense because in that situation you have *no choice* so we accept a mitigation. I still don't think you should go around taking lives in self-defense ala Trayvon Martin. Any situation in which you have a choice, and choose to end a life, is illegal from my perspective. That's the whole basis of premeditation/provocation versus killing "in the moment".

So, an unborn child who has no say is worth less than someone who decided to take another's life willfully and with malice aforethought. Good to know. I consider you as much scum as you consider me, baby killer.

An unborn child isn't a child that hasn't grown yet, just as I am not a Hollywood actor waiting for a career opportunity. Things are as they are, not as they could be.

If it has brain waves, a heart beat, and feels pain, it is a human life and worthy of protection more than any serial killer.

At three weeks, a fetus has a heart beat. At 6 weeks, we can detect brainwaves. And at 8 weeks, it feels pain. So within two months of conception, it meets all those requirements.

"Synapse, why do you against euthanasia but in favor of abortion?"

When I refer to abortion, I refer to the ability of women to abort their pregnancies. I do not consider a fertilised egg to be the same as an adult human. As I said, a fertilised egg is no more of a person than I am the Prime-Minister. Things are as they are.

I believe that every human being has the right to life, that is irrevocably enforced by our common humanity. I don't believe you have the right to end your life, as this implies that your right to life is conditional. I don't believe that the state has the right to end your life, as that would imply that your right to life is at the mercy of responsibilities (don't pay your taxes? Death for you.). I don't believe that other people have the right to end your life, which is why murder should remain a crime punishable by life imprisonment. I don't believe that you have the right to take lives in warfare; I believe that warfare is essentially illegal.
SYnapse (0 DX)
11 Mar 14 UTC
Draugnar, now we are talking about timescales rather than the right to abort. I'm not engaging in a debate about gestation cycles on this thread, but I believe that there should be a right to abort at some point between an egg being fertilised and it becoming a "human being." Okay?

Current consensus is that fetuses don't feel pain until 26 weeks up, while the AMA, based on a UCSF study, don't believe that pain is felt until the third trimester.

Hey guys lets solve the abortion issue in this thread.
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Mar 14 UTC
There is no consensus 2WL.

http://www.prolifeaction.org/faq/unborn.php#pain - 8 Weeks

http://www.prochoiceactionnetwork-canada.org/articles/fetal-pain.shtml - Tries to claim that "maybe" newborns and premies feel pain but even that is debatable. So we have 8 weeks to 39 weeks as the range and not a fucking bit of consensus.

I back up my claims.
Draugnar (0 DX)
11 Mar 14 UTC
And SY, we differ on whether the right to life is inate or can be stripped. I don't believe that someone is a human being just because they have the correct number of chromosomes and you obviously don't either as a fetus has that same number of chromosomes. So I say the serial miller and the mass murderer have given up the right to life and you say the unborn child has never had it. Discussion over as I will never agree that an unborn child who has brain waves and a heart beat is less human that a serial killer or a mass murderer and you will never believe the converse. So we should just not waste our energy.

Euthanasia doesn't imply that your right to life is conditional anymore than your choice not to say racist or sexist things on the radio implies that your right to free speech is conditional. If you voluntarily choose not to exercise a right, you still maintain it -- and while the permanence of not exercising one's own right to life certainly complicates it to an extent that the others don't, you still in the end have not compromised the CONCEPT of a right to life by choosing not to EXERCISE that right.

The point is that you are dehumanising adult human beings, which is an abhorrent thing to do. You're justifying murder by saying that it's subjective which people are "humans" and which are "animals". What if a society decides that negroes are "animals"? Or the mentally handicapped? These things are not fit to be judged by people. The idea of a natural human right is that no democratic movement can revoke the right to life. Yes, it's upheld by people but the principle is that it exists without enforcement. All breaches of that right are illegal even if they are considered legal at that time.

An egg does not possess the right to life, I hope you will agree, otherwise menstruation is a monthly genocide. So does a fertilised egg? I repeat I do *not* want the discussion about abortion timescales in this thread, it has been talked to death.

KingCyrus (511 D)

So what you are saying SY, is that we have no right to say what is or is not a human? So if someone were to say, a different race, take your pick, is animals, you would disagree because they have no right to define what is or is not a "human." Correct?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Some people believe being a homo sapien is necessary and sufficient to be human. Some believe it is necessary but not sufficient. Some believe it is sufficient but not necessary. I suppose some may even believe it is neither necessary nor sufficient.
SYnapse (0 DX)
11 Mar 14 UTC
I agree in principle with what you've said KingCyrus. Humans are humans regardless of IQ and physical deformity, actions or intrinsic characteristics like race; these do not change whether a person is a human being. An egg is not a human being either, I hope you agree, so you can argue about where the line should be drawn (in another thread!). But there is a line.
KingCyrus (511 D)

I guess what it boils down to, and an answer that can solve both questions is, what makes up a human being?

What, the testicles?
SYnapse (0 DX)

A person in a coma has the right to life; that is, they should not be killed.

You're being very clever here, because you're asking if we should cut off life support. Well, that has nothing to do with the right to life. The right to life is something which concerns the behaviour of other people; I would argue that in this case switching off life support is inaction rather than action. Do we owe a duty of care to that person to sustain their life which has no quality to it? In a way, families might pay for example to keep their loved one alone. Do we have the right to switch off life support? It depends, but ultimately switching off life support is not "killing" someone, it's just withdrawing medical assistance. Circumstances involving the likelyhood of recovery would probably apply in this instance. I am not a moral encyclopaedia, but I certainly don't believe you have the right to kill somebody in a coma, by shooting them in the head or whatever.

Oh I agree. I am just.... Testing the waters.

And thank you for the compliment.

However, are you definitely sure that possessing a brain is the one and only characteristic of humans?

Are the EDL England's only hope?
They seem to be the only organization with the guts to take on the anti-English agenda of the British establishment, not only in the media but politically as well. Our whole way of life is under constant attack, yet the vast majority of the population seem brainwashed (or just brain dead) into just accepting England's fate. The EDL patriots are not, and we must all redouble our efforts before it is too late.
