Ice Cold in Alex is the best for me. I'm also rather fond of On the Beach, but it's been a hell of a while since I've seen it.

Toss up between Gettysburg and Full Metal Jacket. The difference in style and tone makes it hard to decide. Both war movies, but that's about all they have in common.

Unless you count Das Boot as a war movie, in which case that would be my #1. In my mind, it's a thriller and not a war flick.

The Great Escape and Stalag 17, although Last of the Mohicans is a sentimental favorite since it takes place in areas of New York that I know very well.

Look it up. It's a low-budget Aussie WWI movie, but it's honest-to-God one of the most gut-wrenching war movies ever made. Also, it's a modern WWI movie, which are few and far between.

Kelly's Heroes is not bad for a war comedy (and it has great music by the way) but my all time war comedy favorite would have to be "1941". It has John Belushi. It wins.

BTW Beneath Hill 60 is on Netflix. You all should watch it soon if you get the chance, and we can start a thread about it.

Red Dawn was a pretty awesome comedy, too.

I won't vouch for any of the sequels, and it's not technically a "war" movie, but the first Rambo was a pretty good flick.

Great Escape and Tora Tora Tora.

Saving Private Ryan does rank up there and is one of the best with a completely fictional story.

And while not traditional, Schindler's List just for the sheer power of the story and Spielberg's incredible film crafting skill.
