NFL Week 5: Pick 'em--Wherein, Hey, There Are Actually a Lot of Good/Interesting Games!
So we kick off the week tonight with a game which looked like crap at the beginning of the year and now...looks slightly less like crap with the Bills and Browns going at it. Seattle meets Indy, the Niners and Texans square off on Sunday Night, the Raiders and Chargers play a LATER Sunday Night game no one outside California will watch, Pats/Bengals, Lions/Packers, and so on...so, once again, we ask you to...PICK 'EM!

Openings for a learning game
I enjoyed both the School of War and Dojo of War experiences this summer. Doing both at the same time was idiocy on my part, and I still owe an EoG for Dojo. However, the amount of learning was good, and humbling. I am proposing another learning game.

Best way to make more money out of money?
So there's a bunch of money I'm not planning to spend for at least 2 years. Can I best keep it on a bank account as usual or are there more lucrative options that have about the same risk level as a bank account (practically none, since in this case the government returns the money if the bank goes boom)?

When is it OK to start watching basketball again?
I stopped watching basketball altogether after the LeBron James "Decision" and strike-shortened season turned the NBA into a soap opera telenovela. Is the nonsense over yet? Are people playing basketball again? Like they mean business? Is there a new Bill Laimbeer out there fouling out and taking a bow before a booing crowd?

Interesting Poll
What would happen if during an election between two candidates for a political office a poll was held, where instead of preference for either candidate, people could "mix" the candidates, assigning percentages to each..? That should yield interesting and data on your electorate distribution..

reputation
i think you can get along fine until you pass a certain threshold of douchebaggery, then you get a reputation, and a flood of stories get brought up in everyday gossip and your cause is lost.

so does anybody have strategies for maximizing douchebaggery without losing reputation? i think the only hope is to conform. if you are a nonconformist, then any small thing will seem big because people will constantly hear of it because you are often talked about.

Gov Shutdown? 83% Disagree...
http://washingtonexaminer.com/wheres-sense-of-crisis-in-a-17-percent-government-shutdown/article/2536862

That's right, 83% of Federal Spending is still flowing. Time to take the 17% that is "non-essential" and give it to the states where it belongs, or let private industry perform the same functions.

The American government shut itself down, steephie.

We should all rally around Article V of the Constitution and fire every one of those damn idiots in Washington that forced this country into its current clusterfuck state this past decade or two.

Two decaders agao it was Bill Clinton in his first term. We have had 12 of the last 20 years under Democrats. What does this tell us?

But surely this is the best constitution in the world and shouldn't be changed because it was written by clever people...

Just for completeness the UK's unwritten constitution has yet to result in a government shutdown. Just saying.
Draugnar (0 DX)
01 Oct 13 UTC
And the UK is still run by people who think God gives them the right to rule others (House of Lords - Are they elected at all?)
Maniac (189 D(B))
01 Oct 13 UTC
The House of Lords is not elected and almost everyone agrees that the House of Lords needs reforming, but no one agrees on a method. That said the House of Lords doesn't have any real power apart from scrutiny and delay. They are not allowed to prevent finance bills and can't delay any legislation indefinitely. The system is far from perfect, but it doesn't result in a shutdown every few years.

It tells us republicans as the minority party use the budget and potential government shutdoenas a weapon for political gain. We all know this.
Maniac (189 D(B))
01 Oct 13 UTC
Just to be pedantic - the hereditary peers that sit in the House of Lords were 'elected'. The only people who could stand for election were the hereditary peers themselves and the only voters were all the hereditary peers present at the time. This reduced the hereditary peers from many hundreds to 99 from memory. The House of Lords is now made up of those hereditary peers, members reserved for the clergy and appointed peers.

I hope the Republicans throw compromise out the window and keep this shutdown going as long as possible. It's time to stop spending. Now. Don't restart the government until the Senate and Obama approve a budget that gives us a surplus by next year. We have to default at some point; I say we all take it up the ass and get it over with now.

I don't think the time is right for that Gunfighter. The public isn't ready to put the blame where it belongs, or to learn the lessons it needs to learn.

Republicans can't win this, in the court of public opinion. I think the shutdown is a stupid tactic.

What! The time is not right!? Are you telling me canceling the paycheck of 2.1 million Americans indefinitely, and shutting down services others need in order to make political gains is in bad taste!? Are you telling me that trying to take the country hostage because you are unable to push your agenda through elections and voters is in bad taste!? Seriously!?

You radical!!!
And the shutdown is a stupid tactic.

That's why stupid people like gunfighter love it!

To hell with repealing Obamacare; that monstrosity will go tits-up on its own.

I'm talking about stopping this insane amount of spending. Whether the public is ready or not, it's time to MAN UP, default on our debt, and begin our rise from the ashes of reckless spending.

I rather liked the Lords when before the reform. Having people born to their position produced a huge variety of personalities that you just don't get in politics anymore. I would be genuinely in favour of choosing part of the Lords purely by lottery to replicate it.

@Draug ... 12 out of 20 isn't all that great of a majority, Draug. That argument is shit anyway, you know that, I don't have to explain. And the eight Republican years were just *great* right?

@Santa, Draug ... It's *EVERYONE* - both Democrats and Republicans - that caused this. You're both smarter than passing the blame off to one side. The Republicans aren't being too friendly right now but the Democrats aren't compromising and are making the excuse that they "tried it already" and it didn't work - bull fucking shit. Politics won't work in this country if it's ruled by one party, and right now both parties are working to rule alone. They need to give and take if they are going to make it work.

@GunF ... take it up the ass? You are welcome to take it up the ass. I on the other hand will shove it further up your ass for being so fucking stupid.
SantaClausowitz (360 D)

Botox- why the fuck would the democrats compromise? This is not a vote on healthcare this is a fucking bill to fund the government. The last election democrats won the presidency and gained seats in both houses. WHY WOULD THEY COMPROMISE. Because the republicans decided to use people's livelihood as a bargaining chip when they couldn't overturn it using the democratic process? This is not "both sides" this is a party held hostage by its minority in turn holding the nation hostage.

" I'm talking about stopping this insane amount of spending. Whether the public is ready or not, it's time to MAN UP, default on our debt, and begin our rise from the ashes of reckless spending."

Then win an election shit for brains, you know, like its supposed to work.

They compromise because that's part of politics - not everyone agrees with everyone. We don't hold hands. There has to be give and take in order to succeed. It doesn't even matter who is right and who is wrong because the people who are wrong still think they are right and the people who are wrong will still have power, no matter how limited it may be.
SantaClausowitz (360 D)
01 Oct 13 UTC

Yes you compromise, you do not compromise when compromise involves a bill passed by congress signed by the president, and upheld by the Supreme Court being invalidated completely outside the intended legislative or judicial process.

"Then win an election shit for brains, you know, like its supposed to work."

Maybe that would be a possibility if the elections weren't rigged by the politicians and their corporate sugar daddies, aided and abetted by so-called "journalists". Really, do you think ANYONE who is currently in office would still be in office if the media did their fucking jobs and corporations didn't pour money everywhere?

You are an idiot if you think that the American people aren't brainwashed and distracted by outright lies from both sides. D or R doesn't matter, either way their corporate sponsors get their cut and the taxpayer gets boned.
Oh brainwashing. Got it. Good thing YOU know what is good for the country. Surprisingly it's also what's best for your particular socio-economic group! Isn't that a coincidence!
So just in case anyone didnt get gunfighters point. The republicans can't make changes because the American people don't want them. So what they should do is:

Step 1: hold the American government hostage until its forced to bow to their wishes
Step 2:
Step 3: Profit.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
01 Oct 13 UTC
Don't you get it? I'm a libertarian! As in, the federal government and their corporate masters can go fuck themselves!

There's a reason why libertarians are few and far between. The media never permits libertarians to give their two cents. A small federal government is good for everyone except for the politicians and the corporations.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
01 Oct 13 UTC
No, the Republicans should try to get rid of most of the government, not hold it hostage.
Great! Win a fucking election you fascist.
The media tends to let libertarians give their twenty bucks. People aren't buying it. Too bad, work on your outreach rather than blaming it on "the powers that be"

Give 1 pop culture thing you liked 10 years ago you now like less/dislike, and then 1 pop culture thing you disliked/liked less 10 years ago that you now like.
Give 1 religious/political thought/stance you agreed with 10 years ago that you now disagree with, and 1 religious/political thought/stance you disagreed with that you now agree with.
And to cap it off--1 book that's risen in your estimation over the last 10 years, and 1 that's fallen.

I don't know all that much about American history (self evident some might say), but I found this piece in the New York Review of Books challanged some of my preconceptions. The piece is a review of a recently published book on the New Deal. I found this section on isolationism as a function of US sectionalism particularly thought provoking -
