NFL Week 5: Pick 'em--Wherein, Hey, There Are Actually a Lot of Good/Interesting Games!
So we kick off the week tonight with a game which looked like crap at the beginning of the year and now...looks slightly less like crap with the Bills and Browns going at it. Seattle meets Indy, the Niners and Texans square off on Sunday Night, the Raiders and Chargers play a LATER Sunday Night game no one outside California will watch, Pats/Bengals, Lions/Packers, and so on...so, once again, we ask you to...PICK 'EM!

Openings for a learning game
I enjoyed both the School of War and Dojo of War experiences this summer. Doing both at the same time was idiocy on my part, and I still owe an EoG for Dojo. However, the amount of learning was good, and humbling. I am proposing another learning game.

Best way to make more money out of money?
So there's a bunch of money I'm not planning to spend for at least 2 years. Can I best keep it on a bank account as usual or are there more lucrative options that have about the same risk level as a bank account (practically none, since in this case the government returns the money if the bank goes boom)?

When is it OK to start watching basketball again?
I stopped watching basketball altogether after the LeBron James "Decision" and strike-shortened season turned the NBA into a soap opera telenovela. Is the nonsense over yet? Are people playing basketball again? Like they mean business? Is there a new Bill Laimbeer out there fouling out and taking a bow before a booing crowd?

Interesting Poll
What would happen if during an election between two candidates for a political office a poll was held, where instead of preference for either candidate, people could "mix" the candidates, assigning percentages to each..? That should yield interesting and data on your electorate distribution..

Interview with Antonin Scalia
I thought this was a very interesting interview. I'm sure many here hate the man, but irrespective of that, he's always interesting. So I thought I'd post this for y'all.

reputation
i think you can get along fine until you pass a certain threshold of douchebaggery, then you get a reputation, and a flood of stories get brought up in everyday gossip and your cause is lost.

so does anybody have strategies for maximizing douchebaggery without losing reputation? i think the only hope is to conform. if you are a nonconformist, then any small thing will seem big because people will constantly hear of it because you are often talked about.

As for those behind the mall attack, I don't care what happens to them as long as they end up dead and white phosphorous is involved.
redhouse1938 (429 D)
24 Sep 13 UTC
I'm not only talking about the mall attack (a Dutch woman who was pregnant 8 months was killed during the attack, needless to say I prefer to see all of Somalia in ashes than to see one of my countryman like that, but restraint is a good thing in international politics), I'm also talking about the pirating activities deployed from Somalia, the fact that it's a failed state, the fact that Somalis also do terrible things to one another etc etc

Why doesn't Putin order the Russian military to attack Somalia?
Putin33 (111 D)
24 Sep 13 UTC
I find Redhouse's statements immensely distasteful and ignorant.

You're not going to erect a strong state on a country whose population is primarily nomadic pastoralists with a climate that is no amenable to settled populations. The international intervention which kicked the Islamic Courts Union out of power didn't have a plan for creating any kind of stable civil authority in its absence. That said, northern Somalia is doing just fine.
Putin33 (111 D)
24 Sep 13 UTC
Why did pirating first start taking place? Because European countries were dumping waste off the coast of Somalia. They still are. The original aim of the 'pirate's was to defend the coast of Somalia.

Europe and the USA need to learn from the history books and stay the fuck out of Africa unless they actually want to take out the evil bad guy and walk out without trying to change everything. Otherwise Africa likely doesn't want them there.

Africa is a massive and diverse. The US's largest military presence on the continent is in Djibouti - formerly known as French Somaliland. They have been there without incident for years.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
24 Sep 13 UTC
Military presence is fine, Putin. We have military presence all over the world. I have a friend stationed in Hawaii and another in Berlin, two of the last places I see an anti-America revolution starting. We simply don't need to invade another country and install our own puppet; that just breeds terrorism. It's probably the root of most terrorism against this country altogether.
Putin33 (111 D)
24 Sep 13 UTC
We already have installed a government in Somalia as a result of military intervention (by proxy through Ethiopia & Kenya). In fact he just visited here today. The Shabab movement is not the government.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
24 Sep 13 UTC
Did I say they were? And yeah, we installed a "government" but we haven't yet gone full-scale Iraq on them. Just as it is one thing to have military presence without intervening, it's one thing to push a little bit and it's another to actually control what happens.

Like I said, there's nothing that a world power can do about Somalia that will improve the situation. The only people who can un-fuck Somalia are the people that live within its borders.
Putin33 (111 D)
24 Sep 13 UTC
World powers could have helped by allowing for Somalia unification. Instead 'territorial sovereignty' and an unwillingness to upset the OAU (especially since Ethiopia had lot of post-war prestige) precluded the restoration of the Ogaden to Somalia, as well as the Northern Frontier District and French Somaliland. It is not just the western powers that are to blame for this policy, but also the USSR & Cuba.
Invictus (240 D)
25 Sep 13 UTC
Yeah, let's not go to war with Somalia, but rather with Ethiopia, Kenya, and Djibouti! If there's one thing the American people will gladly support, it's a war for the territorial expansion of a Muslim country that isn't our ally against three others (two largely Christian) that are. In Africa! Let's go, boys!

Al-Shabab operates out of Somalia. This is an example of "Somalia getting better?"
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Sep 13 UTC
Al-Shabab has been kicked out of the major cities, which are largely peaceful now. Tourism, business, and construction are increasing in Mogadishu. They have an elected government. So yes, it is much better.
redhouse1938 (429 D)
25 Sep 13 UTC
That may be true, but we can't have governments on this earth that allow organizations to exist that have western targets for attacks in mind, so either the west has to help fight Al-Whatever (and the pirates) or something more drastic must be undertaken. But mercilessness is required.

Trying to get the conversation going bo_sox, throwing oil on the fire is good. But I am serious, we cannot let this "accident" slide, the world should know that terrorism is nipped in the bud, not after some idiots have gone so far down the road they crash boeings into skyscrapers filled with innocent civilians...
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Then we're blowing up half of the eastern African peninsula, replacing some high-power governments in Asia, revamping the Middle East, and while we're at it why not just conquer Mexico?

I never mentioned anything like it. The first thing that comes to mind is punitive action, actually.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

So basically you just want to send a random missile at Pakistan and crash a few kamikazes into Yemen or something...

Gov Shutdown? 83% Disagree...

That's right, 83% of Federal Spending is still flowing. Time to take the 17% that is "non-essential" and give it to the states where it belongs, or let private industry perform the same functions.

Give 1 religious/political thought/stance you agreed with 10 years ago that you now disagree with, and 1 religious/political thought/stance you disagreed with that you now agree with.

Isolationism
I don't know all that much about American history (self evident some might say), but I found this piece in the New York Review of Books challanged some of my preconceptions. The piece is a review of a recently published book on the New Deal. I found this section on isolationism as a function of US sectionalism particularly thought provoking -

LET'S GO PITTSBURGH PIRATES!
We have far more important things to worry about--I'll just leave the government shutdown talk for you all...you can probably guess who I back anyway--but for now, let's take a minute and unite in rooting the Pittsburgh Pirates on tonight! After *21 YEARS* of futility, they've FINALLY made it back to the postseason for this Wild Card Playoff against the Reds! The Mets were out of this before the season began...so let's all root for the Buccos (and their long-suffering fans!)
