If only Argentina made use of all the chances they got...

As much as I would have liked to see Messi stay in the tournament, I couldn't have stomached another game with Maradona the Hutt's smug face casting shadows across the pitch.

Nice to get France's traditional one good game of the tournament out of the way early, though

France was the better team in this one.

It'll be fun when England exists on Tuesday!

England have played surprisingly well this tournament. Not great, but better than a lot. Anything can happen in a knockout tournament, but I'd put them as favourites for the Columbia game.

Of those in the last 16 yet to play, Croatia, Belgium, possibly Spain have played better. Brazil have looked vulnerable... Japan have been an embarrassment to football and should be ashamed to show their faces. The others are varying degrees of average.

I haven't really thought too much of Spain this world cup. They got worked by morocco for most of that game, and only came out ahead because morocco absolutely could not finish. Croatia has looked great, tho I'm personally hoping for Belgium to keep showing up.

I think Switzerland is also fairly fun to watch

England was bad against Tunesia and played well against Panama, but who wouldn't have. They have not yet convinced me. Columbia could be tough. I agree with you that Belgium, Croatia and Spain looked good so far. Didn't Belgium beat England ;-)

Nooo, England played good against Tunisia. By far the better team. They just didn't score a winner until late in the game.

Then they got an easy peasy opponent in the second game. Panama was the second worst team (after Saudi Arabia) and in practice already knocked out. Then they played a friendly against Belgium. I wonder if they can get their mental state back to battle mode. Or, if they've been thinking too much on how many goals Kane has scored and how they're more or less already in the semifinals.

The funniest thing was group F, where Sweden topped with Germany LAST (!) on 4th place. Der mannschaft did their worst World Cup since the 1950s and I am proud that Sweden somehow was part of making that happen even if we where the only country they managed to beat. :)

The Belgium B team beat the England B team in what amounted to a friendly. Pretty meaningless, although it highlighted that Belgium have more depth in their squad these days.

I thought England did pretty well against Tunisia. The first half England were aggressive and looked like scoring several times, although they were brittle in defence. The second half was a little dull but looked very controlled. Tunisia are a decent squad, in fairness. The highest ranked African side who drew to Portugal and had a close 1-0 defeat against Spain in the run up to the world cup.

Germany worst result since 1938, well before 80s. The Bel Eng result shows England basically are a 14 man squad, not 23. I suspect a Belgium England final but good WC so far.

I'm watching the Stalinists play the Spanish Inquisition. Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition & the comfy Armchair.

There was a prick at our school who used to sit on the ball until people lost patience and kicked him off. He probably had 80% of possession too.

It's been a great few days. Germany, Argentina, Portugal, Spain... C'mon Mexico!

And England played nobody until now. Colombia will be a tough opponent if James can play.
