Re: Unconventional yet effective/high IQ openings

If you're looking at unconvential openings which aren't strictly inferior to the more 'traditional' ones, it's probably best to look at French openings, because France can do whatever and get away with it. An example of a moveset that is relatively unpopular, but played by Andrew Goff, who won three...

Re: Unconventional yet effective/high IQ openings

So, at least in the circles I play in, the Key Lepanto is known and is known to fail. Here's an example sandbox of what can go wrong: https://www.backstabbr.com/sandbox/Key-lepanto-vs-normal-moves/6210510404321280 Instead, what I find to be more popular is a Trieste loan, as showcased in this sandbo...

Re: Worst starting country

Disclaimer: I mainly play virtual face to face and face to face events and I'm okay in both formats - I've won one tournament, but no other noteworthy results - and I don't play a lot of press and gunboat, so I'm used to time limited games. What's the worst starting country depends largely on the me...

Re: Twenty Questions Game CXCIII

It doesn't have to be a current profession. For example, for a sportswoman that is now retired and does a different job, but is primarily known for her sportswomanship, would count as primarily known for her profession. The aspect of getting paid for doing something isn't what's crucial to me, if we...

Re: Twenty Questions - Game 182

So we are likely (though not guaranteed to be) in the 1820-1900 death bucket. Perhaps I missed a word (its happened before), but I don't understand this boolean logic. Q4 established that he is born before 1900 Q7, that he was either European-born, or died before 1820 (or both). Q9, that he was bor...

Re: XX Questions – Game CLXXIX

The list is too long, but glossing over the Spanish language history of Argentina wiki (https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historia_de_la_Argentina)

The most appealing person of interest to me is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domingo_Faustino_Sarmiento

For clarity, this is not a guess)

Re: XX Questions – Game CLXXIX

Well, it's narrowed down to presidents of Uruguay and Argentina within a rather small period, none of which strikes me as familiar. Looking at numbers, Carlos Menem and Raúl Alfonsín seem like the most likely to be chosen, where I give more odds to the later based on the first few lines in their res...

Re: XX Questions – Game CLXXIX

So, using wikipedia I noted that Spanish is listed as "de facto official" in both Argentina and Chile, which might've been interpreted as not official by the QM and might've been te question with the surprising answer the QM referred to. If we believe this theory to be plausible, do we want to spend...

Re: XX Questions – Game CLXXIX

I’m not going to guess him because I already used mine and I’ve already missed obvious details. Patrice Lumumba fits all the criteria including that I can’t figure out his height. If someone can figure it out, maybe it’s a good guess.

Re: XX Questions – Game CLXXIX

This game is getting frustrating. A while back a QM told us the subject was in the Politburo during WW2, when in fact he was appointed in 1946. Now the QM tells us he is "living" and we cannot trust that that in fact means he is, you know, living? As the QM from that game I looked back in that thre...

Wow, I checked wikipedia and apparently mentioned the part where he is dead. I’ll stop for now and get back once I get my mind back together.
