I would question the notion that nonconsensual invasion of your territory doesn't count as an attack just because you want to give it a fancy name, but it's true that Italy had weird plans in that game. Yeah, I think the word "bracket" is confusing, usually you hear that in a tournament where people (or teams) play each other one-on-one, and the winner of each pairing advances to the next round.
