No, but it makes it easier. Discord allows for notifications so it's more convenient to get 7 players together.

Refreshing the front page to look for live games still works though.

Eh. As a long time live game player and organizer, there's a few things...
1. A lot of the core members of the live game community left or are less active (Strauss, MichiganMan, The Czech, etc.) than they used to be
2. Live games took a LOT of hits before the RR/CD changes, the community was already on life support
3. The "Advertise your live games here thread" is dead now

We generally organize them on Discord now, FWIW.

Came back too after some time, and what I found is overwhelmingly most games are private :( also, when did WebDip get bots? Are they any good?

I used to jump on this site and gunboat games would fill up in minutes. Several at a time. Last night I tried a few times. No one even tried to join.

OK. I haven't been on this site in years. For a while, I was pretty active here. With the coronavirus in swing, I decided to jump on here and play a gunboat or two. I am really shocked at the total lack of people here. Like...what happened? Is it always this dead? Kind of sad. I used to love this site.
