07 Feb 21 UTC Spring, 2006: GameMaster: Game was extended due to at least 1 member failing to enter orders and having an excused missed turn available. This has un-readied all orders.
09 Feb 21 UTC GG. I could see I wasn't making many inroads in convincing y'all to eliminate another person before drawing. France may have been heading in that direction, but it would've been a slow trudge, and I was holding everyone else up. Well played.
09 Feb 21 UTC Had me worried there for a minute. Too many guessing games on our border. Cheers especially to Germany for consistent cooperation.
09 Feb 21 UTC Gg all. I had an early advantage but got bogged down as Ukraine favored Turkey over me to their own demise, and as I was not able to commit fully to the east due to paranoia about being France’s next target after Spain (was it confirmed or did I turn it into a self fulfilling prophecy... please do tell :) )

My paranoid preparedness helped ward off France until Germany came to the rescue, but by then Turkey had already consolidated the east and it was a purely defensive game.

I got quite lucky with some moves which bought more time than I thought I had, but to me it looked like you just broke through and France was about to pounce. I don’t know why you chose to draw - I was getting ready to do my best to throw the game if France attacked.
09 Feb 21 UTC Answers to couple of questions. I think italy you precipitated it. Autumn 1999 I got 3 builds but you had just moved east the turn before. England and Germany were in a messy fight, I definitely intending to go north but the fleet in Lig was real problem for me. So yeah, a pity that one but it happens.

In contrast I really hadn’t decided to help eliminate italy at the end. I was still flip flopping between helping to defend which would have been hard but I was ready to get exposed to Germany to prevent a solo by Turkey (I signalled to Germany and there was a stalemate line to fall back to and allow me to release another fleet but Germany kept the pressure on me). I was trying to play the waiting game, and then if italy really started failing I would have taken SCs to hold Turkey and hoped italy understood. Was still undecided on approach hence the bland bounce at the last round
09 Feb 21 UTC Kinda glad italy survived tho - for understanding the need for us both to stop fighting and go the other way right at the same time - we had our little tension but back to good allies after that
09 Feb 21 UTC Fleet at Ligurian or the build at Rome before that? You were already in Pie when I made the move to Lig.
09 Feb 21 UTC but yeah, that build should have been an army at Libya, then keep pushing east.
09 Feb 21 UTC regarding helping me towards the end, if the army at Morocco had gone to Western Sahara to support hold Libya, that would have been very welcome :D

More broadly, I don't understand why everyone locked up the game so early. Turkey at 17 units is hardly unstoppable, and there were several stalemate lines before 34. I think I and possibly Poland were both expendable. Or Ger-Fra could have moved off the stalemate and pushed against Turkey.
09 Feb 21 UTC The Russian had an unhappy brief existence. The Polack and the White Russian were nasty.
09 Feb 21 UTC no, it was the dang Ukranian and the White Russian...all the same...nasty characters all of them.
09 Feb 21 UTC Modern Diplomacy is hard. I got my butt kicked. I will stick to classic.
09 Feb 21 UTC I've played Modern twice - once press (forum game run through PMs on a different site) and this game. Drew Ukraine both times. Honestly not sure where Ukrainian builds are supposed to come from. Biggest frustration was not getting any active help from Russia once it was evident Poland was a threat.

Helping Turkey didn't turn out real well but I was sure for a while that Italy was going to just roll through and the game flipped around and caught me off guard.
09 Feb 21 UTC When I drew Russia, I researched other Modern games to see if Russia ever won, and to try to copy what they did. Well, I did find one, but he did well because Turkey didn't move at all, and Russia ate him up. I don't know, maybe that was a dream.
09 Feb 21 UTC but Russia seems a hard country to win in. Oh, and I never win gunboat anywhere anyway.
09 Feb 21 UTC congrats to the winners. You deserve it.
09 Feb 21 UTC Russia is definitely tough in this variant. I believe it's the only power that doesn't have a single guaranteed new build to pick up the first year. It does have the benefit or corner position though, which is huge. My successful attempts at Russia have required cooperation with either Poland or Ukraine against the other early in the game. Once one is weak it out, the other is easy pickings, usually being pressured from the other side by Italy, Turkey or Germany and unable to defend both sides.
