I've just got back home...
... from a higway car crash accident. Which has occured a few hours ago. I was the passenger in a car which has been dislodged on the rail and got back on the road running 50mph through the snow. After that a van hit us from behind. The car is totaly damaged but I've got through with a light brain concussion only. I am a lucky bastard!

I would like a new game.
I don't care bet size or non anon/anon. Full press WTA High quality game. No requirements other then you must have a resign rate 1% or 0%... if yours is higher, explain the resigns in the forum, and we will see if it was your fault or if it was out of your control. Analyzing data from webdip games?
Just wondering if any thought has been given to making all the move data from the history of diplo games available? Seems like every strategy article I read is based on analyzing like 100 postal games. While interesting and still relevant, there's no way to know if strategies have shifted over the years. In any case, the data exists in a much more easily analyzable format. Just wondering if it is out there anywhere?

Have a Birthday Comin' Up
And I know y'all don't care, but I'm wondering if I should care a little more. It just doesn't seem like the 'year' is that important. In the past year, I've tripled my number of college credits, attempted to analyze my own psychology, and completely changed my style of composition with heavy influence from Charles Ives. But I'm starting to evaluate my life in increments of a few months or so.

The barely (un)intended effect of having a birthday coming up:I DEMAND JUSTICE
This is meant to cheer up Jamiet while simultaneously allowing people to post their most random thought of the day. Or as some folks like to do around here, post a random link and ask people to discuss.

So either post some barely funny comments here (save the really funny comments for when Jamie comes out of surgery) or DISCUSS!

NetFLix "House of Cards"
Netflix has a new original series, "House Of Cards", which apparently they created by examine their viewers habits...and then created a show that maximized the likes of viewers, down to the choice of Kevin Spacey. Brilliant...the new age of media?? Thoughts?

An Oppresive Conqueror...
...is taking over your country. You know that certain locals will be installed to manage the people. Tthe Conqueror is wicked, and you would be forced to carry out wicked acts if installed BUT you might be able to do good as well. Do you assist the conqueror, in order to possibly help in the occupation?
Octavious (2701 D)

Octavious (2701 D)

It's an attractive thought, fighting to make the system fairer from within, but when it comes down to it as soon as you start issuing wicked orders and committing wicked acts it does some nasty things to you. There are some things I cannot do and remain me, and it would be foolish to try.

Far better to simply fight in the resistance if you find yourself in a position where you can do so, or try to make yourself invisible and ensure the survival of your family if not.
Draugnar (0 DX)

In the words of Rinzler/Tron "I fight for the Users!" (in other words, no).
Not everyone in the Vishy Government of France, nor every accused "collaborator" was a bad guy, but they all got the chop in the end, some quite literally and many without trial. Nobody wanted to listen to their excuses. So the answer to your question is No.
krellin (80 DX)
19 Feb 13 UTC
The premise is this: When the Conqueror conquer, it is inevitable that:
1. They will pick locals to assist in establishing the local government.
2. Regardless of who is chosen to represent a "friendly, known" face to the public, the Conqueror will set the rules
3. Regardless of who is chosen, no doubt terrible things will happen to local guerillas, etc.

SO...

TWO options:
A. The local Representative can be a true believer/true lapdog of teh conqueror, with *only* self-interest in mind, in which case they will carry out orders without question, and do no good thing for the population

B. The local representative can be sympathetic to "The Cause"...and risk life and limb...and most likely risk extreme torture, perhaps publicly...to feed information supplies, whatever aid and comfort he can to the guerilla population. It is perhaps the bravest stance, the bravest option one could choose...to where the clothes of the wolf and suffer the disdain, and possible murder at the hands of former loved ones...in order to assist them...and possibly suffer a brutal death at the hands of the conqueror.

I'll take my place as local representative of the Conqueror...and risk my life and limb to save you thankless twats! :P

Yes. When the shit hits the fan, the end justifies the means.

You can do more from within.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
19 Feb 13 UTC
There might be cause to collaborate so as to become an agent of the resistance. I would consider that, assuming I'm brave enough.

But depending on the depths of wickedness, that would be the real question. If it was just like, say, Putin, I would probably sign on. Kim Jong Un or some similar death camp operator... no.

Government is always unjustly killing people. I can stomach a certain amount to do some good, but there is a line to be drawn. It would depend if this conquerer crossed it.

Funny, Thucy -- let me ask you this: The Democrat party in the US *loves* to use the phrase, "If we can save *just one* child's life..." and we use this as justification to wage war on the Second Amendment, amongst other things. I'm not certain...but I believe you might fall in to that group (forgive me if you do not...)

So...certainly as an "insider" in the Conqueror's government, you could save just one life with the information, access to food, ability to grease the palms of "don't care" soldiers and guards who just signed up and got shipped to the US for a year to get a college education...surely from within you can save just one life...

How can you not choose the path of hero?
krellin (80 DX)
19 Feb 13 UTC
"Collaborate" -- is also a *false* word to use for the premise. Collaborate means that you are working with someone to achieve the same goal. The premise that I am suggesting is that we are taking the role of local conqueror's bitch in order to work *against* his objectives from within...meaning that, yes, you occasionally sign the order to have local executed....while working to save other...clearly against the objectives of the Conqueror.
Octavious (2701 D)

I tell you you couldn't do it. The idea is sound, by taking actions like that will change you. You lose perspective, then you lose yourself, and then the enemy wins. A bad way to go.

You guys should watch or re-watch Schindler's List. Even the smallest things can make a difference. Nothing wrong with joining the resistance, but if I can sabotage from within and make more of a difference, I'm taking that chance.
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Feb 13 UTC
Schindler wasn't a Jew. He wasn't being conquered but a member ofbthe conquering race. Different set of circumstances entirely. Had, say, Isaac Stern worked with Mon Goeth and assisted in the killing of some of his people so that others might have lived, that would be a valid comparison. But he didn't.
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Feb 13 UTC
Amon Goeth. Typo. Sorry.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
19 Feb 13 UTC
No, it's not a direct comparison, but that's splitting hairs. The point is that you can probably do more from the inside.
Draugnar (0 DX)
19 Feb 13 UTC
No it is not splitting heirs. Schindler found himself in the position amd used it to save lives. I would have done the same. But to put my own people to death (ans face it, to stay in power you have to do bad in a visual manner) to save some of them, I couldn't do. Likewise, Schindler was a captain of industry, not a governor or mayer or other political type figure.

Ah, the old splitting of heirs.

Typo, but a good one. And I love the Biblical reference in your joke about it, Thucy.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

Anyway I think you misread me krellin. I would in general be receptive. However if the job was simply THAT egregious, I would just focus on killing people that are doing it.

It is a question but *true* heroism. Intersting, in anothrr thread recently, msome defined herosim as stumbling ass.backwards into a situation you were too tupid to ge aware of (ie Forest Gump)....NOW we re talking about TRUE hroism...and mot of you back out.

I wish we could join thrads.
