What happens to CD points and docked points?
Say I CD'ed in some games and got docked for some points. Therefore I don't get refilled to 100.
How do I reset the limit to 100?

British Parliament votes
Hey, though I'd just give this a shot, see if anyone would actually have this information? Does anyone know where (preferably on the internet or in an easily obtainable book) I could find the record of votes in the British parliament. I assume it wouldn't be too hard to find the votes of the past few years, but I'm looking for votes from 1801-1899. Any ideas? I'm working on my thesis, and having a little trouble. Thanks

The Hunger Games (And Other Teen Franchises)--Thoughts?
I've said my peace about my disdain for manufactured book series in general, and especially teen ones...and yet, "Ender's Game," a book I've praised, is definitely a series, and if not targeted at teens, certainly aimed at them in large part...so, my question, as The Hunger Games hits theatres, is simply--what do you think of them? HP? Twilight? Hunger Games? Ender? Others? Fair to compare...and do any of them, in your opinion, have "staying power?"

Introducing friends to diplomacy!
I am about to host my second diplomacy party with a group of friends. here's the thing: i've only played online, and none of my friends have played at all, except for my last game. I'd like to tell you what I'm doing and see if you guys have any pointers for teaching diplomacy, and how to host a good live game.

Here's my set up. I have a big open living room/kitchen area with a 32" flat screen at one far end, hooked up to my wii. On a side table is my laptop. On our kitchen table sits a big 24x36 board that i made myself. I enter orders into realpolitik and let that do the adjudication. Then I screencap the resulting image, rename it to a particular filename, and drag it onto my ftp space open in another window. the wii's browser is already pointed at that image, so i hit refresh on the wii, and the game is displayed on the tv screen! then i go update the main table with the results from realpolitik's adjudication. This way, everyone has a couple places where they can look at the map and speak with someone. you can talk at the board, you can talk at the TV. you can pull up the link the realpolitik gameboard screencap on your smart phone and talk somewhere else entirely.

There is also plenty of alcohol.

Last time, we spent about 3 hours and got through 1902, after explaining rules and such. Some of the folks, this'll be their first time, but some have played once already. I don't plan on playing at all. Instead I am usually there to explain rules and offer input, and also to process the moves. This time, I plan to enforce stricter negotiation times, and make sure they are writing their orders down properly, so later, i can segue out of gamemaster mode and start playing, myself.

Any suggestions for running a live game? I am truly making this up as i go along, and I'd like the group's experience on running a diplomacy game.

The Wii idea is nice, but nothing beats having a real board.

That's really cool. Umm, I tried something similar with my friends.
No high tech setup or anything. Just the classic original board with the little wooden blocks and pieces of paper. It didn't work too well because no one wanted to get up and talk. So virtually no negotiation happened at all. It was like playing a gunboat with 6 newbies.
The next time, I got everyone to bring a laptop and we all chatted over MSN, even though we were across the table from each other. It kinda kills the point of F2F diplomacy, but at the very least negotiation happened. = /

You could make your own board pretty easily, if you don't want to buy a hard copy.

I always wondered about the idea of using text messages or something to communicate during a game of dip. For instance, while you talk to say, germany, you can send a text to france.

Also, I like the idea of using an online adjudicator for your game. I wonder if that's any faster than doing adjudication by hand. What are you8r time limits?

Using an adjudicator will make a slow game even slower. I suggest that you adjudicate yourself and do away with the nice touch of displaying the board on the various monitors.

You can probably limit the negotiation phases to 10 minutes, since new players often don't know what to talk about, and allow 2 minutes for writing orders.

Here's a link to a five-minute teaching guide that we use to get people started: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B2afHv8BxLeQMWMyNGU0ZGItZDczOS00MTNiLThkMWQtOGI3NzMzMWZiMjM5/edit. I usually go through the guide; then demonstrate the self-standoff, unwanted support and rapid retreat home; and finally, explain the concept of natural neutrals. That takes no more than 15 minutes. After that, you can turn them loose, especially if you're on hand to answer questions, etc.

You should be able to get through a year in 35 minutes.

Also, if you don't have conference maps, you can get one here: http://www.wizards.com/avalonhill/rules/diplomacy_mappad.pdf.

jdip is also a nice diplomacy adjudicator. I like it quite a bit, but I have not used realpolitik, so I cannot compare the two.

Why not hook the screen directly up to the laptop? You might get better resolution that way, and people can watch as you put in the orders, etc. You can still upload the file to the server, of course, to make it easier for players to access the maps by other means.

For maintaining stricter timing, I would recommend setting up an interval timer. You can find some web-based versions (like this one: http://www.speedbagforum.com/timer.html). There are also some purpose built diplomacy and game timers out there.

@JimTheGrey: using software wouldn't necessarily make the game slower. With new players, it might actually help speed things up since the software would be able to generate maps that show the orders and adjudication results that help explain the rules. Those visual aids can be very helpful when teaching new players.

Reading the orders is faster, unless the players can simultaneously input their orders. We have one player read while someone else pushes the pieces. You stand the block up for support, push it part way into a space to indicate a move, etc. It works pretty well, and you can explain the resolution as you go.

One of our hosts (in our Chicago hobby) likes to input moves into RealPolitik while we're adjudicating by hand. He has networked monitors in three conference rooms, so he refreshes the maps for us. That's pretty cool, but even that occasionally slows us down.

I definitely agree that it may slow down the game for very experienced players, as such players can often run through the orders very quickly while keeping track of what has been read and adjusting the adjudication as more orders are revealed.

However, for newbies, its a completely different situation. They often have trouble just keeping track of what orders have already been read unless there are some obvious visual cues (since the traditional methods of positioning pieces to illustrate orders may seem cryptic to them). Also, the output of such software may help with their understanding of rules (i.e., jdip gives some basic explanations with the adjudications like "support cut by attack", etc) and illustrate which orders failed and which succeeded.

I've taught a lot of new players how to play and have run newbie-only games. The old-fashioned way works just fine. In my experience, the only advantage of using an adjudicator is the ability to display the map on monitors so that players can negotiate while looking at the board. I just don't think that's worth the trade-off of making the game longer. So my advice to BD is to adjudicate by hand. I hope the party goes well.

I think the OP mentioned that the advantage of being able to display the map on a monitor and even giving the players the convenience of seeing it on their smartphones was a motivating factor for using an adjudicator.

I've hosted a lot of face to face games with old friends from high school, and we were all learning back then. I would agree with JimTheGrey that adjudication is something that is pretty easy for everyone to understand as long as everything is said clearly while the adjudication is taking place. One thing that really helped us in the beginning, though, was using the extra maps of the board that are included with the game itself. So I would suggest printing out 7 copies of the map so that everyone has something to write notes on. Just my two cents.

However you choose to adjudicate, BD, I hope you'll share a recap with us.

AFRCAN AMERCANS - Need White Man's Help?
it's been suggested that I am racist because I think an African American can make it on his own in 2012. If you are African American...do you NEED a White Man's HELP to make it in life? Or do you think that you are capable of succeeding on your own, WITHOUT a White man's help?

Who's racist? The one who trusts you for your own strength? Or the liberal whitey who thinks you are too weak on your own to succeed????
