Nixon played a role in overthrowing various leftist governments in South America, such as Salvador Allende in Chile. In Brazil, his term coincided with the coming to power of the hardliners, such as Costa e Silva and Garrastazu Médice.

Seriously! He's the freaking president...why should we care if he has some illegal recordings? Let him do as he pleases...he was elected president because WE thought he would be the best for the job. He should be able to do whatever he wants if he is to lead our nation with the clearest and most direct authority.

Yes, Nixon may have been accused of very bad things...and he may have even done these things, but I believe his merits outweigh his "very demerits." I don't need to defend him though...you can have your opinions about him and I'll have mine.

Not a Nixon fan, but I don't think he was much worse than most other presidents. I think he ticked some powerful people off something awful (starting, I suppose, with the deputy director of the FBI who confessed on his death bed to being "Deep Throat" and was primarily ticked off about getting passed over when Hoover finally croaked). This, I suspect, is why Watergate got so much attention - when most major scandals with other presidents are casually and quietly swept under the rug (and when mentioned are instantly dismissed as nothing more than the ramblings of Conspiracy Kooks).

I'm surprised the goldbugs are so apologetic about Nixon. Then again it depends on what political current is most powerful, the hatred of the fiat currency, or the love of JBS conspiracy mongering.

Yes, I do, I think that forming an organization that was admittedly on the verge of killing a journalist deemed a threat to the administration, planned to create hit squads to mug intillectual opponents, and kidnap citizen protesters and drop them off in mexico without Identification or money is unique to American history.
