How to Get People to do What YOU Want
Diplomats fall into different categories or archetypes. Some are bossy and curmudgeonly. Some are vague and try to stay neutral toward everybody. Some are pushovers (the best allies of course!). And some are true diplomats. There is a lot to say on this topic and I hope to get a lot of participation in this thread, but I'd like to start with a couple pointers that have served me well:

New Gunboat
Hi, I'm feeling bored and up for a quick game of diplomacy. 5 min phase. Here's the link if anyone wants to join: gameID=71448. (sorry if I shouldn't be posting this as a thread).

Luck in diplomacy.
I found a case of luck. In gunboat, you have 2 SCs open, and can move to one, the opponent can as well. You will either get in one or bounce. 50-50 chance of each. Luck is involved.

Out-Guessing Your Opponent
Oftentimes you are presented with difficult tactical decisions. Consider a move where you could take a SC two different ways. Your opponent can defend against either move successfully, but not both. Which move do you choose?

I miss King Atom
Now that he's gone, I kind of miss him. Though his comments were often inane and nonsensical, there was a sort of clarity of thought to them that, in retrospect... I really respect. You might even call it a kind of genius? Come back to us, KA!

Yes yes yes yes! I want! I want! I'm jonesing for a good game. Starcraft was much of a letdown....just a rehash of an old game with updated graphics. <sigh...> But never played diablo much, so even if it's a rehash, it will be new....AND I can get my wife to play, too - which I didn't have when I last played. So...bring on the Diablo!!!

Why aren't you playing LoL while you wait?
spyman (424 D(G))

I haven't tried Starcraft. Not as great as they say hey?
I used to love RTS games. Age of Empires 2 and Rise of Nations are probably my favorite games of all time. I haven't played much RTS for ages and I am looking for a new game. I have Company of Heroes - its good game. What's Age of Empires 3 like? I heard mixed reports. That it is flashy and complicated but lacks the strategic and tactical depth of with AOE2 or Rise of Nations. What do you guys think? What's a great RTS (multiplayer online or LAN is what I like to play).

Now that's not nice, zultar. We're keeping it at the top for you : )

In terms of RTS, I'd recommend Supreme Commander, Sins of a Solar Empire, or Homeworld.

Wait. Really? SCII was a letdown?

SCII is everything a RTS should be. Balanced. Fast. Fun.
spyman (424 D(G))

What other RTS games have you played smiley?
(we are keeping this thread on top Zultar).
krellin (80 DX)
01 Nov 11 UTC
SCII was a letdown because I played the original back in 1998 and the game is essentially UNCHANGED....so yeah....big letdown.

It's a big letdown because Starcraft (the ORIGINAL) was such a *fantastic* game. It set the mark for what an RTS should be and was the game that everyone wanted to emulate, as WoW did for MORPG. The problem is, SCII is simply little more than a visual update with good cutscenes. HUGE letdown. Oh....wait....they added the talent tree (from WoW).

LOL, I might not be playing diplomacy much anymore (my baby girl is turning 1 year old in a week) , but I am still going to stick around this site. I greatly enjoy our various discussions, philosophical, scientific, political, etc, AND our ability to get off track.
krellin (80 DX)

Essentially, the problem is that blizzard has conquered gaming. I've played many different MMORPG's, from WoW, to City of Heroes, Rift, and others...and I can't find anything that beats WoW (as most things are trying to emulate WoW)...but I'm bored to death with WoW.

In the RTS world, it is difficult to imagine what else can be done with the genre. Starcraft set a high bar, and was emulated over and over and over again. What can you do to make it better? Talent tree was interesting, buying tech to personalize your army....but the game play is the same.

Maybe I'm just an old fart who is no longer impressed with updated graphics layed over a decade-old concept...

@krellin

Have you tried those other RTS I recommend to spy? (SupCom, Homeworld, Sins)?

Those are all very different from SC and I like them a lot.
spyman (424 D(G))
01 Nov 11 UTC
abe, how do you personally tend to play those games? Single player or multiplayer?
LAN or online. (I tried AOE and RoN online against strangers and man the competition was tough. Playing against friends was my level, and incredibly fun).
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
01 Nov 11 UTC
I have very little patience for single-player games.

I mostly play games (RTS, FPS, RPG, MMORPG) against/with friends (irl or online).
zultar (4180 DMod(P))

I play RPG and Turn-Based Strategy games for the single-player experience. I have little patience to get with other people. Will play D3 with wife though (trying to get her to agree to play wizard while I roll Barbarian or Monk). On that note...
Anyone let me beta a barbarian? PM me. :)

I started to hate RTS very young... recommend grand strategy like most of Paradox Interactive's games. Requires actual though instead of just "How do I do everything fast."

PI games are good. Also, the Total War series is also good, though I hate how they've made it harder to mod the last few games and the shitty DLC (I don't mind DLC, but I would prefer it to be something of worth, not just reskinned models which can be done by almost anyone).

Sins is good, but you need to get the patches, otherwise the AI has a few problems and it is quite easy to win just spamming fighters/bombers.
fortknox (2059 D)

Christ... Homeworld? I haven't played that game in ages... but the music and everything... what a great game.

I can also approve of the Total War series, but I never surpassed Medieval Total War (1).

However, volunteers from the late "Why so Anonymous?" game are most likely to be given priority (pacta sunt servanda). But I think we will have some free seats.

Should I be suspicious? Multi theoretical question
When a player enter orders not to move during two turns, and then CD, just in time for another player to encircle him and grasp all of his centers, should I be suspicious of multi or that's the kind of thing that happens all the time?

Of course I won't point to any specific game, as I wouldn't want to make cheating accusations in the forum. All I want is your oppinion as wether I should bother the mods should that occurr or it's a common situation.

Was John Pemberton a seer?
Really, could you possibly imagine a better name for a drink than Coca-Cola in regard to marketing potential of China? They say Jules Verne nailed all those means of transport we use today several decades in advance but Pemberton is the real deal here. Coca-Cola. Brilliant.

Id like to question the random country chooser on the site.
I have got austria and italy more than average recently. Makes me wonder if the mods are rigging it so id leave... :P But really, for those of you familiar with the phenomenon, is the generator truly random like sites like random.org or is it pseudorandom? Does anyone know?
